1870 Emigration from Norway

I have 2 questions 1) John E Skundberg emigrated from Norway in 1870, the family changed surname to Anderson some where between 1880 Census and 1900. John's son Marthinus Skundberg aka Martin S Anderson has an 1882 naturalization date on the 1920 census. Same year he got married (I think). Did the name change require "formal" documentation?
2) What name would his naturalization papers be under?
I can track him via census records from 1880 to 1930.

Thanks much!
Thanks much!

surnames

I have recently found out the some of my foathers ancestors came from norway. But I was told that something happened to make them either flee or get kickedout of the country. So my family doesn't want me looking into the history. I am curious though. The American version of the name is Koth. My family won't give me any information on this family and money is short at this time. So I can't get a professional to do it for me. I have checked the Norwegian surname list and Koth isn't on it.I'm thinking they might have changed it when they came to America. If anyone has ANY info on it please let me know. Even just suggestions on how to go about finding out would help. Thank you.

Ellisiv Moe

Hi! I am stuck on a relative of mine, and hope someone might be able to help me.

My great-grandfather's elder sister left Norway at a young age. She came to Edison Park, Illinois, where she shortly after passed away. It is believed that she died from pneumonia.

Her first name was Ellisiv (this could also be written as Ellizif, Ellisif, Elliziv or even Eillizif). Her surname was Moe, and her middle name, from her mother's side, Ulve. It is unclear whether she used only one of these, or both.

I know she was born in September 1890. She probably left for the States to live with relatives in the Chicago area. One source claims she travelled on the ship "Tasso". But I don't know if she only went with it to England and from there took another ship to the States, or whether she travelled with it across the Atlantic. Her date of death is June 26 1909, so that narrows it down a bit. She probably went at around the age of 18.

So I know that she went to America, I just can't seem to find her anywhere. I would really like to see the passenger list with her name on it, maybe there is something stated there I don't already know about her. Maybe it says who she travelled with.

Anyway, I hope there's someone out there willing to help.

Thanks!

After arriving in Canada, they traveled west in Canada, then south to Boyd, MN where their 3 children were born: Anna Marie [my paternal Grandmother] who was born in 1895 & passed away in 1935 in Hawkins, WI; Esther who was born in 1897; & Arthur who was born in 1902. Eskel, Ingeborg, & their children then moved to a farm near Dresser, WI in the early 1900s. I am looking for the Dates & Places of Birth of Eskel & Ingeborg plus the Date & Place of their marriage. I am also looking for the Date of their migration to Canada & the name of the ship on which they sailed to Canada.

Lars Peder was born 10 Nov 1888 in Holsen, Førde, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. He emigrated 22 Mar 1907 and he came to New York 5 Apr 1907. This is the last sign of Lars Peder. His destination was family/relatives in Warren, Minnesota.

However, my grandmother (half sister of Lars Peder) told me that the family i Norway never heard of him after the emigration.

I guess something serious must have happened to him, either in New York after arrival, or on the way to Warren, Minnesota.

Is there any way to find out about missing/dead immigrants back in 1907?

Arne

Halvor Halverson was my great grand father. He was born on 29 Aug 1859, married in 1880 to Mathea "Mattie" Martinsdatter Pedersen/Petersen. They had one child born in Norway, Harald Martinus 26 Jan 1881 in Skein Norway.
This is all the information that I have on their life in Norway, I could use proof of their marriage and the birth of their son. This family immigrated between 1881 and 1882 to America. I don't have any more information on that either. My grand mother, their second child was born in Dec 1882 in South Dakota.
Please any help that you could provide would be most helpfull. I know that Halvor has sisters who stayed in Norway, but some of his wifes brothers immigrated to America and most of them settled around Brookings, South Dakota under the last names of Martin; Martinsen; Pedersen; or Peterson. Their names were:
Haaken b: 12 Sep 1852 Oppland Norway
Borre b: 14 Dec 1853
Hans Christian b: 24 May 1857 Oppland Norway
Peder b: 19 Apr 1859

