Immigration Port? -- PICKUS / LEVINE / LEIBOWITZ

For my grandmother (Rose Pickus) I was only able to find a census list from the 1920 Census showing the year of immigration as 1906 and place of birth as Russia. For my grandfather (Harry Levine) the 1930 Census shows year of immigration as 1910...both are from Russia. (The two of them met here in the U.S.)

I have no idea which port they would have come in and with the huge number of immigrants from Russia at that time I'm pretty much at a dead end.

The same is the case on my fathers side. the 1930 census shows grandfather "Morris Leibowitz" as immigrated in 1900 - his age in 1930 was 47 so he came as a 17 year old - also from Russia.

My Grandfather Chaim Viskin (Vishkin)

My mother was Sarah Vishkin later married and became Sarah Miller. Her mother, my grandmother was Annie Vishkin (Viskin). My mother said her father died when she was 2 years old and was born 1903 in East London. I have searched all Jewish burial records, but without success. I vaguely heard over the years Chaim Vishkin went to America, and in fact did not die. If he did immigrate, it would have been around 1904-1906 from London. Chaim was a Presser in the tailoring trade. He may not even have gone to America but some other country, but I am given to understand, he went to America.

Any information would be more than helpful and welcomed.

Coral Cohen (nee Miller)

Can anyone point me in the right direction in finding Ivan Alexander Volkov (b. 1912) and his wife Nadjeda Volkov (b.1920) in the immigration records. They came to the US about 1957 or 58 with about 6 kids and settled in California. I did a normal search of immigration records through ancestry.com but could not find anything. Does anyone have any other suggestions.

Hi,

My great-grandfather (Nathan Needle, hebrew Nachem Nodl) came from Russia - Ukraine around 1915. He claimed to have come from a place called Dombrovitz, which was a Jewish community with around 1,000 Jewish families. However, I cannot find anything about it on the internet - it seems like it only exists in the mind of my family! I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Dombrovitz, and if they could please leave some information for me.

What section or town would I look for to find information?

Is there also a town in what is now Ukraine?

Thank you so much - I am really stuck on this one.

Linda In NC

Hello,

I'm searching for any SAVCHENKOs living in southern Michigan or northern Ohio who may be descendants of Kuzma SAVCHENKO.

Kuzma Ageavich(?-spelling) Savchenko emigrated to America about 1914-1915, and worked at the Ford auto plant. Kuzma was born abt 1880 in Belarus or Ukraine and would have been about 34 yrs old when he immigrated.

He left family behind in Belarus and sent money home regularly, but after the 1918 revolution was afraid to go back home. He remarried in America and had children. He was my son-in-law's great grandfather and my s-i-l and his father (who is now in America) would like to meet Kuzma's descendants.

Thanks!
Marilyn

Finding Immigration Port -- Where Do You Begin?

I wasn't able to find much info on ancestry.com because it looks like it stops with immigration. both my mom & dad's parents are listed in the U.S. Census of 1930 as Russian origin. There are no records on the Ellis Island site. I have no idea what port they came to America in, it may not have been Ellis Island. And I have no idea what port they may have departed from in Europe. Where do I go from here? I don't even know a city in Russia. The years of their immigration were 1906, 1908, and 1910 and they were under 25 at the time.

He had 13 brothers and sisters and while most of them came over to the US also we believe one stayed in Russia and one went to North Africa. His fathers name was David Broder and mother was Golda Shefman then married was Golda Broder. He was born in Haredok, Minsk, Russia. He was born around 1896. He traveled with a good friend called Sam stitinski. My grandfather also could have been known as Leib not Louis and Brody instead of Broder.

If any one has any information on the towns he was born or lived in to find family records I would love their assistance.
I am looking for any help/info in my search for my daughters birthfathers side of the family. I know her birth father's name and b-day as well as her grandpa James Andrew Waroff dob 9-22-1935 dod 12-28-1999, his dad was Andrew A Waroff 6-16-1927 (deceased), his dad was Andrew Waroff dob 8-25-1903 Russia dod 6-27-1979 married to Mary F Samarin Waroff dob 4-15-1903 in Russia dod 4-?-1971. Andrew and Mary had other children: Peter in 1923, Fred in 1924 (deceased), I think there were a few more later but I'm not certain. Andrew 1903 was son of Peter Waroff 1869 born in Russia dod 1974 and Agnes Dolmatoff Waroff dob 1-1-1871 in Russia dod 12-6-1940. They were actually from Batume Georgia. They had other children besides Andrew and they are: William in 1891, Anna in 1905, Vera in 1907, Paul in 1910, and Mitchel in 1913 (the only child born in the US). I have a bit of info about William and his wife and kids as well as about Paul's but nothing beyond that. If anyone knows anything or would point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Need help finding a Russian name that was "Americanized"

I'm trying to find out the true name of my Germain Gearson. He was born in Russia in 1853 and came to the United States in the 1880s. The last census I have for him (1910) indicated that he was not a naturalized citizen. His father was born in Russia, too, and his mother was born in Poland.

