John henry lees born 1881 staffordshire, sailed FROM ENGLAND to America through Ellis island not sure when, but he sent for his family who should have sailed on the TITANIC, But the visas were late so they missed the boat, so did John Henry think they perished with the ship and maybe started a new life, does any one recognise this story, or can any one find any information on him i Have membership with ancestry but it dosn't include the world wide search option so i can't look at American census details.
Regards
Carol

John Henry Lees

John henry Lees was born staffordshire England abt 1881.
1904 he married KATE ELLIS, he then sailed to America on his own through Ellis Island, the plan was to send for his family which i think he did because they were supposed to sail on the TITANIC but the visas were late and they missed the boat, so We can only assume that John henry didn't know the visas were late and he assumed they died in the Titanic disaster. So he was not heard of again, i wonder if any one recognises this story did John start a new family?
Regards
Carol

I have been trying to trace my great aunt Nellie Shore born in 1893 in Rochdale Lancashire. I think she emigrated after her fiance was killed in the Great War, and went to relatives in Chicago. I cannot find her on the 1930 census but know she was still alive until the 50's so presume she married. Is there anyway I can find her married name or ss death index by just using her maiden name and exact birthdate ?

Unescorted women required to marry if not met by family members?

I ask because that is one of the major elements in the Italian movie "Nuovomondo" ("The Golden Door") which describes an Italian family's departure from Italy, transport, and arrival on Ellis Island.

A portion of the movie had several elaborate scenes where marriages were 'arranged' on the Island. The scenes were so simple, yet so realisticaly portrayed that I can't believe it was pure fiction.

It showed scenes of men and women in a room where the women were asked if her spouse was there in the room to 'claim her' whereupon the spouse (on the other side of the room) would says yes, a date would then be arranged in the near future for a marriage to be performed on the Island.

The movie indicated some forms which had to have been filled out and described an act where the groom would then ceremonially pass something across the room to his bride-to-be.

I have only seen a handful of inferences on the internet where this obligation seems to have been enforced for spouse-less women (over 16 or so).

Any facts surrounding it?

Thanks

Hi there,
I know that Mary's sister went across on one of the ships and came back to england, then went back again. the ships were the Ceidric and Teutonic. I can't seem to find Mary Moss and William Moss or any children, i am led to believe that they had children. They went across after 1860 as they were born about 1840s. I know that Patterson New Jersey is mentioned and Iowah. Maiden name of Mary was Parkin and she was born in lincolnshire.
Thanks
Marriage and Ellis Island

Hi
My G Aunt May Harrison travelled to the USA to look after her niece. Her sister Jessie passed away, so May went to the USA to care for her child. The story is that she had to marry her sister's husband before she could land. Previously Jessie married the same man John E anderson on landing at Ellis island.
I have found the marriage record for Jessie to John but cannot find the record for May to marry him. Did they have to marry before they were allowed entry into the country, or was there another way they could enter.
I have sailing records for both of the ladies, Jessie arrived in 1916 and May in 1919.
Can anyone advise of where to look now.
Is it because they were inlaws that they may have not had to get married.
cheers
Stops in Travel Path

After years of looking, I finally identified my gpa's travel from Europe to US. He is in the list of emigrants posted in the Hamburg outward passenger lists for the SS Patricia, of Hamburg-America line. It states he left 19 May 1901, traveling to New York with stops in Boulogne and Plymouth. However, I can not find sign of him in the passenger lists for Ellis Island. The Patricia arrived 1 June 1901, according to the Morton Allen ships directory.

In a case where the ship stops in multiple places, do passengers disembark for any reason if their ticket says destination is different? Would he hae been delayed from leaving at Hamburg if he is on the ships list?

Is the any other explanation on why I could not find him in passenger lists on US side?

I know for sure when he was in the US, but his exact arrival data eludes me.

Gpa's name is Stanislaw Katarski, but the transcribed Hamburg list has him as Kotarski, from Zbojna, Russia, now Poland.
Grouch (Groccia) Family arriving from Italy

My great grandfather, Joseph Groccia was son of JAMES and LOUISA (could be Louise). He was born in Italy on March 3, 1897 and died in April of 1985 in Worcester, MA.

He married ROSE BELSITO also born in Italy in about 1907 and died in January of 1980.
I have been told that when Joseph’s family arrived in the United States they changed their name from GROUCH (? Spelling) to GROCCIA. There were also two other brothers in the family, one named Salvador, and the other named Jerald. I have been told that Jerald became sick on the boat and was left in Argentina.

