Try to find some information about my great grand aunts Maria (1 Jan 1886) and Eva or Eeva (16 Dec 1890) Räsänen from Kaavi Finland. Maybe they wrote there surname without dots (Rasanen).

I know for sure that they arrived to Ellis Island 23 Jun 1912 (saw the document). I also know that Maria had worked in Ashtabula Ohio years 1907-1911.

My mother told that Maria and Eva had sent a parcel to their sister Ida to Siikajärvi, Nilsiä in 1952. It was lack of everything and my mother (1938)still remembers a Sami dress and a few dollars for handkerchiefs she'd got.

Either of Maria or Eva had got married and had got children. Some of the children had sent some letters to their aunt Hilja Puustinen in Kuopio. At that time English was not so widely used in the countryside.

I don't know why Ancestry.com doesn't accept my credit card. I guess it would be easier to find some information.

Interested in any information! I can share my Family Tree here in the web site (not completed yet).
Thanks for your help. I have also seen that but I was not sure because there is no mention of my great grandmother, Sophia. I always thought that they came together. I have searched for her but no luck. Her maiden name was Mackey possibly spelled Maki. My dad always said they came in through Fairport Harbor, but now I am unsure.

Bonnie Best

Hi,

Your post didn't indicate what was the birth date of your Great Grandfather. Hopefully it was on the WWI Draft Registration you found (or was it WWII?). Where did they settle after first arriving? What are the possible years that they did arrive?

I found on a manifest that this person's destination was Athens, Ohio:

Name: Ivar Paananen
Arrival Date: 9 Sep 1905
Birth Year: abt 1884
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race-
/Nationality: Finnish
Port of Departure: Southampton
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: St Louis

I'm not saying that is your G-Grandfather. I found it by just working with the surname. And, the surname may not even be correct.

Here are some resources for your search:

Finnish Heritage Museum of Fairport Harbor
http://finnishheritagemuseum.org/

Emigration from Finland
http://sydaby.eget.net/swe/emi_ref.htm

Ellis Island
http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html

Does anyone have family they are searching for that came from Kivijarvi Finland?
My fathers parents both came from there.
Alfred Nelson, and Sylvia Marie Piispanen.
They came to the Boston area, settled in West Quincy, where they were married Jan 1908,
Alfred died in 1941, and Sylvia in 1978.
They had one son(my dad) Arvo who died in 1952.

Karoline Kinnunen was my great grandmother(grandmothers mother) and her father was Laurie Piispanen, who I believe came to Boston in 1893 or so maybe on the SS California(n),
My grandmother and all but 1 of her sibblings came to Boston too by 1900.

Frank Nelson, Hjalmar Nelson, (his wife Selma>
Some records I've gotten say Selma was Alfred's wife but that is wrong, both couples lived near each other in West Quincy, so there probably was an error in taking the inf, by census taker.

b

I am looking for any information on my great grandparents. My father always told me that they came to the US from Finland and arrivd in Fairport Harbor Ohio. They had three children who were all born in the US. Elmer, Hilja (my grandmother) and Wolfred. I am not sure if the spelling of their name was changed or not. Their name may have been spelled Pbaanan in Finland. My grandmother was born in 1903 I think. My great grandparents names were. John. Ivar. And Sofia. I came across a draft registration for him after he was in the US but that is all I can find,

This man will have all the information you would need back many generations, as he is a genealogist with whom I work doing research. Both your grandparents were born in the same parish in Finland. You do not have the village name exactly correct, but I knew instantly what it was, and verified it by looking at the passport records. I was there twice last year.

It's all my pleasure! I'm so addicted to genealogy and it's exciting to find a distant cousin from USA. I think we are actually 3th cousins. The brothers Sakari and Tobias Puukangas are our great-great-great-grandfathers. I just putted one "great" too much to my previous message. English is not my mother tongue so I have sometimes difficulties to write it properly.

I have born and spent my youth in Kokkola which is the town with Kälviä was just consolidated. Now I live in Jyväskylä in Central Finland.

I think that picture of the farm was taken in the late 90´s. I need to say that my kinship to the people who live there nowadays is so distance (they are perhaps my 3th or 4th cousins, too) that I don't actually know them. According to the web pages of Kälviä they have quited agriculture in the early 90's.

Wow, good information. So I guess technically we're cousins. How far removed I don't know though! DO you live in the Kalvia area now? Oh, and my mother wanted to know if you knew when that picture of the Puukangas farm was taken?

