Much of the northern half of Scotland is referred to as the Highlands, because it is a mountainous region..
Many Scots who went overseas to Australia, USA, Canada or New Zealand were from the Highlands...

However, it is possible that other countries have a region of mountainous countryside that they also call the highlands.
