Hi, thank you very much for your reply.

I am 98% certain that the couple in America are the one's I'm searching for.

You mention a previous marriage. I've not come across this information before. Is there any further information you are able to provide me with so I could investigate please?

I cannot confirm when/where John and Ann married, as I've bene unsuccessful in finding information about it.

Regarding Alfred's birth certificate, I can confirm that we have a copy, and that his mother is Ann Griffiths, his father John Peel. I also can confirm that the birth date posted origianlly is correct for him, both from his birth certificate, and from his death certificate/grave marker.

As I have said, I know his siblings are Samuel, Mary, Richard and Ann. Alfred's son was named after his older brother Samuel too.

Also, where did you find information regarding the older siblings and russian performances? Sorry if I sound rude, I'm just highly curious as this remains a mystery!

All the best,
Joy

Hi,

The PEEL family you are connected to have many variations of their surname on various documents. PEEL/ PEELE/ PEAL.

John PEAL and his wife Ann arrived in New York 19th May 1870
With their own children. and some of his children from a previous marriage.

Are you confident that John PEEL and Ann GRIFFITHS who married at St Chad’s in Shrewsbury are your couple.?
I ask because a John PEEL and wife Ann are living in Shropshire with some GRIFFITHS family members in 1871.
The other PEAL ( PEEL ) family, John and Ann were in Marion, Indianapolis during 1870/71.
This is where their daughter Mary Louisa PEEL/ PEAL and son Richard PEEL / PEAL was born.
By obtaining a birth certificate for one of their children should reveal Ann’s maiden name.

1881 Census , Birmingham, Warwickshire UK , Ann has another child, Alfred born c1877 .
Ann states she is married, rather than widowed, no sign of her husband John Peel on 1881 Census returns.
Did he return with her, or remain in USA with some of his older children from a previous marriage(s) ?

Do you have Alfred PEEL /PEELE /PEALs birth certificate?
This should state his mother maiden name and then you will know if you have the correct marriage.

There are two births registered for Alfred PEEL in Birmingham.
Both indexed in September Quarter 1876.
Alfred Edward PEEL: Ref: 6d-152
Alfred Leo PEEL: Ref: 6d-223
Possible one of these Alfred is yours.

John’s occupation is entered as Plasterer on 1870 Census return in Marion, Indianapolis.
The family most likely went to USA for work.
Daughter Ann who returned to U.K was a performer /Actress 1881 Census U.K
Apparently older siblings were treading the boards also and is rumoured they performed in Russia.

Look forward to your reply.

I believe either one of the brothers, probably John (b 1898) or William (b 1908) emigrated to the US. 1911 they were living in Bermondsey, London. Father Roger Carroll, mother Mary. There was a third brother Roger (b 1900). It might have been him but he married Elizabeth Coakley in Bermondsey 1922. Any info much appreciated.

Re: Will do Lookups in book: Eng. Immigrants to USA pre 1750 - John PICKETT

I know he came to the colonies (Salem Mass) in 1648. His name appears in several books. He had 4 kids he had baptized in 1648 in Salem Mass. I see a number of people have listed his wife as Margaret Metcalf on their trees. All I've found so far is a reference to a Margaret, no last name. He had 3 more kids here, the first being in 1650 so he must have had a wife. I'm wondering if she came with him, or if she died and he remarried here.
Any chance he might be in that book?? His name could be spelled Pickett- Picket or Pigkett. His name was not Pickard. John Pickard was already here and in Rowley before 1648.
Thanks
Sharon

I'm researching a Bransby family that lived in Philadelphia at least as early as 1820. The name, I think, is English. So m asking if anyone has info or books on immigrants into Pennsylvania in the 1700's. I believe that's when they came over. Needing any and all Bransbys mentioned or listed with immigration dates and ships. Any help will be wonderful and greatly appreciated.
This is my first time with the record system of England.
Finding the correct William Cheney is key to this branch of ancestor tree.

The year of immigration should be 1846.

The most I know so far is:

United States Census 1850 New Hartford, Oneida County, New York
household
William Cheney M age-27 b-England
Ruth Cheney F age-32 b-England
Ann Cheney F age-4 b-England
George Cheney M age-3 b-New York
Mary Cheney F age-0 b-New York
Lydia Adams F age-72 b-England

familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MCB2-LMF

The immigration record should include William, Ruth, Ann, and Lydia.
I will appreciate any record of immigration, birth, household.
Also the parents of William Cheney if it is no trouble and have the time to look.

Thank you for your time and effort of research.
PEEL, To America from England roughly 1870-ish

Hi,

I'm really sorry to ask but this has had me stumped for a few months. I'm trying to trace my family, and have basically hit a plateau. All because of this one particular branch. Basically, I'm trying to find the below people.

