Names on ships list crossed out

I'm looking at lists of passengers entering UK and there are individual and blocks of names crossed out. Does this mean that they did not make the voyage? Or is there another reason? In particular is a record of Royal Navy stoker and engineeers in 1938, going from Durban South Africa to UK. Does anyone have an answer?
Thanks

Castle Garden lookup

I am having problems opening up the Castle Gardens website. I have tried different methods, but I always end up with not found. Could be my computer, but have no problems on the Ellis Island website.

I was in Butler PA last week and found the naturalization papers for Mike Sullivan. He was born on January 25, 1867 in Monteleon Italy. He emigrated to the United States from Naples Italy on March 19, 1873. He arrived at port of New York City NY on April 19, 1873 on the ship Olympia.

From other research I have seen his first name as Mike, Michael and Michele(tombstone). His last name I have seen as Sullivan, Salvano, Silvano and Salva. He must have just been a child during his emigration.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. In the census for 1910, 1920 and 1930 he lived in Butler County PA, and died in 1934.

Gaute

Passengers records for ships from U.S. to England/Ireland?

I am trying to find out if there is any web sites where I might find a record of the year and ship my g-uncle took to return to Ireland from the United States post-1920. His name was Peter Carroll and he would have sailed from either Philadelphia or NY to either Queenstown or Liverpool (guess). Does anyone know where I might look for such information? Does anyone know if Ancestry-UK has such information, I am member of Ancestry-US and don't want to join UK version because it is very expensive only to find they don't have such records anyway. Thanks.

New passenger lists database on line from US to UK

I have a Maria Dellino arriving in the UK from New York in 1952. Her intended address in the UK is an Air Base Squadron, APC London. Is there any way I can find out more about the destination, people involved and a link back to the US? I am assuming that as she was listed as a housewife that she had married an airman (American) and joined him over here. But as her intended place of permanent residence is the US does that mean they went back again at some point? I'm getting the feeling that these people are not related in any way to my UK Dellinos!!??

Any advice greatly appreciated!!!

Are there really honest to goodness missing manifests?

After working with the Ellis Island DB since day 1 I consider myself fairly proficient with its ins and outs. Yet there is one ancestor I cannot find even though I have tried hundreds of different search scenarios from general to specific. You name it, I have tried it. What is even more puzzling is that I know the time frame that this ancestor arrived and have gone through hundreds of manifests line by line to not avail.
Simple question that nobody seems to have a definitive answer for: are there some manifests that are simply lost, damaged, or are so unreadable that that they have not been posted on the EIDB? (the time frame this missing ancestor is 1900-01)

I have a declaration of intent document of my great grandfather which says he arrived in New York from Hamburg on 20 Dec 1907 on the SS President Grant. I looked on ancestry and this ship did indeed arrive in NY on that date but I searched all 148 pages of the document and could not find my great-grandfather (Ignacy Buczynski). I investigated any name that even remotely could have been his to no avail. Does anyone have any idea of why a person would not be found on a manifest or if there are pages missing, etc?

Looking for my Prussian ancestors

I'm trying to find out info on my Prussian ancestors. I'm trying to not only find out when they immigrated, but hopefuly where they are from in Prussia. I've tried looking at ship records on various sites, but have hit dead ends. I don't have membership on Ancestry, so I can't do a look-up. I sure could use the help. The census' don't say anything that would help. My gg-grandmother', Elizabeth Louisa', death record says nothing. I can't find anything on her siblings either. I'm not sure where they arrived (on US soil) but my ancestors were Theodore SCHMITZ, SCHMIDT and his wife Anna Maria, children, Julia, Mary A. and Elizabeth Louisa. All the family were from Prussia. Theodore was b. abt 1804-1808. Anna Maria was b. abt 1819-1824. Julia was b. abt 1833. Mary A. abt 1840 and Elizabeth Louisa abt 1842-43. The family was in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by 1845 as they are in the 1850 census. The 1850 census uses the spelling of Schmidt, the others (census') are using the English version of Smith. Incase it helps, the 1850 census states that Theodore was a Mason. Any help is appreciated.

