Hi,
Maybe this is your ancestor?:
In a manifest dated 15 September 1920, a Frederick Voeglin is listed as arriving from Southampton, England. The ship was the "S.S. Olympic" and it left that port on 8 September 1920. However, this Frederick is listed as being born in the US.
-page 32 of the manifest, line 14:
Voeglin, Frederick; age 36; married; born 24 February 1884 in Paterson, New Jersey; living at 352 Ridgwood Road, South Orange, New Jersey.
Then this out of the 1900 census:
District 186, West Orange Countyy of Essex, New Jersey
-Frederick E. VOEGELIN, age 52, born in December 1847 in Germany, married 10 years, German parents, came to US in 1867, occupation of minister
-Katie, wife, age 53, born in September 1846 in Germany, German parents, birthed 3 children, 2 children living, came to US in 1871
-Walter S., son, age 4, born in July 1895 in New York
-Arthur E., son, age 2, born in July 1897 in New Jersey
-Matilda, daughter, age 17, born in August 1882 in NJ
-Frederick E. Jr, son, age 16, born in February 1884 in NJ
*I am surmising that Katie, the wife, is the second wife of this Frederick VOEGELIN and that Frederick Jr. is the one listed in the manifest at the top of this page.*
In the 1880 census:
Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey
-Voegelin, Frederick E., age 32, born in Germany, minister
-Voegelin, Christine L., age 26, born in Germany, wife
-Voegelin, Charles F. N., age 3, son, born in NJ
-Voegelin, Lydia, age 1, daughter, born in NJ
So, is Frederick VOEGELIN Jr. the father of your father Phillip? I think he is. Have you ordered your father's Social Security information?

-Harold S., son, age 10
On 27 December 1919, Frederick Jr. was issued a passport while he was living in New York City and in that application he lists his father's birthplace as Alsace Lorranie. The following year he went to Europe as noted above.
There is more information online and I'll try to answer any of your questions.