John Peel (Husband), Ann Peel (Nee Griffiths, wife, born c.1835), Samuel Peel (Son, Born c. 1865 in Shrewsbury) and Ann Peel (Born c.1867 in Shrewsbury)

Between the birth of Mary and their next child, the family headed to America. I know this because the following two children were born there.

Mary Peel (Born c.1873 "America) and Richard Peel (Born c.1876 "America")

Then, Following that, I know that Ann and the children listed above at least came back because of my Great-great-great grandfathers birth in Birmingham, England.

Alfred Peel (Born 28 May 1876)

I'm trying to find where they went in America, when they went to America, why they went (If at all possible), and then their return trip.

Any help would be wonderful!

Many thanks,
Joy

j.pop.a.rock(AT)googlemail(DOT)com

Legend might be partially correct. I find a family named Doldin, as spelled on the manifest, which arrived in NY on 22 Aug 1857, on the Margaret Evans, they included Mark, Ann, Martha, Sarah, John, and Elizabeth. Don

I'm trying to find my Great-Grandfather's ship on which he sailed to the USA. I have him on the 1871 census in Kent
and then his supposed marriage in Buffalo NY in 1872 - a marriage notice - no number on it which makes me wonder if it is legal or if they simply ran to the USA and never married.
There was a child born in 1872 but again I cannot find a birth certificate nor a baptism for her. My Great-Grandfather is then in Bermuda and he married my Great-Grandmother.....Mary O. S. Gibson in 1877 stating him to be a widower at the time of marriage.

Henry John WILSON b.1849 in Portsea, Hampshire, England the son of William Wilson and Patience Louisa (Hill)
I have him on the 1871 census and signing the marriage certificate of his sister the same year along with his bride to be Susanna Jane Jefferies.
Then the certificate stating their marriage in June 1872 and the birth of their daughter Edith Louise Wilson born in Buffalo, NY in 1873.

WHERE DO I LOOK OTHER THAN ON ELLIS ISLAND TO FIND THEIR ENTRY INTO THE USA OR THEIR DEPARTURE FROM THE UK?
ANY HELP WOULD BE TERRIFIC.
Sincerely, Judy in Bermuda

Anita,

If you are still doing lookups, would you see if you have any records for a Samuel Webb or possibly a Bankes Webb. Husband's family came over prior to 1750, possibly as early as 1620 as he has dates recorded in US in 1680's.
Samuel and Bankes, and Elisha are commonly recurring first names in early records. Would expect to find shipping to Virginia/Maryland area as earliest records are from that area, and the family did not migrate west but are in the Harpers Ferry area.

Thanks very much for offering to share your expertise,
Linda Webb

Eliza CHADWICK, British Subject Born in US

Hi there - I am super frustrated and hope someone might be able to help. I know that Eliza Chadwick was born in the US before returning to the UK with her family after her mother died in childbirth (whether with her or not is an open question). I simply cannot find a record of her. Her mother was Mary Jackson and father was Edward Chadwick. We think that Mary died in Rhode Island. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

There is no Oldhave in Lancashire. I suspect your family was from Oldham. Can't help you with the US records, but someone on the Lancashire board or mailing list (LancsGen - see http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/ENG/LANCSGEN.h...) will definitely be able to point you in the right direction for Lancashire records.

Good luck!

Thanks for your response! My mother found some more information overnight from family records - apparently Eliza was born in Providence, Rhode Island ()British Subject) on September 3, 1872. Her father was Edward Chadwick and mother Mark (maiden name Jackson). The were from Oldhave, Lancashire, England and returned sometime after Eliza was born and before 1877. Mary died in childbirth, although we are not sure when - someone a long time ago thought they found a record of her in Rhode Island, being buried in 1874. Any assistance tracing these records would be very greatly appreciated by this novice.

Hayley,
According to another public Family Tree on Ancestry, Ralph was using the name KIRSOP about the time he married Jessie Evelyn Everett. This will be why you could never find any trace of him.

He was born 4th Nov 1877 at Gateshead, Yorkshire, but wasn't christened until 4 Mar 1891 at Linthorpe, Yorkshire.
His parents were William Kirsop and Mary Ann.

On the 1881 census Ralph is at 8 Lambton Terrace, Durham...as follows...
William Kirsop, aged 51. B 1830 Swalwell, Durham.
He is an Anchor Smith.
Mary A Kirsop, aged 36, born 1845 Leeds, Yorkshire.
Catherine Kirsop, aged 10, born 1871 Gateshead, Durham
Ralph Kirsop, aged 2, born 1879 Gateshead, Durham

On the 1891 census, Ralph Kirsop is at Linthorpe - Middlesborough Union Workhouse. He is an Orphan Inmate, aged 13, born Gateshead, Yorkshire.