I know the family arrived at Ellis Island but I am interested in the date of immigration and what part of Italy they came from. If anyone knows more information on James and Louisa it would also be appreciated.

-Jessica
Researching: Groccia (Grouch), Belsito, Quiry, and Bove
I have a copy of the ship manifests for Annesley Megraw who arrived at Ellis Island in 1928 (Celtic) and 1930 (Cameronia). These came from Ancestry.com (New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957). Unfortunately, after my subscription lapsed, I realized that there are 2 pages per record. As a result, I'm missing the second page for each of the 2 manifests (Celtic and Cameronia). Could some kind soul help me out?

Thanks

In reading the original manifest under column 12, "Name and address of nearest relative in country whence alien came" the entry reads as follows "S. Fenenbaum, ul Staro Zakonna, Father; Lwow."

The individual who travelled was a Sara Fenenbaum.

My question is "What is the meaning of ul Staro Zakonna"?

Stowaway?

I never knew my grandfather, Edward Zeman, but according to family lore, that wasn't his real name. They say he lost his papers and took the identity of somebody on the ship who died. I found an Edward Zeman who died aboard the ship Aachen, arriving at Ellis Island on 6/4/1896, which would be within the right time frame. He was only five years old. This must be the identity he took, though, because when I look at census records, he reported being born in 1891. How could he have done this? Wasn't the ship's manifest made up before the ship set sail? The only thing I could think of was that he was a stowaway. Any other ideas?

Thomas Blyth arrived in NYC in Nov 1901 on the SS Majestic coming from Belturbet, Co Cavan, Ireland, via Liverpool. He returned to Ireland in 1904. Would he have had to go through Ellis Island again? If not, what were the other ports of departure in NYC, and how would I find out which ship he sailed on? Many thanks.

Name crossed off manifest?? Antonino Giambrone from Sciara, Sicily 1931

I came across something this morning, and wondered about it. Antonino Giambrone (who might have been a twin of my great-grandmother, Nicasia Giambrone Serio) sailed to the US from Naples first in either March or May 1928. Then I found another manifest from 1931, and I think it's the same Antonino Giambrone but I'm unsure....anyway, his name was crossed off the list. On the bottom of the page, it gives the name of certain people, his being one, saying DID NOT SAIL. Do I have any way of knowing why he didn't board that ship....or if he ever came back to the US? The latter ship sailed from Naples, and it was in June of 1931. By the way, Antonino was born around 1873 and was from Sciara, Sicily according to both manifests. Thanks ahead of time.

Carole

Restrictions on illegitimate children in 1901?

I found an emigration record from Sweden and an Ellis Island record showing my great-grandmother, a single mother, not noting that her daughter traveling on the same ship was her daughter. My grandmother was listed as the foster daughter of an older man also on that ship and had his last name as hers instead of her real last name.

My question is why did they do this? Was there some prohibition against a single mother with a child? All the parish records I could find showed my grandmother living with her mother, so it's not that she had some one else take care of her. I don't know if this man was some relation to them since no one in the family has heard of him. I don't think he was the biological father since he was about 35 years older than my great-grandmother and they never lived together in the U.S. that I can find out.

I can only conclude that there was some legal or other reason they had to use this subterfuge. Does anyone have any information on possible reasons for this?

Thanks,

Barbara McDonald

Trying to find ANY information on my grandpa's family. Im SPECIFICALLY looking for who came together on the ship, the ships name, and what specific town in Lithouania they came from... we cant find any answers....The records show they immigrated to the USA in 1892.
Their names were (Mother) ANNA Siegel, sons: John, Samuel, Louis, Joe, Michael and daughter Nelli. One of the records of the sons show they came from Vilkomir, Ltihuania (Ukmerge). Another says
from " Wolpa" (something)
Annas Hebrew name was Chana Rivka Bat R. Tzvi Siegel . Her J.S.Siegelmother and father were Harris Mark and Syrel Karon. Some of the childrens Hebrew names were
Leib ben R. Tzvi, Me'ir - son of Zvi, Yehoshua-son of Zvi Halevy. Their fathers name was Hinshe Cvi Siegel.
Emigrated to Ellis Island then?????

I would appreciate some help with this...my grandparents emigrated to America via Ellis Island around 1919 (I have seen their names on a ship's manifest) but have no idea where they went after arriving on Ellis Island. They returned to the UK in 1924 so obviously not a long visit!! How would I discover the route they would have taken from Ellis Island, would there have been records kept regarding their intended destination in America perhaps??

