I am related to Experience Mitchell and was reading, I thought, in the Mayflower Francis Cooke book done by the Mayflower Society, that he was also of Huguenot descent. I can no longer find the reference and am curious to know more about this.
If there is a definite list or even an accepted list of proven Huguenots, I have not been able to locate it.
I am already of Huguenot ancestry due to my connection with Francis Cooke and Hester Mahieu, but would be happy to add the Mitchell family, if they qualify.
I would appreciate any assistance.
Betsy
I learn that the Demaray's spelled Demarest back then were from France, they were of the Huguenots faith. During the 1590's a religious war broke out and a lot of the Huguenots were being killed so the Demaray's escaped France for their religious beliefs.

They had gone to Netherland, Germany before going to Untied States.
Are there still any Demarest in France? Where else did they go to?
DFantana

Comments Re: L'ESCHALLAS - from the Archives

A search for L’ESCHALLAS on the LDS site with exact spelling reveals only three listings, two of which appear to be yours. An open search adds some interesting and apparently relevant documented variations beginning in the 1690s. One assumes that importance of the 1709 document is that it gives a place of origin. There is, of course, the Chateaudun that was in Orleanais and is now in Eure-et-Loir. However a search for the exact phrase “Chateaudun de Bosse or “Chateaudun en Beause” gives a goose egg on Google.

The following site
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~frpayments/Index.htm
reveals a listing for Anne LESCHALLAS, a cloth merchant’s widow, age 75 in 1705. She is listed as originally from “Chareaudun”, but I’ll put my two Francs on this being a typo. A second listing exists for Anne LE CHALAS in 1707 but without these details. She is at least, if nothing else, old enough to be Samuel’s mother.

For goodness sake, don’t rush into any French research. I suggest you sneak up on it very carefully.

Regards
KA

NC in 1748 leaving seven children whose many descendants now live throughout the southern US.

Filiau and Filiaut are what Ancestry gives as original French spellings of the name.

John was in NC at least by 1738 when he received a land grant but it is likely that the family spent a generation or so in European exile before migrating to N. Am.

I am searching for information about the TIBERGHEIN name. Charles and Zacheus TIBERGHEIN are listed in the 1810 Census records for Elizabeth, Ohio County, W. Virginia in the 1810 Census. By 1820, they are gone. Possible Zacheus went to Ohio. Another branch of the family, possibly sons of Charles, went to Kentucky, then on to Indiana and Missouri.
This family did not stay anywhere for a long time, rather they kept going west. Anyone with more information? Thanks for any help with this. Donna Ozenne

PASTEUR, BEVIER, DEMILLE: 1700+ Manakin, VA

I am interested in finding material on all of these names; however, it is the PASTEURS that I am having the most trouble with. They came over on the "Nassau" in 1700 to Manakin, VA. Some of them went to Isle of Wight, VA and Hampton; others went to Williamsburg, VA. The line of the family that I am having trouble tracing is the line that ended up in New Bern, NC. They have many of the same names: William, Blouvet, James and the same occupations: doctors. William was born about 1756 and was hung by Tories in 1789. Does anyone have any input? I know one of the VA group went to England to study medicine at St. Thomas Hospital. Another went to England to study for the ministry. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Beth
Atlanta, GA USA

Maxey’s of Goochland County and Hugeuenots of Manakintown

I am a descendent of Maxcey Ewell who married Ann Mullens in 1769. The father of Ann Mullens is John Mullens who I believe is a Huguenot, based on research I have done within the Huguenot of Manakintown library and related resources. Maxey is a strong Huguenot name. I am seeking to find whether a “Maxey” married into on of the following families who are located in Goochland, Cumberland, and Chesterfield counties between the late 1600’s and 1750.