Brian

hi just read this post and found it interesting as my great grandfather William Gladstone Brocklehurst travelled from liverpool to Phillidelphia (destination central falls, Rhode Island), my great-grandmother Sarah Alice Marsden then met up with him months later from liverpool to boston and married the day she arrived at the docks on s.s Franconia (6th june 1912), they had 2 children in the states, 1 sadly died just 3months old and the other was my grandmother Irene Brocklehurst (born 1913). My great grandmother and my nan travelled back to the Lancashire, UK in 1915 without my grandfather, he continued to travel back and forth ALONE to the states and to Canada between 1912-1932 (maybe more if i find more records)
I am trying to find out why he kept going back alone, leaves me wondering if he had another family out there as my nan was 1 in 13 children!

Have you had any luck in finding out why your family travelled there and where could i go to find out more?

Many thanks for the offer to help. You were spot on. After lots more searching I have found they made not one, but two earlier exploratory trips to the US before finally emigrating for the husband, the Rev Thomas Cresey (or Creasey or Cressy),
to become a minister in the United and/or Methodist church in Vermont (I think).
Your interest is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Tony

If you're sure they are in the 1910 census, then there really isn't any alternative answer other than that they entered the US twice, even if it sounds unlikely. I'd try again to find a 1909 passenger list entry. If you want to post the family names and and where they were in 1910, maybe we can help.

When you have documents that conflict in this way, one has to be wrong. Assess which one is likely more accurate. The 1907 immigration record documents them on a ship. While there may be some extraordinary reason why this record is wrong, for your purposes, it's safe to say they were on the ship. The 1920 census is subject to all sorts of possible errors. The enumerator, the person giving the information to the enumerator. All censuses should be used as good clues, not hard and fast facts. They are tertiary sources, at best, for immigration and naturalization information. I've found many errors for that information in censuses. And - the 1910 census agrees with the 1907 date, further questioning the 1920 census. If the person you referred to was naturalized between 1907 and 1920, there should be a record of it. Maybe you've looked already. In the NE US, petitions and/or declarations of intent for naturalization in this period have the immigration information on them. This is the document that would likely answer your question, but remember to cast your net as wide as possible when you come across these conflicts. Good luck! (1903 to 1907 is four years, by the way).

Thank you for responding to my question.
Unfortunately I don't know when they actually went to the USA. All I know is that my Grandmother told the family that she had relatives who lived in Kinsley Kansas in the 1880s. I have traced the family name (Key) and managed to locate two gravestones in Kinsley Kansas but can find no trace of other family members and I know there were a couple of children (at least) that accompanied them.
Regards

I have ancestors who emigrated to the USA in the 1880s. I think I've located the deaths of two who went to the USA but I can't trace their children who accompanied them.
How do I determine exactly when and where they went to the USA?
Thanks

New York Shipping lists for William MELLING born 1881 in Liverpool, please?

Hi, I am hoping that someone would be kind enough to help me. I have an ancestry account, but in the UK and I can't afford to pay for worldwide membership at the moment...

I have done a search for William Melling, my great grandfather who disappeared around 1915. He is a big mystery - no one knows what happened to him. He had links with New York (his father worked on the sewers out there) and was a builder / sanitary engineer.

He was born in June 1881 in Liverpool, and by doing a search I have thrown up 5 results for New York Shipping lists for William Melling born between 1880 and 1882. I just can't access them!

If anyone would be kind enough to have a look for me I would be incredibly grateful. I would happily return the favour if there is anyone that needed UK records I can access.

Thanks

Beccy

Siblings Mary GILL b1857 & Henry GILL b1859 arrived NY ca 1883

My great aunt Mary Gill, born 1857 at Shorncliff Army camp, Kent, England emigrated to New York after the 3 April 1881 English census. She was a school teacher. Her first child Edith Simms (or Simmons) was born Jan 1885 at New York according to the 1900 census. Mary's husband was John Simmons or Simms. The family settled in New York/New Jersey.

Mary's brother Henry Gill was born in 1859 at Kingston, Jamacia, West Indies - when his father a soldier was posted there. The family returned to live in Derby, England in 1861. However, some time after 1882 and before January 1889, Henry Gill emigrated to Queesland, Australia, via New York and Central America (he was a carpenter who worked on the Panama Canal for a while).

I would be very interested if anyone knows any details of their arrivals in New York.

Thanks, Jean
