My 3rd great grandfather is named Frank Plowmaker (1851 - ??). He married Permilia Jane Rapp (1853 – 1923) and together they gave birth to my 2nd great grandmother Lydia Jane Plowmaker (1877 – 1932).
The trail goes cold when I get to Frank. According to a census, he was born in Penn but his father (unknown) and mother (unknown) were listed as being born in Germany.
I believe that Plowmaker was probably a name given to him either by an immigration official or he (or his father) anglicized it.
My question is, if my theory is right, what was the name before Plowmaker? Was there a typical german name that was changed to Plowmaker?