I am trying to find immigration records for an Anthony Rud, who immigrated from Norway in 1877. He was born in 1863 in Norway, and ended up in Chicago. I am trying to find out exactly when he came over, from which part of Norway he was from, and what ship he traveled on. I am not really sure where to look. Ancestry.com didn't have anything listed in their records, and I don't really know where else to look. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. You can contact me at cmurray71@gmail.com
I am searching for the children and grandchildren of Ingebrigt Ingebrigtsen Bjørsnes. Ingebrigt was born in Sandnes, Eide paa Nordmøre, Norway in 1885. His parents was Ingebrigt Johansen Sandnes (Bjørsnes) and Magdalena Ingebrigtsdatter. Ingebrigt emigrated to Minnesota in 1901 on a ship from Kristiansund, Norway. His sister Ingeborg was born 1896 and emigrated later to join her brother.
My mother says that they were living in Los Angeles, California in the 50s and 60s. I believe they then spelled their last name Bjorsnes or Bjorsnos. Ingeborg remained unmarried, but Ingebrigt married and had at least three children. Please, is there anybody who is able to help me to information about them after they reached the US?

We recently learned that our ancestors worked their way across from Norway as sailors probably on the ship Activ. According to naturalization papers they came into New York in 1883 but we can find no record of entry on the Ellis Island or Castle Garden site. Where do we go from here? Would sailors have a different place to check in?

In his petition for naturalization, he states the following -- emigrated from Liverpool on 2 Feb 1901 and arrived in San Francisco on 10 Aug 1902 on the ship "Cleaverdoon". He mentioned these same facts on 3 different documents.

I have searched several places on the web and can't find any information about the "Cleaverdoon". Has anybody heard of the Cleaverdoon before? Also, 18 months seems like a long time in transit.. I am assuming he transferred somewhere on the East Coast, like NY or Quebec before heading out west?

Any leads, commentary, or conjecture would be greatly appreciated :-)

Karen Nelson, born 1842 Olso Norway

Karen/Cary Olson, born 2 Oct 1842 in Oslo, moved to America. Married Alfred Gustaf Olson (who at some point might have started to use the first name of Andrew). The couple lived in Minneapolis Minnesota and had 3 sons, Charles E. born abt. 1876, August born abt. 1878, and Albert born 24 Oct 1880. Albert's baptism certificate listed one of the god parents as Hanna Nelson. Karen was widowed, but we don't know the date. A census record from 1895 shows widow Carrie/Karen Olson age 53 born Norway with occupation of Laundress, with sons, Chas. age 19, August, Age 17 and Albert age 14 (all sons born Minnesota). Also listed with the family is a Nels Nelson age 33 born Norway with the occupation of teamster. Karen died 29 Aug 1925 and was buried at Crystal Lake Cem., Minneapolis MN. We have checked with the staff at this Cem. and find no other family members buried there. The 1925 obit. for Karen listed Charles as being in Chicago, August was not listed so apparently deceased by then and Albert living in
Minneapolis MN. We know from an empty envelope addressed to brother Albert, with a return address that in 1953 Charles was back, living in St. Paul, Minnesota. We are only aware of Albert, his wife and only child. (a daughter) We don't know anything of Charles or his family, but there is a small chance he had a son named David John Olson and a daughter named Ruth. We don't know for sure who Nels Nelson or Hanna Nelson were. Possibly brother and sister to Karen? If anyone knows any of these family members listed please email me at <goldcam@bellsouth.net> This is the family of my husband Jerry. Thanks, Jan Cameron

My granduncle Peder Ingvald was born january 23. 1875 in Skjervoey/ Kvenangen in Troms. Peder was the oldest of 12 brothers/sisters, among them, Gunnar Kaasen, the musher, known from the "serum run" to Nome - Alaska, 1925. Peder left Norway 1904 for his first stay in America. I have no specific information about his destination. However, in 1912, Peder is returning to America, after being in Norway for some time. This time, a record of his travel is available on Ellis Island. The ships manifest states that he is returning to America, that he has stayed there earlier (1905/1908)in Luiney? Oreg., and that he is going to Luiney? Oregon again, to visit "friend" Thomas? Berre, address RF D1 Luiney?.
There is little or no knowlegde of Peders whereabouts after this. Information which could contribute to further knowlegde of his destiny would be highly appreciated.