Thomas Yuille of Scotland (Chesterfield Co.,)
Thomas Yuille Jr. (Chesterfield Co., Cumberland)
John Yuille (Goochland)
George Yuille (Chesterfield)
Widdow Youell 1690 (Hanover)
Francis Yeule 1687 (Henrico)
Francis Youle (Henrico) (Has a daughter Mary, Elisabeth, and Slave Daniel)
Thomas Exell 1641 (Charles City)

QUESTIION 1: Do you find a Yuille/Youell/Yeule etc in any of your family trees during the early 1700’s?

Any other thoughts?
Mullens of Manakintown, Albermarle and Goochland County

I am researching the John Mullins family. I desire to find descendents of this family to help in collaboration of our research. I descend through Ann Mullens who married Maxcey Ewell 1769 in Goochloand County, VA. I have tracked John from Goochland to Albermarle. I spend a couple weeks in those counties search out homesteads and county records and state records in Richmond at the Library of Virginia and found much more than I had found to date. John is listed several times in “THE HUGUENOT” in Volume 7 page 256 along with other members of his family.

Based on the research I have done, I believe that John Mullins is a descendent of the Huguenot Society of Manakin.

QUESTION 1: Does John descend from Abraham Mullens/Moulins who arrived in Manakin in late 1600’s (who later went to North Carolina)?
I yes, how? Who is his father?
If no, what do you think and the reason for your thoughts?

QUESTION 2: John Mullens is married to Elizabeth Connerly. Who are her parents? (I have not been able to place any Connerly in Goochland.)

QUESTION 3: Which of John Mullens children not go with him to Albemarle? Where did they go?

QUESTION 4: Do you know any decendents of Abraham Mullens? If yes, I would like very much to speak and share research with them.
Do any DePriest researchers have good links or leads about (1) Robert Depress's parents, either earlier in Virginia, England, France or elsewhere in Europe? (2) Most citations say b. France ca. 1660, but it is possible that his parents or even grandparents were part of the Huguenot settlements in Virginia in the 1620s. Just wondering if anyone has any good links or leads.

I am looking for information that can prove that the name JETER is of Huguenot descent. I have read it some were, which I believe was in the book Old Churches, Ministers and Families of Virginia. I believe that the JETER name is of Huguenot descent because of its spelling and many of my ancestors were farmers and ministers of the protestant faith.

My health is of were I do not travel and is not getting better and this would be a immense contribution as I could validate this, as I am writing a book. My research and writing my book is what keeps me going.
TRIPLETT: Huguenot Ancestry but finding no records in US!

Help anyone~
Is this a site for ancestors lost because they were Huguenots leaving 'no records'!
Family records claim John Triplett was of ‘Huguenot’ heritage, "kicked out of France" (or wherever homeland is because I can't even connect back to his birth state of VA!) and sailing to New York in 1620’s. I found marriage record in Vermilion Co., IL where he m.Isabelle Thompson on 5 Sep 1868. Family belief is that he left family’s VA plantation (with slaves) to avoid the Civil War draft-- and if he wanted to get lost—he accomplished it ‘big time’! His parents and VA beginnings are unknown! Census records agree that birth was in VA [In 1838-41, that would be The Virginia Territory]
'My Great Grandad John Triplett had one dogmatic remark he often made that he was not French: "I am Pennsylvania Dutch"'! I have nothing indicating the Triplett's were ever in Pennsylvania. Cnesus records agree that he and his parents were born in VA --John Triplett born in 1838-41 (depending on what source is used).
I am missing 200 years + of TRIPLETT family history in America: that is, acknowledging that they sailed to New York in the 1620’s and acknowledging my GreatGrandad’s birth in approximately 1840! Any suggestions flash into your mind?
Would love to hear from any one finding difficulty with Huguenot heritage!
With Appreciation,
Marcia Smith
Hi listers I am new to the list,
My name is William Short and I live in America. I have traced my ancestors back to a Julian Mezick born 1645. Julian was transported by John Tilney to Accomack County, Virgina in 1664/5. In 1674, he moved into Somerset County, Maryland and married a Sarah Covington. In 1681, he acquired 100 acres of land which he called Nantes, which is theorized he was a Huguenot, this is based on his choice to name his land for Edict of Nantes. I am trying to find who Julian's parents and siblings were and if he really did come France. If any one on this list would happen to have or know of anything about Julian Mezick, any information you would share would be greatly appreciated. You may e-mail me direct at wbshort7777@coastalnow.net, thanking you in advance for any information.
William and Rachelle Short