Many thanks,
Morgan

Two distant relations Alfred Pick (born 1895) and Walter Carr (born 1894) - second cousins to each other, and both Sharman descendants - emigrated from Witham on the Hill in Lincolnshire to Canada in (we think) May 1913. We got this from the parish magazine of the time. Can anyone tell us what ship they went on?

Alfred's nephew told my brother only this week that Alfred came back to England to enlist in the army fairly early in the First World War. Does anyone know when and on what ship he came back, and whether Walter did the same?

I am having problems locating an Immigration Passenger List. I think the NY Passenger List on this site said that it included up to 1940? Can't remember right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am a descendant of of Johannes J. Braun & Anna Katharina Pfeifer that settled in Victoria (Herzog) Kansas. I have genealogy that lists them as immigrating from Russia to New York, New York on the SS Elbe. Their arrival date was March 16, 1892. Other family members listed for immigrating at the same time are as follows:

Joseph J. Braun and his wife Barbara (Mermis)
Their son Joseph Braun
Their daughter Katharina Braun

Johann was from Bavaria and departing from Gibralter makes no sense to me...

Ellis Island Passenger list for Mihaly Tinyo

According to passenger records my great-grandfather Mihaly Tinyo Sr. (aka Michael Teno) immigrated here before his wife and children in 1902. They are all listed as Hungarian, however their last residences are different, and may be spelled wrong? His last place of residence is listed as ZANNITO and his port was Bremen. The others that came later in 1910 are listed as from OFALHEGY, Hungary and their port was Fiume (Rijeka). I guess I am trying to get a better idea of where they came from because I have always been told I am Czech, but considering they are listed as Hungarian, it is just too broad of a term. Their 'last residences' just aren't helping me. If anyone has information on what those residences might actually be or what area I would appreciate it.

Sailing vessels in 1856

Hi,

I am trying to locate information on my family members that emigrated from Germany, in particular, Crimmitschau, Germany, Kingdom of Saxony. The information sought is the name of the vessel they came over on.

The information I know is the following:

I have the original passport of my great-great-grandmother issued by the Kingdom of Saxony. The passport states that she was accompanied by 5 children, and provides the ages. The passport also states that she left from Bremen was was to leave from Breman (Uncertain of translation of that line). From family lore, I know that they came from Germany to New Orleans, and it was a "sailboat" or apparently a vessel under sail power rather than a steam-driven vessel. Also, the passport was dated April 13, 1856, so I presume the family left Germany not long after April 13, 1856.

I have searched all the ships manifest microfilms that were available at the Louisiana State Archives for vessels arriving, from the period covering 1855 through 1858, but found none of my ancestors on any manifests in the New Orleans passengers lists.

Note that not only did I search the microfilm of the indexes, but I also search each manifest on the microfilms one-by-one in case they were not indexed, but still no luck.

Is there any other source of emigration data that might help me identify the ship they sailed on?

I have also searched New York passenger lists on ancestry to no avail in case the family was mistaken about them having come through New Orleans.

The family traveling were:

Ernestine Lassig (the "a" in Lassig the umlaut "a" with two dots over it). This is how the name is spelled on the passport, and it had the original signature of Ernestine Lassig also spelled that way. Further, I have since identified all but one of the five children listed on the passport by age in the 1860 census living in Redbud, IL, except the oldest child (who would have been 16) in 1860. Nothing is known about this child, and it is believed that he (she?) died sometime between when the passport was written in 1856 and the 1860 census. The children's names would have been, from eldest to youngest:

Unknown, Mary Lassig, Hermann Lassig, Anna Lassig, and Hugo Lassig. Mary, Herman, Anna, and Hugo show up in the 1860 census with mother Ernestine and father John (last name in census was spelled Lesing), with newborn child Bertha born in 1857 in Redbud, IL. Any ships manifest should show Ernestine with the Unknown oldest child, Mary, Hermann, Anna, and Hugo. A possible name for the oldest child might be Gustav Lassig, as we have an anecdote that a Gustav Lessing (Lassig) died in Redbud, IL in a deer hunting accident in 1865 (year is believed to be wrong and may have been 1856, since Gustav never shows up in the 1860 census).