Sincerely
Tom Kaasen

How will I ever find my family roots?

I don't think I have enough time left on this earth to complete the task of finding my Norwegian ancestral roots.
Last year my Father did two seperate yDNA tests which showed we come from Norwegian ancestry.
My family name is spelled MOODY however I suspect it was originally spelled Moodie or Mudie.
To the best of my ability it appears we descend from the Scottish line of Moodie's who inhabited the Orkney Islands as their genealogy states "from the time of the Viking invasions".

We do not match to any of the 'English' Moody's and there are now many of them in our surname project. However we do seem to have a shred of linking to some Moody's who went to Northern Ireland and my guess would be that these Moody's were from Scotland.

With a name like Moody though, how will I ever find my Norwegian link? The closest I have come to anything that remotely looks like or sounds like Moody in Norway is from the mythological god Thor's son MODI. Perhaps this IS where our name came from. The Moodie's on Orkney claim they are descended from the early Norse Jarls who settled there, and so perhaps this is where our surname came from...the warrior son of Thor - Modi.

My family appears out of nowhere in Jan. 1774 for the first time on record (that I am aware of) in York Co., Maine, USA when my 5th grt. grandfather James MOODY married his Scottish wife Elizabeth Donald. Then they disappear again.
Only from baptism records from this same church do I find out the names of their only known 3 children...Sarah, James and Joseph Moody all born between 1774 and c1781/82.
My family is quite a mystery, and from whom they descend in Norway I may never find out I would love to be able to as my father was most thrilled to find out that we probably descended from the Vikings.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

I have just found a photo at a garage sale of The Norwegian Lutheran Choir from 1922. It was taken by a company in Detroit Michigan, so I am assuming this choir was in the Detroit area of Michigan. It is in excellant condition with individual photos of each member. Other surnames in the picture include; JACOBSEN, ANDERSON, FJELDAHL, JORGENSEN, HOLMEN, MAHLE, HANSEN, KNIGHT, WINSJANSEN, MOHSNES, KROGH, NORDFJORD, HAUG, PELTO
Will make copy if any of these people are your family.

Need help finding Anthony Rud

I am trying to locate any information on my mother's great grandfather. His name was Anthony Rud. All I know about him is that he was born in Norway in March 1863. He immigrated to the U.S. sometime around 1871 (not sure if year is exact) and was naturalized around 1877. I have not been able to find any records of this, just what was listed on one census form. He settled in Illinois. He married Alice Florence Piper and had 3 children (one passed away as a child). I can send more info if needed. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Morstad/Welhaven, Norway to Minnesota

I am looking for help on immigration history of:

Johannes Johannessen, aka John Welhaven
b. 13 January 1869, Gran, Hadeland
Mother: Kiersti Christensdr
Father: Johannes Nilsen

Norwegian records indicate that 1) he left Gran in 1884 and went to Kristiana and 2) left for America in 1893. (source: Utflytta fra Gran 1825-1900 og Jevnaker 1837-1901, Norwegian National Archives, Digitalarkivet online database).

At some time, he changed his name to “John Welhaven” (probably after arriving in the U.S.). He was living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1899 and 1900 (source: city directories and U.S. Census). I have not been able to find a record of him leaving Kristiana/Oslo for the United States, nor a record of his entry into the United States. I am looking for help answering two questions:

1. Am I interpreting the Norwegian record correctly? Did he leave Gran in 1884, but later return to Gran, and then leave again in 1893?

2. Does anyone have any evidence of his emigration from Norway to the United States?
I have requested to administer a board on the surname Overvold. I should like to invite anyone with connections to the Overvold, who immigrated to the U.S. from Norway.

