looking for Castle Garden info on Dietrich HINSCH

I am looking for information on Dietrich Hinsch(born 1858) and wife Augusta Ahrens Hinsch(born 1848). Dietrich emigrated from Hamburg, Germany in 9/1889. Wife Augusta came several months later, 1/1890, with son John (2 months old). They both came in thru Castle Garden. They lived in Brooklyn. Dietrich was a harness maker. Their son John changed his name to Hensch when he was 21. Any information on Dietrich or Augusta would be greatly appreciated.

How long did people stay at Castle Garden after they got off thier boat? I have a ancestor that came over in 1871 there was a story that her and her future husband met on the boat which I did not find him on the manifest but the next day I found most likely him comming over from a different ship. I wonder if they met there?

Why so few Swedes on Castle Garden.org?

When looking at passenger lists online at Ancestry.com for various years (1869 for one) I am able to find HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of Swedish immigrants coming into New York Port. When I look for them on CastleGardens.org I cannot find them nor do I see the large number of Swedish imigrants that should be there. There seems to way too few Swedes on that site. Can anyone explain why?

Liverpool Passenger Lists at Castle Garden, 1866

It's my understanding that the Castle Garden data base is collected from Passenger Lists. Also, the UK National Archives doesn't have such lists for people traveling from anywhere in England because they say such lists from before the late 1800's have been destroyed. Does that mean, a priori, that my ancestor who traveled from Liverpool to Castle Garden in 1866 will not be in the CG data base? Or am I misinterpreting something?

so . . . i have a relative i'm researching who came over in 1873, so i went to the castlegarden.org & i *think* that i found the person, i'm looking but for the information available is very limited. even more so, in comparision to what you can find on individuals as listed by ellisisland.org.

so my question is what's the deal? did they simply record less information on immigrants during the Castle Garden period or is less available online? did they require mainfests to be filled out & if so is the information similar to what manifest found on ellisisland.org & is there any way to view it in its entirety?

I was able to find a possible 'hit' for my great-grandfather who emigrated in 1882 from Germany by using the on-line Castlegarden.org search tool. (Jacob Sinn b. 1862). The year matches what my grandmother has remember and his age matches. Ancestry.com NY passenger lists only go up to 1891. Are there any online sources for passenger lists for 1892 and beyond? I'd like to be able to research this 'hit' further so I can either confirm that he is or is not my great-grandfather.

Thanks, Janet

CastleGarden.org offers free access to an extraordinary database of information on 10 million immigrants from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Over 73 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period.

Castle Garden, today known as Castle Clinton National Monument, is the major landmark within The Battery, the 23 acre waterfront park at the tip of Manhattan. From 1855 to 1890, the Castle was America's first official immigration center, a pioneering collaboration of New York State and New York City

http://www.castlegarden.org/
Can someone direct me to finding info about Castle Garden? My grandfather came over in 1885 or'86 to, I assume, Castle Garden. Casual surname searches show nothing of him, and so I don't know how to proceed or where to look regarding immigration. His life & family here is clear, but nothing else is.

A few weeks ago while "surfing" I thought I came upon an entry that said a new Castle Garden website was going to be released about July 15? Is this true, and if so what will it contain? Of course, I DIDN"T write the source of this down and now can not re-find it. Purpose: Am trying to locate ship/immigration information on: Peter Asp arrived here in 1860s from Sweden; Ole Engstrom arrived here about 1880s from Sweden; Lena Johnson arrived here 1885 from Norway or Denmark; Edwin(d) Rask arrived here about 1880 from Sweden; Ole Olson arrived here about 1880 from Sweden. Looking for specific date, name of ship, and port of departure. Thanks!

Desire Vanden Berghe b. 1833 in Belgium - I am trying to find some record of the this gfather in the USA. Family lore has 2 possibilities and I want to find the right one.

1] Desire left Belgium 1880 via Antwerp for the USA leaving behind a wife and 8 children who were to follow at some time later. However, Desire was lost at sea when ship sank.

2] He arrived safely in the USA, wrote home several times but then the family lost track of him.

I am hoping someone has access to the Castle Garden records and will confirm his arrival and his destination in the USA so I can proceed with the research.

Chuck Van Den Eeden
Lombard, Illinois

I have a marriage record of my Ggrandfather that states he was born in Castle Garden. The family came to the states from Germany and the 1900 Census has them arriving in 1855 and 1856. I don't know the true date. The date of my Ggrandfather birth is not varified yet. Census records and marriage records don't give dates of, just age and that varies to. Do you have any ideas on how I can go about my reseach and find this family and the birth of my Ggrandfather?
They came to the states in 1855-56 and then I can't find them on any Census records until 1880

Thank you Claudia

I have found where my gg-grandparents, John Way and Charlotte Smith Way with their two children, William Henry Way and Alice Sophia Way, entered New York in April, 1866. They sailed from Liverpool aboard the S. S. City of Manchester. Along with the family was Charlotte's brother, George Smith. I was able to find them on the passenger list only because I knew Alice's birthdate and that descendants of the family had always said she was 1 year old when she came to the States. Luckily I did not have to look through very many microfilm to find them. I would like, however, to find the entrance dates of William Smith, Charlotte's older brother; her mother Sophia Spiller Smith Sutton and her second husband, Samuel Sutton and their child John Thomas Sutton; Henry James Smith, Charlotte's youngest brother, and Leah Smith a grandchild of Sophia's. I know the others were in Memphis TN by 1880.

I would like very much to make contact with anyone looking for these families. I also would hope that sometime in the near future indexing can start on the passengers that arrived through Castle Gardens. They deserve as much attention as those entering through Ellis Island :-)
I know several years are before the time of 1855, but as you know, years may be off a bit. Welte - year of 1854 - came through N.Y. from Baden, Germany. Gose (Gosa) was in 1848 from Prussia, Germany. Esterberg and Svensson came through in 1871 from Sweden. Yes, it will be nice when immigrant names are indexed for Castle Garden for our ancestors who came through before Ellis Island. Thank you.