Vessel Insurance

Hi,

Was wondering if someone could provide guidance on the following point:

I had a letter from an elderly relative, a cousin of my father's, describing that my great-great-grandfather had emigrated from Germany around 1855 to the US. The reason given for the emigration was that he "had lost a lot of money and needed a fresh start." Later, I visited the relative, and found the original source for that comment was a letter from another of her cousins that she had saved, and in that THAT letter, I read that my great-great-grandfather had lost a lot of money that he put up to insure a ship (presumably a cargo vessel) and that the ship was lost at sea. I immediately recognized that that sounded a lot like how LLoyd's of London used to insure ships, however, since he lived in Crimmitschau, Germany, Kingdom of Saxony, it may not have been LLoyds of London.

I was wondering if there are any old records of things like insuring ships that might be available in an archive somewhere that could be searched for "insurers" such as my great-great-grandfather. I don't know what sort of info that might provide as far as genealogy is concerned but I am always looking for new sources of information trying to trace back beyond my great-great-grandfather.

Also, I have letters written to my great-great-grandmother (wife of the man above), from a relative of hers in Saxony. Although I can struggle to translate German, these letters are beyond my capability because of the difficulty of determining the German words from the old German script, which has letters that are so similar as to be impossible (at least for me) to identify which German words are written in the letters let alone translating from the German to English. However, I did recognize a few words in one of the letters, in particular, the words "Schiff Hermione" which translates as "ship Hermione." The date of the letter was late spring 1865, so this would be the time period that the "ship Hermione" would have been around. Does anyone on this board have any idea what sort of ship it may have been, and how I might find information on this ship?

Thanks for any clues.

Ship Danube - Le Havre to U.S. 1860

I am looking for information on the ship Danube, captained by D. Golding, that landed in the U.S. on May 23, 1860. A potential match for one of my ancestors (Henry Voeglin) is listed in the Germans to America database. He is said to have embarked at Le Havre. The database does not specify which U.S. port the Danube entered on 5/23/1860. If anyone has a source for this information, I would appreciate hearing from you.

I am looking for help. I found an article in the Fulton County NY local history book that states my grandfather came from Holland. The article on gives his last name Hart and states that he was a Holland merchant who lost everything in the Shipwreck. He located in Tryon County now Montgomery County NY. The shipwreck would have been pre 1780 as he was scalped by Indians in the 1780 Massacre of Caughnawaga.

Any idea on good sources of shipwrecks that made it to the US?

Thanks in advance,

Rachelle

I am trying to locate the record of my great-grandfather and family arriving in NYC in June 1898. I don't believe they had planned on immigrating at the time and would have been traveling first class. Are there separate records I can look at for them? Everything I find is entitled Alien Immigrants and doesn't appear to have cabin and salon. In any case I have spent years looking at every manifest name by name for several months and years around them and none of the names come even close. I read somewhere that in 1898 first class passengers would have been dropped off and not sent to Ellis Island.

Any help would be appreciated.

finding a ship record

I have found two entries for Evan Nokes on Ancestry's Passenger and Immigration Lists Indes 1500s-1900s. The entries seem to indicate he traveled in 1860 and in 1862.
How do I find him on a ship? He lived in Monmouthshire, Wales and most likely departed from Newport, Cardiff or Liverpool.

Thank you for any help.