First & Second Class Passengers

I have been searching for my great grandparents arrival records for years. My great grandfather, Steve (Stojan) DEMICH (DEMIC), arrived in 1913. I have the Petition for Naturalization, Declaration of Intent, Certificate of Naturalization and his Certificate of Arrival (Issued by the US Dept of Labor). The documentation states that he arrived in the port of New York on June 4, 1913 aboard the SS Cleveland. His Declaration of Intent states that my great grandmother, Mary (Marica) HRAPEL, arrived in New York in 1920.
I have contacted the US Citizenship and Naturalization Office regarding the Certificate of Arrival. The Certificate of Registry provided no further information -though most do.
If he travelled as a First or Second Class passenger, he would not have been processed Ellis Island. He would have been processed aboard the ship. Are those records housed seperately from the ones kept for Steerage Passengers? I have read that stow-aways were also processed aboard ship and not necessarily deported. Is this true?
My great grandmother passed away in 1934. I know very little about her. As with most women of the time, the paper trail is limited. Her arrival record would be invaluable to me.
I am open to all suggestions. Thank you for your valuable time and consideration.
Andrea

My g.g.grandfather may have been born at sea. At least his son in a 1910 census reported that his father was "Born At Sea" His name was Isaiah Mcdowell and possibly born abt 1795. I am looking for his birth and parents.

How do you search for some one born at sea? Do you put the birth place as the country of orgin, the United States or does the ship they are on determine the birth place.

I could not find his birth in Pennsylvania and think this may be the reason.

Thanks Steve

Apparently the microfilm for Mary and Thomas McClelland arriving at Ellis Island September 22, 1911 is not available. I've checked Steve Morse's site and no help there. Short of going to Salt Lake and seeing if they have it....anyone w/ any ideas. I'm interested in who they are going to see and who they left as next of kin in IRELAND...I think these people are relatives but it's hard to tell w/out that info!

A ship manifest for the arrival of Johann BRUKER has me stumped and that is in Column 16, "By whom was passage paid" the letters P.P.B. are followed by the numbers 63896. Typically that column will indicate the immigrant themselves or a relative paid. But I have no idea what this notation means! And the Manifest Markings web page has no mention of this.

Here is a link to the manifest page

http://ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?pID=100146150...

Any help would be appreciated.

Robert Jerin
Immigration rules & regs, 1898-1927

Were immigrants allowed to bypass Ellis Island if a relative met them on arrival?

My grandmother came to New York City from Ireland in 1898 or 1899. She came to stay with her aunt who lived in Brooklyn. She probably did not travel first- or second-class. But I have not found her in the records at EllisIsland.org.

My uncle came to New York City from Liverpool in 1927. As he remembers it, his uncle who lived in the U.S. was supposed to meet him. But for some reason, his uncle did not appear at the appointed place & time. So he had to go to Ellis Island to be cleared for immigration.

Was there some kind of rule, in 1927 and/or 1898, saying that you didn't have to go through Ellis Island if you were being met by a relative? The web site at EllisIsland.org mentions an exception for first- and second-class passengers, but not for passengers being met by relatives.

I'm wondering if my grandmother is missing from the Ellis Island records because her aunt met her. Thanks for any help on this.

Mike Carroll
Oro Valley, AZ

I found an entry on the Ellis Island web site for Consetta Colantoni who arrived in New York on Sep 10, 1909. The entry has a line drawn through it. I also found an entry of Concetta Colantoni arriving in New York on Oct 9, 1909.

Both of these persons are 24, have the same father and are going to marry the same person at the same address. They appear pretty much to be the same person.

I was curious if the line through the first entry meant that entry was denied so she just had time to return to Palermo and catch the next ship back to the U.S. She apparently was admitted the second time.

I was looking for my great grandfather Giovanni Cauda came on a ship "La Champagne" on Oct 28, 1902 from Italy on the Ellis Island Database. There was no image available on the manifest. So I began to use Stephen Morse's One Step. I entered the information in it and hoped to see the manifest appears. Somehow, it got an error message said that file was not found or can not open the file. What does that mean? How can I view the manifest to see if that right person of my great grandfather?

