"In general the Canadian passage cost 3 pounds and the American around 5 pounds" in famine years 1845-47, see "The Graves are Walking" by John Kelly pg 266

After the tremendous number of immigrants died in 1847 on the ships landing at Gross Isle, Quebec the provincial governments increased the emigrant tax from 5 shillings per head to 10 shillings and for arrivals in October and later it was 30 shillings plus additional tax if a ship was quarantined. So after 1849 the number of immigrants to Canada decreased by 80,000 and the number to the US increased 70,000.