Huguenots from Manakin to New York / New Jersey

I would like information or thoughts on the liklihood or examples of Huguenots leaving the Manakin community and traveling to New Jersey.

I'm trying to understand how my ancestor Salomon Bricon traveled to Manakin in 1701 and shows up on Staten Island in 1706.

My brief reading of the history is that dropping 4 boat loads of city-folk on the flood plains of virgin woods in Virginia lead to a few problems, to say the least.

Many refugees left the Manakin settlement. I've found examples of some of the wealthier refugees making their way to the settled towns of Virginia.

Is it likely that these refugees would have traveled to the other Huguenot communities in North America, such as New York?

If so, how did they do it? Travel in Virginia, even up to the American Civil war, was primarily along the rivers. So it had to involve boat travel, and therefore money. Something these refugees did not have.

Thanks.

Info re: French Huguenots in Santa Domingo (Haiti)

Some of the French Huguenots were granted land here, for Plantations (Sugar Cane/Coffee, more) They used African Slaves for labor and eventually there became a sub-culture of Mulattos who were ranked higher than blacks and below the white plantation owners. Eventually the friction resulted in slave uprisings and revolt, during the time the French had the LA Purchase in the US. Europe had also become very dependent on these resources for their economy and tried to step in and resolve the crisis. Eventually the cost became so exhorbitant that Napoleon had to sell off the holdings in America. I have several surnames/lines who were involved in these dealings as plantation owners, at least. They were:
Gardner/Ridor(e/o) Americanized as Ryder/Rider/Ritter; Langier, became Lanier/Langer and Raison became Raison and Reason. I think my Gardners (who it's said was a Hugenot) was from the French region of Bordeaux, as the others were and were the DesJardiniers, from that area. It is difficult to keep the names straight in some cases because so many variations ensued such as the Raisons, who's title included my Marquis Louis Marie Modeste Raison de la Geneste (The Raison family from Bordeaux, Geneste, France).

Mary Elizabeth TRUAX: bn 1813 OH, marr 1830 OH, died 1877 Indiana

I have been told that Mary Elizabeth Truax is from Huguenot stock. She has gone by Mary Truax and also Elizabeth Truax (census'). She married John B. Collins on 30 Sep 1830 in Miami Co., Ohio. She died 16 Jan 1877 in Starke Co., Indiana. She had several children in Ohio and several in Indiana. She and her husband moved to Indiana about 1840 from Ohio. They were among the pioneer settlers of Starke Co. and located there before the organization of the county government. John B. Collins was of scotch-irish ancestry. The Collins home was one of the first civilized inhabitations in the vicinity of Bass Lake.

Does anyone know this family?

Thank you,
Cyndi

My husband's family includes many early Kentucky families, one of which is the LaRues, for whom LaRue county is named.
I have an Isaac LaRue, Sr. born before 1712, unknown location>Jacob LaRue b 1744 VA or KY>Hannah LaRue b. circa 1772 VA, died KY.
I have no earlier information on these LaRues, but as the name seems to be French or Belgian, I wonder if they were Huguenot or Walloon. Does anyone know?
Regards, Jennifer Griffith Vincent of Washington state