We have some information on the family, who have left records referring to Iowa, Minnesota, South and North Dakota. The family were farmers and had many, many children.

In my searches, I have come across several U.S. Census records where the Overvolds are surrounded by other Norwegians and might be able to help someone from this board with a lead.

Some of the names I have come across include;
Johnson, Peterson and several I am afraid I can't make out due to my ignorance of the Norwegian language.

2d great grandfather was born in Norway in 1863 and came to America between age 16 adn 18 - without his parents. That would be in about 1879 to 1881.

What port would have come into? I don't think Ellis Island was in operation then. How can I find out and get any documents? He died in 1956.

Thanks
David
Searching for Ole Estenson and Ole Torgenson ancestors and descendants

From Belmont Massacre 24 August 1862, Jackson, Minnesota

“From the Langeland home the Sioux proceeded on their way up the river to the homes of Ole Estenson and Ole Torgenson, where they arrived in the evening about dark. Theses men were the only ones in the settlement to make any effort to save their lives except in flight; they had the old Berserker blood in them and put up a good fight . . . They had guns and ammunition and the knowledge and disposition to use them . . . The white men ordered their families to lie down and returned the fire of the enemy so successfully that they fought off every attack. Volley after volley was poured into the house, and the bullets penetrated the walls and roof . . . The white men loaded their army muskets with slugs, and, as it had become dark, they fired only at the flashes of the Indians’ guns. No one within the cabin was hit, and the attackers finally departed.”

• Ole Estenson, Anne Pedersdatter, Ingeborg, born 6 March 1860, Spring Grove, MN [1861, 6, Belmont or 31, Christiania (east of river)]
• Ole Torgenson (Torgeson), 1861, [6, Belmont or 31, Christiania (east of river)]

Quoted from Chapter 2 - - Astri, My Astri: Norwegian Heritage Stories
By Deb Nelson Gourley
see Norwegian Settlement Map for more details
http://www.astrimyastri.com/generic49.html
I have been trying to find information on my great grand mother's family and have not had much luck. I did find her in the social security death index, and we have her marriage certificate. On this certificate her name is Borghild Olga Vangen. She was born in Norway in 1892. We believe that her father was a school teacher in Kongsvinger. We think she had two sisters named Oline and Johanne, and at least one brother who died in infancy or childhood. There may have been more siblings. She met my great grandfather, Linus Berg, on the ship comming from Norway. They married and settled in Coleraine, Minnesota.

I am looking for information about Elling Benjamensen, who I have been told was my great-great grandfather. I think I may have found his family on the census of 1865 in Nordland. I then searched the church records and found where he married a woman named Ida Didricksdatter and had 2 children Hans and Ana. I have been told that he fathered my great grandfather at age 16 with my great grandmother Frederikke Jensen and they did not marry. She had another son named Haldor with another man. Iver Ellingsen lived in Duluth, Minnesota and we understand that he was my great-grandfathers half brother. My great-grandfathers name was Linas Andrew Berg. I appreciate any help I can get with this. We know Haldors family in Bodo already and talk to them frequently. I would like to know if I've found the right man and if there are living relatives. My mother and I are hoping to travel to Norway in three years to see where our ancestors came from. Thank you for your help. Heather Mayo Grand Rapids, Minnesota