Ship Leathley Passengers lists Sept. 19, 1753

This is what I have found. It was listed in the "Pennsylvania: The Foreigners Who Took the Oath Of Allegiance", I think that was the name of the book, on page 393. The website The Palatine Project Ship Lists has a several ships dating back to the 1600s, which the Ship Leathley is listed, but not much information. Most ships listed only men age 16 and over, but some ships listed men, women, and children. The Ship Leathley left Hamburg, Germany, then to Cowes, England, then to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Note: The "*" after the name is my notes at the bottom not what was stated in the book. The "**" is the Schlencker's (Slinker's) that are my ancestors. Spelling of names are typed exactly how it is in the book.

The book states:
LIST OF FOREIGNERS IMPORTED IN THE SHIP LEATHLEY, CAPT. JOHN LICKLEY, FROM HAMBURG, LAST FROM COWES.
QUALIFIED SEPT. 19, 1753.

Andreas Foll,
Christoph Amelon,
J. Christoph Bomer,*
Casper Hillebrecht,
Daniel Lange,
Henry Neymeyer,
J. Carsten Thorman,
J.
Ships docking during the blizzard of 1888

Is there any lists that would have information concerning the ships that docked Immediately before and immediately after the blizzard of 1888. Some were kept from docking for some two or three days. Others docked at other ports. I am trying to find immigration records from ships eventually docking from Ireland. There must have been chaos in NY during that time, and I have been unable to find a record for my Grandfather who would have been one of those affected. The blizzard was in March between March 10th and March 15.

Dorothea

looking for ship records John Ryan, Ireland to Illinois

I am looking for information on John Ryan who was born around 1806 in Ireland. He married Jane (unknown last name), born 1813 in County Armagh, Ireland and lived in the town of Goodale, Lake County, Illinois for the 1850 census with their kids, son John Ryan (age 12), daughter Margaret Ryan (age 10), daughter Ann Ryan (age 3), and daughter Mary J. Ryan (age 8 months). Ann and Mary were born in illinois. It is unknown where John and Margaret were born. In 1860 the family included son Edward Ryan (age 7), and daughter Ellen Ryan (age 4) and were living in the town of Cuba, Lake County, IL. But father John was no longer in the family. And he was never seen in any other census'. This means he could have passed somewhere between 1855 and 1860. Or he could have left for the military with the upcoming Civil War. By 1880 the family was living in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois. I would love to find out the date of his death and where he came from in Ireland. Also, if they were in the 1840 census and possibly Jane's maiden name.

GRANDFATHERS SHIP RECORDS

Hello
My grandfather leopold Adolphus Wareham b May 25 1881 in kingston jamiaca not sure how he got to San Juan Puerto Rico there has to be some record.. I have a passager record with him coming from san Juan, Puerto Rico to New york on the ship Brazos in Oct 2 1918 age 38 He worked as a waiter on board. I know he went to Nova Scotia or New Brunswick and he married my grandmother Mary Hilda Jones on July 1 1926 in Nova Scotia. It also said on his marriage paper that he worked on the SS Prince George as a Porter.. and it has him living on a different ship SS it looks like Lites.. I know he ended back in New York for his WW2 Registration Draft card in April 27 1942 on the card it has him working at Commodore Hotel and was living in New York age 60.. So there has to be something about him cross the boarder again. I also got his Petitions for Naturalization and he is 67 dated November 1948.. As you can see he jumps around alot.. If anyone can help me get more ship records.

If anyone can help me I would be so grateful it has taken so long just to get what we have..
Oh ya it as his parent as Jacob Del Monte Wareham Kingston Jamaica wife Martha Bravas..