Robert ran the first "hotel" and traded with the Indians. Peter married Sarah Campbell and fought in the Revolution, he was taken prisoner at Brandywine in 1777 and shot for complaining about the inhuman prison conditions.
I have information that Pierre Guerri (son of Jacques Guerri and d'Anne Guerri) and his wife Jeanne Broussard Guerri(daughter of Louis Broussard and Judith Broussard) were from de Seuvet en Poitou. They appearantly left there and went to Dublin where their oldest son Francois was born. They had had 4 children in SC (Jean, Pierre, Jean-Jacques, and Jeanne-Elizabeth) before they were naturalized in SC in 1696. Does anyone know if Seuvet was a town. I can find no record of it? Might this be a misprint? Any one with information on the Guerris or Broussards in France, please contact me.
Faun Harrop

My great grandfather, wife and 3 children didnt come to the US until 1867, apparently having lived in Germany a number of years after leaving France, possibly Alsace/Lorraine His name Auguste Charle, my grandfather Hugo Robert Charle, both teachers at Lutheran schools. I havent found any other Charle family in the St.Louis or Quincy area, except for his many descendents. Would like to hear from Charle families in other parts of the world who also had to leave France but chose not to come to the US. Or any who were able to remain or returned later. Other than teaching I have no knowledge of their occupations, except that one ancestor was said to have worked "in the king's stable" which may or may not have een true. Thanks to anyone who responds

My 4-5th great grandfather John Hughes married Mary (Polly) Williams Jean in 1805 in Albemarle County. My Hughes family migrated to Albemarle and Amherst Counties from Cumberland and Buckingham Counties. I have another ancestor (Bouth Napier) who lived in the Cumberland County area who reportedly married a French Huguenot. I cannot find a "Jean" family (Jean is surname) in the area at that time. Can anyone help me find the family of Jean, or tell me if this is possibly a descendant of a French Huguenot emigrant. Thanks.

I'd like to take a moment to let you all know that there is another message board that may be helpful in your Huguenot research:

http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/board/an/topics.religious....

While the Huguenots-Walloons Message Board is limited to posts pertaining strictly to Huguenots in Europe, it is a good place to check to see if you can find family connections or information on French Protestants and their movements.

Best of luck with your detective work, and please continue to let others know about this message board as well.

Thanks,

Karen Greim Mullian
booboopies@aol.com

EMBRY in France or Wales

It is my belief that the Embrys, HENRY EMBRIE (EMBRY) in particular, were French Huguenots. He was born abt. 1615, and sailed aboard the "America" to Virginia in 1635.

The Embrees of Southern America and Canada are Huguenots.

His father may be John Embry born in France in 1555 or
1559. Maybe a Jean EMBRY?

John's father is said to be Wyllm Embry, place of birth listed "France/Wales". No one know where this information came from...

Protestant refugees fled into England from Picardy, Artois, Hainault and Flanders (also in the north). There is an EMBREVILLE and a town called EMBRY, in Pas-de-Calais, Picarde area. And a Chateau d'Embry, of which I have not been able to find the history.

The Embry population in France, these days is in the south, Aude area, and EMBRES-et-Castelmaure in the Languedoc-Roussillon area.

94.84% of Embrys are in the USA, 3.78% in France and 0.3% in England (the percentage goes down from there).

Although unsubstantiated, the original family name is said to be d' Embry or d'Amaury.

Giselle Marise Embry
Dr Lewis Mauzy (d ante 17500, of Dublin & of Exeter, England