My Great-Grandfather, Johannes Tovsen, had 11 first Cousins on his Mother's side of the family, 8 of whom were born in Ovre Eiker, Eker parish, Buskerud County, Norway. Of those 8 born in Ovre Eiker, 7 of them may have migrated to the USA or Canada before 1900 since I haven't been able to locate a listing for any of them in Buskerud County or any nearby Counties in the 1900 Norway Census. Those 7 Cousins who may have migrated were:
(1) Carl Olausen/Olavesen born in 1851.
(2) Theodor Olausen/Olavesen born in 1856.
The Brother of Carl & Theodor, Johan Olausen/Olavesen, was living in Kristiania (later name - Oslo) in 1900. The Parents of Carl, Johan, & Theodor were Olaus/Olaves Jensen & Anne Torkildsdr.
(3) Karl Olsen born in 1855.
(4) Karen Marthine Olsdr born in 1857.
(5) Maren J. Olsdr born in about 1859.
(6) Karoline Antonia Olsdr born in 1863.
The Parents of Karl, Karen, Maren, & Karoline were Ole Knudsen & Anne Kirstine Jensdr.
(7) Ingeborg M. Nilsdr born in about 1863.
Ingeborg's Parents were Nils Jensen & Kristine Olsdr.
Any info about the possible migration of any of these Cousins of Johannes Tovsen would be appreciated plus, if they did migrate, where they settled & any descendants the may have had. Johannes Tovsen remained in Kongsberg, Buskerud County, Norway where he worked in the Silver mines. Johannes' oldest Son, Peder Tovsen, was my Grandfather & Peder migrated from Kongsberg to the USA in 1891.

Hanna Amalie Berg from US to Namibia 1905

My mother Solveig Berg was born in Namibia in 1911, and her mother's name was Hanna Berg. Her father's surname was probably Peter Kröger.

One of Solveig's godfathers was Anna Kröger, b. Johnsen, married to Johanes Amandus Kröger. They resided in Fredrikstad, Norway, in 1900.

I have no other definite information about Hanna, but some indication that she is identical to Hanna Amalie Berg, b. 1 Apr 1869 in Eidskog, Norway. She landed at Ellis Island 29 Jun 1905, destined for her brother Hans Berg, Grand Rapids, Wisc. In 1917, she lives in Oslo, Norway.

I wonder whether anyone knows how to trace people travelling from the US to South Africa (Cape Town?) or possibly Lüderitz, Swakopmund or Walvis Bay in Deutch Südwest Afrika.

Regards,
Jens Kaasbøll

I am searching for the ancestors of Ingebrigt Ingebrigtsen Bjørsnes.
He had a father named Rasmus which would be my great grandfather.
He was called King of the Ulvestads. Later his son Raguar was called the king of the river. Raguar also had twin children that died. My father Arne (Arne Bendik's sone) also had two sets of twins. I am one of the twins in the second set. Andrew had another brother named Peter Ulvestad. So I think altogether there was Arne Bendik Ulvestad, Andrew Ulvestad and Peter Ulvestad. I know that there is one cousin of my father's from Peter's family that is named Berta Ulvestad and a married name Don't know what that is. If anyone has any information please email me thank you

Hi,
I am looking for Inger Anna Eriksen (my great-grandmother), born 4/8/1852 i Asenfjord, Norway. Her maiden name was Lillenes, however, she grew up on the farm Ness. She left Norway on 8/8/1888. She travelled with Lorents Pedersen (a friend and neighbor), his wife and two children. Destination Reynolds, N.D, however, there are no records of them there. Lorents' brother, Zacharias Pedersen (or Vogen) left much earlier to America because he sent the tickets to Inger Anna and Lorentz. If anyone has any information on Inger Anna I would love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Inger Lillenes
(San Francisco)
ilillenes@reloaction.com

She married my Great-Grandfather, Peter Anderson, circa 1874 to 1875. Peter & Marie then lived on the farm owned by Peter in Osceola Township in Polk County, WI where their 2 Sons were born - Gilbert O. in 1877 & George William [my paternal Grandfather] in 1880. I am looking for the Place of Birth of Marie Knutson (or Knudson) plus the Date she migrated to the USA. I am also looking for the names of Marie's parents plus any siblings she may have had.

I'm looking for my Grandmother's family. She was Matilda "Petra" Carlson born 2 Sept 1876. The only info I have from her childhood is a school autograph book from Cleveland School in St Paul MN dated 1888-1890, and her address then: 888 Jessemine St. Most entries are either Norwegian or Swedish, some signatures are from Bergen, Norwaii. The entry from her mother is Norwegian. She married my grandfather: Harry Grant Slater in Seattle in 1896. They lived in Douglas Alaska for 10 years, then moved to Longmont Colorado where she died in 1915. Any help would be much appreciated.