Thanks again for any help

very frustrated, please help!!

ok...so first of all...i have found alot of information, which only confirmed one thing...i apparently come from a long line of liars!! my great great grandfather Ferdinando DiLorenzo...who went by many incarnations of that name...depending on who was asking i guess...but in 1900 he was in America...and i found three ship manifests for either Ferdinando DiLorenzo, Ferd. Dilorenzo or f. DiLorenzo...and it's quite possible that they were all his!! but he had 8 children that he either brough here...or where born here...and i can't find their records to come here, and i don't know really where they would have been born if born here to get those records. the 1900 census puts them all at Fred's brother, Anthony's house in Genesee Falls in New York...but by 1910 he had made it with his brood to Rochester (where he stayed until his death in 1935)...in 1900 his children were aged 15-less than a year old. and i can't find record of his wife at the time coming over...her name was Carmela Parella (italian tradition - the wife keeps her father's name when married)...however...his second "wife" in Rochester was Madelina or Magdelena or Maud...again, depending on who was asking...went by Fred's last name. and Carmela vanished...except i still can't find record of her being here...but I have no hard evidence that the majority of the kids were born in US. Michael (my great grand father) was born in italy, he was the oldest. then Caterina (Kate or Catherine), next was Anthony, then mary, Julia, Peter, Louis and Joseph. any help would be amazing!! thanks.

May 29, 1910 ship LEAVING NY to Europe ...help?

Hello,
I have a letter from my great grandfather to my great uncle. He said he is leaving NY city to go back home (Poland) on May 29, 1910.
Great Grandfather's name is Michal Mlynarski. They usually butcher the last name, so it's difficult to find in searches.
My question is, Is there a way to search ship records by date, going BACK TO Europe from the US.
I do have an ancestry.com subcription if that helps.
Thanks.

Additional info: I do have Michal's record coming here to the USA staying with son Jakob in Chicago IL. I would just like to see the data he gave on the ship back home to Poland.

Have seen other references to Edinburgh and Edinburgh 2, but cannot retrieve lists. Anyone know a good website? Also, the Rowand landed the day before. Both ships may have listed folks from Daaden, Rheinland Pfaltz. Very interested in complete passenger lists.

Mystery of Tarzan's father

Can anyone give me some idea of what was going on with Peter WEISMULLER, who was the father of Olympic Medalist and Movie Star Johnny WEISMULLER?

He traveled to the US on several occasions. Apparently (according to a Danube Schwabian gen site) he came back to the US for the last time in 1910.

First he appears on the Hamburg Passeneger List along with Elise WEISMULLER, that was his wife's name. Yet on the Passenger list for the Cincinnati she appears as Teresa MUTH (with Elise written in also). The manifest shows they were held for a Special Inquiry and then Deported. Checking the Detained list it shows they were held for several days and then shipped back to Hamburg aboard the Pres Lincoln. The detained list also notes an alias for Elise/Teresa.

Name: Peter Weissmuller
Arrival Date: 25 Jan 1910
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Hamburg
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: German
Ship Name: Cincinnati

Then in Nov on a passennger list for the Pres Cleveland arr Mar 6, 1910, Peter WEISSMILLER appears on a page with no one else on the page, showing Hamburg as his POD, with no date of departure given and a note stating he appeared at Ellis Island for Inspection Oct 31, 1910

Name: Peter Weissmiller
Arrival Date: 6 Mar 1910
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Hamburg
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: German
Ship Name: President Lincoln

Where was he from the time he was Deported aboard the Lincoln and the time he appeared at Ellis Island in Oct on a manifest from the Linclon from Mar? My guess is that this Teresa/Elise was not his wife and the caught her traveling with Peter's wife's papers and could he have done the chivalrous thing and accompanied her back to Europe?

Robert
Could someone please help me with a lookup on the New York Passenger Lists on aol.com?

The castlegarden.org lists my ancestor Ludwig Engel, 29, tailor, arriving at New York on 28 January 1864. With him is his baby August, 10 months, and Caroline Engel. I would love to see what this passenger list has to say. They were German citizens, but probably sailing from England. I can't read the ship name because it is cut off.
Cannot find ship record! Kurland family. Have been looking for months!