I understand that the names Germain and Gearson are not of Russian origin. Can anyone help me determine what the names might have been in Russian? (Or possibly Polish?)

As a teenager, my Grandfather came to Canada from German-Russia. The family sailed from Libau to Liverpool. Enroute the two youngest children died from measles. On the manifest of the ship (Campania) they were supposed to take leaving Liverpool, June 04, 1904 for NY, all nine members have their surname spelled correctly BUKOWSKY. Due to the deaths, they didn't take that ship. They are then listed on the Ivernia to Boston leaving July 19, 1904. They didn't make that ship either due to the death of one more child. Here the surname is BukEwsky. One death in Liverpool is listed as Bukowsky, the other as BOGASKY. I've tried every name spelling I can imagine;I cannot find the ship they eventually took. Can anyone help? They were in Canada by mid August.
Florence

I also feel that Chava's parents also came about the same time Aaron ZATULOVSKY or ZATULOVE ( born abt 1818 ) & Bella ZATULOVSKY. Bella Zatulovsky died abt 1890 in New York. Phillip SLOBODIEN was born about 1861 & Chava " Eva " SLOBODIEN was born about 1866. I would appreciate any help I can on this. Thank You Nicki Osborne

My great grandparents all came from Russia in the early 1900's, through Ellis Island and settled in New Jersey. I've had no luck finding them on the Ellis Island website as yet. My ggrandfather was Hyman (Chaim) Kritzman, changed from something like Kritchker. He was an orphan. His wife was Gussie (Gitel) Holstein (may have been Goldstein), and she had a sister Bronna, who settled in New York, and a brother and sister, Rose and Louis, who were twins, and who went to Argentina. Hyman and Gussie were members of a group called the Chudnova KUV.

My other ggrandfather was Bernhard Gilman (originally Hellman), from somewhere in Russia. He was active in the Workman's Circle.

I'd appreciate any information.
Thanks,
Gillian Culff

They did settle in Philadelphia, that is where Bessie had family. I couldn't find them on Ellis Island, tried every way of seaching.
There are a number of Zaehrings which show up on the Russians to America 1850-1896" list--Gustav, Augusta, Emilie and Oswald for instance. At least one of these arrived in Baltimore in the 1870s. Can anyone provide the details of these immigrants and whatever information puts them on the list, since "Zaehring" is a german surname. I have researched all the Zaehrings (with that spelling) in this country and connected them to our family tree, but these aren't connecting and there is no subsequent information about what happened to them.
Russian/Polish variations of the first name "LOTTIE"

I am searching for my Great Great Grandmother who came to America on a ship in 1901....according to my Grandmother, she came alone at 14 from Poland. However, I have not found her on any ship records that I have searched through.
I am wondering if she used a different name or identity....
Her name at the time was Lottie Marlinga, again, according to my Grandmother. In my search, I have found various spellings of her last name, but no matches for her first name.
I am curious if there is a Polish/Russian word for "Lottie" or variation of the name. I have hit a brick wall with her! Anyone with any ideas, please post or email me, thanks so much and have a great holiday season!

They live in the United States.

Herta Trunova was last seen in 1945 in Berlin, Germany. Her family was living in Berlin, Germany when she disappeared.
Hi there!

I'm looking for information on the Sacuta family. It appears that several Sacutas emmigrated from Russia to the Northeastern portion of the US around the turn of the century. My g-g-grandmother, Katie Petrie, apparently married one of them.

Katie (Petrie) SACUTA is listed as having lived in Baltic, CT, in March, 1939. That's the year one of her sons died, and that info was found in his obituary.

I would appreciate ANY information or leads regarding the SACUTA family in the US, and specifically the role KATIE might have played in it.

Thanks so much!
Bonnie