Viking history/Family heritage.

Dear Tveit Family Member,
As a decendant of your family tree I have some yearning questions that I must ask. At what point in time did the Tveits (Thwaits) migrate from the homeland into England, and did they go anywhere else (Europe)? Were they indeed the Vikings that terrorized the English countryside or were they there in England a lot earlier? What caused the families to migrate and why did they leave the homeland (Norway, Denmark)? These are some questions that maybe from your perspective can answer and have more information on.
What is your family story and where did they come from (Tveit). I would like to hear and see the common thread that runs between our families.

Sincerely,

Tom Thweatt

Thorsen Brothers from Kongsberg

My maternal Grandfather, Peder Thorsen, & his younger Brother Ingulf (or Engulf) migrated from Norway & arrived in the USA on March 26, 1891. Their Norwegian patronym got changed to Tovsen by an immigration officer when they arrived because Peder nor Ingulf could speak English very well. Both Thorsen Brothers were born in Kongsberg, Norway. There father was married more than once & they had at least 1 half Brother. Peder was born on Dec. 30 circa 1872 to 1874 & Ingulf was 4 years younger than Peder. They may have traveled with 2 older adult escorts, 1 (Oliver Ruud) who was 2 years older than Peder & the other one was 5 years older than Peder. I am looking for the name of the ship on which Peder & Ingulf sailed to the USA plus the names of Peder & Ingulf's parents (1 of my Uncles seemed to think that the surname of their mother was Duckey).

Nels Severson & Anna Margret Pederson

My Great-Grandparents, Nels Severson & Anna Margret Pederson were married in Norway, then migrated to the USA as a wedding journey in 1880 or 1881. Anna Margret Pederson (d/o Peder Sjursen) was born in May of 1856 or 1857 in Hardanger, Norway. Nels Severson was born in Feb of 1859 or 1860 in Norway. After arriving in the USA, Nels & Anna lived in Martel, WI for a few years where 1 or 2 of their children were born, then moved to Lakeland, MN where their Son, Iver Andrew, was born on Dec. 30, 1884, then moved to Hudson, WI in 1886 where the rest of their children were born. Nels was a carpenter. Nels had a Sister, Mrs. John Moline, whose first name may have been Mary. I'm looking for the Date of their migration, the name of the ship on which they sailed to the USA, & Nels' Place of Birth & the names of his parents.

I would like to know which place in Norway to contact to have a birth certificate copy, sent to me by mail.
The particular birth I am seeking, is my great grandfather's. He was born in Buskerud, Modum, Svendbye Heggen, Norway.
He was born in 1820.
Can someone tell me who to write to to have it looked up and mailed to me?
Also, how much should I send to cover the cost? Thanks, Jim Bjorklund.

Need Help with Norwegian Names

I am searching for the birthplace of my Norwegian great-grandparents, Thomas and Christina (Johnson) Swanson. I'm having difficulty because their names appear to have been anglicized, and I do not know their real Norwegian names. I have tried the name Svendsen in the Norwegian Census, emigration lists, and seamans rolls, but without success (ages, etc,. do not match). Can anyone suggest Norwegian variants for their first and last names?

Thomas Swanson was born between 1864 and 1866 in southern Norway, worked as a seaman, and emigrated to Jefferson County, Pennsylvania in 1892. Christina Johnson Swanson was born in Norway in 1867. She emigrated to the U.S. in 1894 with their sons, Andrew and George. The 1900 U.S. Census lists my great-grandfather as "Tom A." Swanson. We were not aware that he had a middle name, but that is possible. It might also be the census-taker's attempt to spell his name phonetically.

I have my great-grandmother's name and four succeeding generations of first-born males in my family are named for Thomas, so we are anxious to find more information about their Norwegian roots!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Christina Swanson Flynn
