Classification: Query
Surnames: Bricou, Bricon, Brecount, Brickon, Conelly
I am looking for advice for where to look for more info on my Salomon Bricou = Brecon = Brecount ancester... as well as reading / history material for the following places and times:
All of this is from other researchers that I need to verify:
1. 20 August 1699 Salomon Bricon registered at the French Church, La Tabernacle, in London.
Q. Is it safe to assumet that Solomon immigrated in 1699 from France?
Q: What does "registering" actually mean? How long would a person be in a country before one "registered". Should I look in other church records as well? Can any assumptions being made about people being registered around the same time? eg. would French refugees from the village show up at the same church at the same time?
Q. Why would an immigrant go to the Tabernacle church and not to another church, say Threadneedle? .eg would one go to the closest church, or was there social class differences between churches? Geographic differences?
Q. Were religious refugees still showing up in 1699? or were these immigrants more economical in nature? Any assumptions that can be made about refugees in 1699?
2. 5, March, 1701 Salomon Bricou and wife passengers on fourth Huegonot ship to Virginia, the Nasseau,
Q: Another person has made the connection of Bricon = Bricou = Brecount that I am following... Are there any arguements for / against this connection? .ie phoenetics etc.
Q. Any assumptions as to why Solomon only stayed in London for 2 years before heading for Virginia? What promises would he have been given? Can I assume that his life in London would not have been that great?
Q. His fellow shipmates... would they have represented a cross section of Huguenots from across the UK, or specifically from a local or specifically from a church? This was the 4th chip to Manikin Town.
3. 1706 Stanten Island Census list's Salomon Brickon's age as 43. & Bety Bricon is the 12th Female surname.
Q. History is pretty clear that the Manikan settlers had a rough time and that many left. How would they have traveled from Virginia to NJ-NY? Who would have paid for the trips? How long did the settlers remain in Virginia before leaving for NJ-NY? Would they have traveled by boat? Any records I should look for?
Q. Why NY-NJ?
4. 1712, Salomon Bricon m. Francoisse Conelly, NYC.