Please advise...
Thanks.
Michele

Can anyone help me find more information on the surname SPARS. Alexander was a fireman on many ships going to and fro to Ellis Island in June 1917 he was detained as shown on the Alien Crew List. His was listed as Russian although I believe he was Latvian. It also stated that he "Ostensibly deserted" It also says he was staying a W 116 St NYC, was this a place where crew were usually detained? He was on the ship Manhattan. Any help would be gratefully recieved. Thank you

For the ship La Gascogne, arriving Oct 29-31, 1902, the one-
step search result indicates "inaccessible". I searched the
rolls before and after without success. Does this mean that the passenger list is in fact lost? Am I out of luck?
Series T715, roll 306, Vol 528.

I was wondering if any records were kept as to what possessions immigrants had with them when they came to the US. I'm specifically looking for any information regarding musical instruments and their origins in the US, or which nationalities tended to bring which instruments over with them. Thanks!

Quarantine Station Hoffman Island 1930 Census

I found a possible relative listed at the Quarantine Station on Hoffman Island (Richmond County) in the 1930 Census. However, everyone is listed as an "inmate." Does anyone know if this was common to list someone as an inmate, rather than a "patient"? I know the other quarantine station (on Swinton Island, or something like that) the individuals were listed as patients. Did Hoffman Island also double as a prison? Any more detailed records that people know about? Thanks.

Locate and change page number in URL:
{Will be same number as listed on page of Original Manifest advanced page, that you copied URL from}

#4. Copy changed URL into address and Enter.
{abt 30 pages per ship worked for me}

Results I received were at page 0882
Ship: was SS Norge
Date: June 8 1894
Correct results were:
Page # 0018 SS Norge  June 8 1894 {First page of Manifest of SS Norge}
Line 118 page 0023 = correct Original Manifest image.

Example: Url was word wrapped when I worked on it to see the line I wanted easier.
I changed the middle part of URL that has page number 0023 then%2ETIF, Not change the last group of numbers including %2ETIF.

K%3A%5CM237%2D0628%5CM237%2D06280023%2ETIF&origFN=K%3A%5CM237%2D0628%5CM237%2D06280882%2ETIF
page# 0023 correct manifest page - line 118

Hope this helps other researchers.
Kate
Can someone check ship records? I have searched Ellis Island Org. to no avail (nearly 3 years of searching). Looking for Joseph Georges Macsas, wife - Lamia Macsas and son: James Macsas. Lamia's alien registration form states ship of travel as the Madonna to New York, NY Aug 1905. Lamia was born May 11, 1886 / Joseph was born May 15, 1878 / son James was born Apr 26, 1905. All three were born in Syria. Lamia's parents: John & Katherine Jerdy/Jurdy could have been on the same ship.

DYCHE family

I'm searching for more information on my great uncle John Thomas DYCHE. He immigrated to the US from Staffordshire, England in 1921. He departed from Liverpool on board the "Baltic" & arrived at Ellis Island. He was married at the time, although I haven't yet found record of his wife immigrating. His parents were John DYCHE & Mary Ann DAY, he had three brothers Joseph, William Herbert & Harold as well as three sisters Daisy, Lilah & Lucy. William Herbert DYCHE was my great grandfather & he immigrated to Australia in the 1950's. The correspondence & information I have say that he lived in Buffalo, NY - I also have two photo's of a little boy called David Malcolm DYCHE dated 1940 & 1948. Can anyone help?

My grandmother was born in the U.S. (Lakewood, OH) in 1916. I found her and her parents listed on Ellis Island records as arriving 11/3/1922! My Great-Grandmother's "Declaration of Intention" paperwork also lists 11/3/1922 as her date of arrival to the U.S. Would my grandmother have been born during a "visit" to the U.S.? Would they have come into a different port, went to Europe to visit family and when coming back decided to become citizens? The dates make no sense and I am hoping that someone out there has a theory for me? Thanks!

I have 2 possibile matches for Anna Sas arriving in 1896.
One is Anna Saas arriving on the Carthaginian January 25, 1896 from Glasgow when I click on view original ships manifest however I get the manifest for a ship called La Gascogne.
My other possible match is Anna Sas arriving May 18 1896 aboard the Amsterdam, once again I click on view original manifest and I get the manifest for a different ship, the Phoenician.
I have used ellisisland.org numerous times and never had this happen before. Anyone have any ideas for me?
incorrect person listed on manifest

Is it possible that the name of a person found on the Ellis Island manifest is not really that person but someone else? Could an incorrect name have been entered for an individual? Wasn't a passport needed to leave Europe to come to the US? Wouldn't the officials have checked the name on the passport before entering a name on the manifest?
Thanks