I have been looking for a family ship record for months now! I really have no idea what to do...hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. I am searching for the Kurland family:
using family accounts and info from the 1910 census record in Philadelphia, PA:
Israel Kurland, b. 1874
wife Mary (nee Weiss), b. 1875
son Jacob (aka Jack), b. 1896
daughter Ida Ethel (aka Chaika), b. 1898
son Isador (aka Irving), b. 1900
daughter Rebecca (aka Beckie or Reba), b. 1902
daughter Sarah (aka Sybil), b. 1904

All were born in Russia and according to family accounts, possibly came from Ekaterinoslav, now Dniepropetrovsk in the Ukraine...but I am not sure of that and I don't know where this info came from. They are Jewish/Hebrew.

According to the census, Israel arrived in 1904 and the rest came in 1905. Two kids, Katherine and Harry were born in the US so they don't count of course. Since all of the 1905 people were children, is it safe to assume that they probably all came together with their mother, Mary? or at least some of them? I feel like I have searched every possible port with many different spellings of the name (Koorland, Kerlin, Courland, etc etc...). What do I do from here if I can't find it? I feel like I have enough info to find this record!!! Why can't I find it? Kurland is not THAT common of a name. Advice PLEASE!!

Hi,

Would anyone be able to help with locating or finding a transcript of a passenger record for Anthimos Thomaides. To date I have had no luck. The National Archives of Australia, has an index, but the entries are unindexed.

It is believed he arrived in Australia, on the CORSICA, on the 26th January 1952, in Fremantle, Western Australia. The ship departed Limassol, Cyprus on the 13th December 1951.

Anthimos' migrant passenger number or lookup reference number is 514335. If anyone could help, it would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Anthony

Locate (Szafranski)

Hello,

My grandfather came to America in the early 1920's and I am trying to find out more about his family. He came from a large family with anywhere between 12 and 17 brothers and sisters according to relatives but he and his brother Michael are the only ones anyone ever spoke of.

This is the information I have at this time.

Family name Szafranski
Family members that traveled from the Western Ukraine or possibly Rumania were
Dmytro Szafranski - DOB 11/8/1895 in the western Ukraine - age 28 at the time of arrival. (Conflicting birth areas of
Mary Hirmaska-Szafranski (wife of Dmytro) - DOB 6/23/1895 -age 28 at the time of arrival
Josef Szafranski (son) - DOB 08/29/1919 in Braila Rumania, age 4 at time of arrival
Anna Szafranski (daughter) - DOB 1/3/1922 - age 1 at the time of arrival
According to othe records Dmytro's parents were Andrew Szafranski and Sophia Mickalika-Szafranski (DOB: Unknown)

The first real problem I have run into is that I have conflicting information on the boat they crossed over on. According to the Ellis Island website they crossed on September 15th, 1923 on a boat called "France". If I use Ancestry.com they have manifests that say they crossed in on a boat called "Paris" on April 11th, 1928. The passengers are the same four people on each manifest with a five year difference and with Josef being spelled differently. Both parties were going to the very small town in New York which I grew up in so I know both manifests are speaking of the same people.

If anyone have any information or has any idea of where I could look next to try and find Dmytro's brothers and Sisters or even any information on the Szafranski line pre-1923 I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards,

Matthew Rahn
matthew.r.rahn@gmail.com
Mystery manifest notations

Any idea what the notations on manifests above names mean for example on manifest S.S. Regina D'Italia, from Naples, Italy to Philadelphia, PA., above the name "Difilippo Vito age 29" is written "Apr- 3 1934 4417/459 (R.P.) 18"
also on the same manifest page is the name Elisa Del Duca age 19 above the name is "2-571965 210252" and there is a stamp that looks like "Aug 27 1939"
Here is the link to the page:http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=8769&p...

The entire page has what appear to be dates stamped and numbers and initials. The dates are after the date of the manifest. The manifest arrival date is 17 Mar 1921 the dates are 1926, 1928, 1931, 1934 etc...
I've noticed this before but this page has many more of these mystery notations. Thank you.
Laura

What does it mean when the names are crossed out on a ship's manifest? I read that it means they weren't on the ship, but if that is the case, I can't find any other time they sailed over. Please help!!