I would very much like to learn the names of the parents, siblings & grandparents of my Huguenot ancestor, my GGGGGG-Gdfather, Dr Lewis Mauzy (b ca 1670-80; d ante 1750). I don't know where he was born - France, England or Ireland. He probably died in Exeter, England, since a 1759 deed (Irish Registry of Deeds) refers to "Lewis Mauzy, Esquire, Doctor in Physick, late of the City of Exeter deceased."
In 1699, Lewis Mauzee earned his degree in medicine from Trinity College, Dublin. Circa 1705-10, he married Anne Hutchinson (living 1759), daughter of Edward Hutchinson (1632-99), of Knocklofty, Clonmel, Tipperary, by his wife, Anne Batty.
Lewis & Anne Mauzee [or Mauzy] had five known children:
1. Lewis Mauzy II (b ca 1705-20; d 1779, Dublin), of Dublin & of Clonmel, Tipperary; died unmarried
2. Elizabeth Mauzy (b ca 1710-15; d 1799, Clonmel, Tipperary); married Edward Long (d 1773, City of Cork), of Lacken House, Ardfinnan, & of Cahir Abbey, both in Tipperary. Elizabeth & Edward Long were the parents of my GGGG-Gdfather, Colonel Richard Hutchinson Long (1740-1814), of Longfield House, Cashel, Tipperary.
3. Anne Mauzy, christened 1711, Barnstaple, Devon, England
4. Jane Mauzy, ch 1712, Barnstaple, Devon, England
5. Mary Mauzy, ch 1718, Barnstaple, Devon, England
One of the daughters - either Anne, Jane or Mary, married John Bryan of the City of Waterford, Ireland.
Of interest, my 7th Gt-Gdfather (& ancestor of the earls of Donoughmore), the above mentioned Edward Hutchinson (1632-1699), of Knocklofty, Tipperary, was a first cousin to Edward Hutchinson (1613-75), of Boston & of Newport, Rhode Island, Ancestor of Presidents George Bush I & II, of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, & most likely, of Marilyn Monroe too.
I would be most appreciative of any information or assistance anyone out there in GenealogyLand might be able to offer.
Cheers!
GUIER - is it a Huguenot name?

Among the wave of refugees that fled down the Rhine in 1709 there was the family of Johann David Geyer. They got to London but had to return because he refused to become an Anglican. Later, when some of these Palatine families settled in Ireland, there was a David Gier among them. David's son Philip (d. 1778 in Co. Limerick) became the teacher in the local German school and later Burgomaster of the town of Ballingarrane. I am researching the life of Adam Guier of Kingsessing, Philadelphia (d. 1789) and wonder if his family was of Huguenot origin. Does anyone know of any Huguenot Guiers? Thanks, Os Cresson

Am looking for information on the Charsha (pronounce Char - shay') family line which family tradition has always maintianed were from the Alsace-Lorraine area and were Huguenots. Other spellings found today are Charshe', Charshee, Charche'.

We believe they arrived in 1678 and came to Annapolis. Unsure if they came directly from France (possibly Strasbourg) or via another country as we have found evidence of the surname in England. My family lists an Edward and Phebe Charshe as one of the early families in Maryland.
Also unsure as to how the name would have been spelled in its truly French form - (and I do not know any French.)
Thanks for any help.

Thomas Cary was supposedly a well to do Chas. S.C. merchant who married a dtr of the local governor,John Archdale. He then was appointed depty governor in Bath,N.C.around 1705.He was close friends with one Levi Truewhitt who became a court recorder in Bath although Trewhitt may have been in area earlier than 1705.Both are supposedly of Huguenot origin.Does anyone have records of early S.C. Huguenot surnames.I am trying to devlop Trewhitt's migration to NC.He supposedly came via England, but I can not find any info on him before 1700.
Both of these men took part in the failed Cary Rebellion of 1711,were sent back to England for trial, eventually acquitted, and at least Trewhitt returned to his scene of crime settling near New Bern.If anyone has info on the proceedings of the Cary Rebellion trial from archives in NC would appreciate what you can share also.

Earliest finding of ancestor is Isaac Reveille, in New York.
He was born 1766. Left eastern seaboard about 1830. Stopped in southwestern Ohio for a while. Family then went to Indiana. Anyone have any information about this family in New York? Believe to be Huguenot. Nothing firm. Would appreciate any leads.

