Surnames: YOUNG
The legend has it that a band of five - or seven - brothers called YOUNG left Scotland for England to find their fortunes. Dangerous times, and they were taken up near JEDBURGH in the Scottish Borders and accused of sheep rustling. Falsely accused, the brothers claimed. for it was a clan of reiver Youngs from Teviotdale who were to blame. Or were they?

No matter. 'Hang them all! ' was the cry and the verdict. Swift justice - all but two were hanged.
Those two headed into Northumberland county in England and settled there.

Somehow one YOUNG family turns up later in Ireland in County Mayo. John marries Mary Heneghan and they have three bairns - John, Margaret and Mary in the 1850s.

We lose The father John and his daughter Margaret, We think they emigrated to the USA.

If you are a YOUNG and know the story, or a variation of it, you are one of our YOUNGs. We would love to hear from you.
