My great aunt Mary Gill, born 1857 at Shorncliff Army camp, Kent, England emigrated to New York after the 3 April 1881 English census. She was a school teacher. Her first child Edith Simms (or Simmons) was born Jan 1885 at New York according to the 1900 census. Mary's husband was John Simmons or Simms. The family settled in New York/New Jersey.
Mary's brother Henry Gill was born in 1859 at Kingston, Jamacia, West Indies - when his father a soldier was posted there. The family returned to live in Derby, England in 1861. However, some time after 1882 and before January 1889, Henry Gill emigrated to Queesland, Australia, via New York and Central America (he was a carpenter who worked on the Panama Canal for a while).
I would be very interested if anyone knows any details of their arrivals in New York.