I am researching the family of Sylvester Deputy who was in Delaware before 1741 when he received a Penn Land Warrant. He was alledgedly a French Hugenot whose family had fled to Wales and later to America. Old family story states that the name used in Wales was Dupaty and changed to Deputy after arriving in this country.
What was the name originally? DePuy perhaps?

This message board was requested to provide a venue for researchers to post queries and information regarding the many Huguenots who came from France, Germany, and England to settle in the eastern seaboard colonies of America. It is separate from the message board for researching Huguenots in Europe, although there will undoubtedly be many overlaps.

I am NOT the board administrator, nor am I an expert in Huguenot genealogy. I am looking to other Huguenot researchers for guidance.

Please feel free to post your research questions or findings on your Huguenot ancestors who settled in America during the 17th/18th centuries.

Karen Greim Mullian
booboopies@aol.com

Coquelin/Banzet

Sebastian Coquelin is mentioned in Stapleton's Memorials of the Huguenots (1901) in which Stapleton writes:

"In Cocalico [Township, Lancaster County, PA] appears the name of Sebastian Coquelin, who arrived in 1739 with his family, of whom Jean and Dietrich were adults. The name has been perverted to 'Cockly' and 'Cocklin.'

I am descended from this Sebastian Coquelin. Here is the family info for the first and second generations:

1 Sebastian Coquelin	b: May 10, 1686, d: 1751, m. Jean Nicholas Coquelin, b: February 20, 1717/18, d: April 29, 1796, mMagdalena B. Eberly
5. Anna-Catherine Coquelin b: November 30, 1719, d: 1725
6. Sarah Coquelin	b: 1721	d: August 28, 1725
7. Catharine Coquelin	b: October 12, 1723, m. John Disler
8. Sarah Coquelin	b: January 08, 1726/27 d: January 22, 1798, m. David Brecht b: September 08, 1719 in Palatinate, Germany	d: September 22, 1783, s/o Johannes-Stephen Brecht and Anna Margaret Ulrich - Sarah and David are my line.
9. Jean-Jacques Coquelin b: April 04, 1730 d: 1732
10. Jacob Coquelin	b: March 20, 1732/33	d: November 19, 1799

In my records about Johannes-Stephen Brecht, I have the following note (source unknown): Came from Palatinate to New York State, c. 1720. Settled first in Schoharie, New York; due to hostilities, forced to move to Pennsylvania.

Information on this family very welcome!

Karen Greim Mullian
booboopies@aol.com

Royer

From Memorials of the Huguenots by A. Stapleton (1901), p. 114

"ROYER - The Royer family (also written Reyer and Rier) has ever been a prominent one in France and many noted men of this name occur. The family was mostly seated in the northern part, especially in the vicinity of Metz, from whence a number tired to the Palatinate in consequence of the Revocation. One branch was numbered with the nobility. A nobleman named Jacques Royer, a prominent Protestant, suffered the loss of his estates in the persecutions prior to the Revocation. An association in America by the descendants of the early Royer emigrants to Pennsylvania was formed in 1897 for the recovery of the confiscated estates of that nobleman, whom they claim as their ancestor. Several families of this name fled from Tours at the Revocation and came with the Huguenot Colony to South Carolina.
"Sebastian Royer, who was born near the city of Metz, retired to the Palatinate about the Revocation period, and in 1718 came to Pennsylvnaia and settled in Lancaster county. He was a prominent member of the Baptist Brethren and his numerous descendants have mostly adhered to that faith. Many have been eminent as ministers and teachers.
"In 1729 John Jacob Royer, another prominent member of the Brethren Church, arrived and located near Lititz in the same county. Another branch emanate from John Michael Royer (1) who arrived in 1732 and located in Upper Salford, Montgomery county.
"(1) He was the son of John Michael and Catharine Royer, and was born 1686 in Swabach in the Palatinate. He was thrice married and the father of twenty-four children and the progenitor of a great posterity. See 'The Perkiomen Region,' Vol. 1"

Karen Greim Mullian
booboopies@aol.com