Well, Sakari Puukangas (b. 1821), the brother of Tobias Puukangas, is my great-great-great-great-grandfather. Sakari moved from Puukangas farm to Himanka. Their brothers Elias, Antti and Abraham stayed in Puukangas. I think the people who live there nowadays are directly their descendants. Their father Antti Eliaanpoika (Elias' son) Klapuri-Puukangas was a son of cantor. The family moved from the cantor's residence to Puukangas farm after their father dead.

The grandfather of Sakari and Topias and others, cantor Elias Klapuri (lived 1717-1784), was from Klapuri farm. Klapuri farm had fields, cattle and a hop garden. Elias Klapuri's father was Josef Klapuri jr (1659-1734). Elias' mother and Josef's wife Malin Karvonen (1675-1758) was from Veteli and she was the ruler of the Klapuri farm after his husband died. Elias Klapuri's father Josef Klapuri sr. (1617-1697) was also a cantor. And Josef's father was perhaps Lauri Kettunen-Herronen from the Herronen farm. Lauri was probably a son of Olavi Kettunen, a settler from Eastern Finland. He lived in the late 16th century.

I think there's a lot of descendants of Puukangas family in Central Ostrobothnia. Many of them hasn't actually Puukangas as surname because in Western Finland people changed their surnames when they moved from a farm to another.
The Tobias Puukangas I have was born in 1825 and was married to Brita Hyyppa. He was my great-great-great grandfather. It's too bad that Kalvia is so far from Helsinki, because I'll be in Helsinki in December. From what I understand, it's about 6 hours by car/train....too far for a day trip. How are you related to Tobias?

How cool that you actually have a picture of the Puukangas farm! Is it still in the family? I'd love to visit it someday. My grandmother will be so excited to see this picture. She's getting very old and losing some of her faculties, and she often regresses into speaking Finnish. Unfortunately, neither my mother or I speak any Finnish other than the swearing we learned from her ;-) Actually, I am trying to learn some basic Finnish for my trip later this year. Kiitos for this information. I'd love to hear more if you have any other information for me.
Hello from Finland!

I find your post when I googled the name Puukangas. I think that your Tobias Puukangas is either a brother or an uncle of my ancestor in direct paternal line. Is your Tobias born in 1825 or in 1848?

Kälviä is the name of the parish and pitäjä means just "parish". Vaasa means "the province of Vaasa". Kälviä was part of that province and Vaasa was the province's capital.

You can find information about Kälviä from the Wikipedia Article.:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%A4lvi%C3%A4.

Here is also a picture of the Puukangas farm in Kälviä:
http://ww.kalvia.fi/kultt/Kuvat2/210puuk.jpg

I'm trying to find out where Vaasalanni, Kalvia Pitaja is in Finland. According to the geneology documents I have, my great-great grandfather was from there, yet I can't find any mention of the location online. I can find both Vaasa and Pitaja, but they appear to be in different regions. Is it possible that the names of those places have been changed since 1853? Great-great grandfathers name was Tobias Puukangas and great-great grandmother was Liisa Hyyppa. Any help is appreciated!

I'm seeking an information about our relative.
My great grandmother Brita Johanna was born on 16th of January 1873.
Her father's name was Kalle Kustaanpoika Badstubacka (later
Pirttisalo) and her mother's name was Maija Liisa Matintytär.

She left her 4-year-old son (Hugo Ilmari was my grandfather)
and her life in Finland behind.

She left Kälviä, Finland on 8th of April 1902, on that time she was 29 years old. She travelled (by American Line) to North-America, Painesville Ohio.

After that we know nothing about her. Recently my two aunts
told that their mother (my grandmother) said many years ago
that Brita Johanna had got married. Is that true, we don't know.

We would be so happy if we found our relatives in the USA.

Best Regards, Tiina Saxberg (maiden name Pirttisalo)
Kathleen,

The Finnish and Hungarian people and languages are related. They branched off from a common Proto-Uralic origin quite long ago however so one can't find many similar words today. Please see for instance ´WHERE DO FINNS COME FROM? ´ http://sydaby.eget.net/swe/jp_finns.htm

Please try the Hungary Genealogy Forum http://genforum.genealogy.com/hungary where I for instance see the name Lajos Reich whom I have earlier been in touch with.

Google search reveals that the name Csurolyai occurs in Sweden but I suggest they are descendants of Hungarian immigrants.

Best regards,
Staffan
