From my research, a few got in early, but later the city was paralyzed and at a complete standstill. They then ordered no more docking and the snow continued for several more days. As I recall, they got some 50 inches in a very short time. I have seen pictures of the snow during that time in Hartford where he was heading. There was a restaurant there then right in the very center of town that had many pictures on their walls of this blizzard.
In my growing up years, I never saw it that bad. It went through the whole coast as far south as Virginia, and most ships were not allowed to land as there were no berths for them. It must have been a real mess.
