I am researching the Maxwell line of David B:1662, Gershom B: 1692, John B: 1722, Sanuel B: 1760, Joshua B: 1785, David B: 1816, Frank Rollins B: 1863, Donald Sr. B: 1901, Donald Jr. B: 1939. I don't understand about Alexander Maxwell that was deported after the Battle of Dunbar and the one named Alexander Maxie in Wenham that married Marah Abbe that keep getting put together in ancestry.com. If you have anything that would enlighten me. did both men have a son named David in 1662. I feel certain that the line I listed above it correct to David but am stumped with confusion there. Please anyone that can help contact me.

There is a record of an Alexander (Maxie) Maxwell coming in 1650, as a prisoner from the Battle of Dunbar. However, that Alexander Maxwell settled in York. This one lived in Wenham, MA and married Marah Mary Abbe. Parents of David Maxwell b.1662. Does anyone know when Alexander came to Massachusetts?

Its not actually that expensive when you consider how much it would be to buy a hard copy fo the records.

The secret is to plan what you are going to do first so you don't waste any credits. If you have Ancestry then have a look for him on the census first and see if you can narrow down his dates. If you have his marriage cert that should at least tell you his age and father's name etc.

Have fun!

Hi,

I located my paternal great granparent's marriage registration. They were John Clarke and Mary (Harold). The marriage registration identifies John parents as Patrick Clarke and Ann (Hendraty). Patrick and Ann were born in either Scotland or Ireland. I thought the unusual surname would help me locate their marriage certificate. However, I cannot find anyone with the surname Hendraty.

I've run out of ideas. Anyone familiar with this surname?

Thanks!

Jim

I’d take the stories of the clearances with a pinch of salt. There certainly were people cleared off the lands but the vast majority left of their own accord for the usual economic reasons. Most clan chiefs regarded the steady drain of their people choosing to emigrate as an incalculable loss and some went bankrupt trying to keep them on the land.

The bloodcurdling stories of ruthless Highland chiefs forcing families out of cottages and emptying the glens are grossly exaggerated and has led to a lazy and emotional version of Scottish history. The population of the crofting counties of the Highlands actually rose from 337,000 in 1755 to 382,000 in 1801, during the period when the worst of the clearances are said to have happened. This population increase was an important factor in people’s decisions to emigrate. The land, much of it of poor quality, simply could not support a significant increase in population.

Wild Scots: Four Hundred Years of Highland History, by Michael Fry is a good read for anyone interested in the subject.
I guess you are aware of the "rising' in 1745 for Bonnie Prince Charlie, which ended about 1746. Afterward there were many Scots sent to various locales around the world to purge the rebels. This was the time when even clan tartans were outlawed.

This was also during the end-period of the highland clearances when clan members were ejected from ancestoral homelands by clan chiefs so they could use the land to raise sheep. The conditions for the ejected clan members was appalling as they had no means of support, and famine conditions existed for many.

John McHaffie, in Gargerie (homeplace), was banished at Wigtown October 1684, Covenanter Presbyterian, has thousands of descendants in northeastern United States, migration trails through Appalachia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, and westward, charted at WorldConnect. I compiled Covenanter Martyrs and Transportees, copyright 1998, cd-rom and e-book due to size, and began in 1987. I included much about events in Scotland. I really need help with New Jersey 17th century about John.

My ancestors Joseph & Isabella (Fraser) Stewart were married Nov 30, 1840 in Old Machar, Aberdeen. They came to Canada in 1841 and settled in Port Dover, Norfolk County, Ontario. Port Dover is on Lake Erie of the Great Lakes. Their 1st child was born Feb. 4, 1842 in the Port Dover area and baptised at St John's Anglican Church, Feb. 1842.
Does anyone have knowledge as to how the ship(s) could make it into Lake Erie since the railway did not exist. Did they come into New York via the Erie Canal then into the Lake? Are there ships lists in Aberdeen for 1841?

www.familysearch.org has records extracted from church records (all churches) and also submissions from LDS church members.

The extractions (which form part of the International Genealogical Index or IGI) are just an Index and are not complete - so just because something is not on IGI doesn't mean it didn't happen!

Also the IGI is excellent for certain periods - eg Scotland to 1875 - but poor for later times.

Also some churches did not allow their records to be filmed and put on IGI because of their views on the LDS church

HTH

Fiona

Hello Jeannette, I have found myself in the same boat (so to speak..!) where a great aunt left scotland in Nov 1930 and arrived in New York. I also have the address that she was to be staying at and the name of the friend, but have not been able to find out anything else about her. Any tips or suggestions that you have would be greatfully received. Kind regards Alison

Hello,
I am trying to find out exatly when, where my ancestors came to America from Scotlands. We know they came from Scotland but can not find out where in Scotland. There was 4 brothers we think came after 1760 but before 1775. We have found military records of where they were in the Revolutionary war. Their names were Thomas, Adam, Alexander and George Anderson. They were indentured servants and settled in around the Somerset, Beaver and Westmoreland counties. I am the 9th generation of George. Thank you,
Susan

I am trying to trace my ggggrandfather. On census records and christening records for his children, he wrote that he came from Scotland. Unclear if he came to the US via New Brunswick, Canada. Married Sarah S. Hickey from St. George N.B. Canada @ 1816 and had several children: Thomas, Elizabeth, George, James and Robert. My records show them living in Washington County, Maine. Family lore says he changed his name when he got to the US, calling himself Robinson. There is nothing to back that up that I can find. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

this is true. i didn't think of it that way. i just knew that around the time that this "rash" of child murders took place that there was a lot of political upheaval. and i guess i was taking for granted that it had something to do with that....i'll keep checking on that angle just to be sure...it doesn't really have anything to do with my own family research, but i just got interested in it by accident really and thought i'd research a bit more...
but i will keep your scenario in mind too....because i'm sure that at least some of those murders could have been due to illegitimacy.
thanx for the help,
mel

"Scots Banished to the American Plantations (1650-1775)"

i was recently leafing through a book titled "Scots Banished to the American Plantations (1650-1775)"

i wrote down most of the women and their crimes that i came across...i had a list of about 71 of them (again, i didn't write down all of them, most of them though)...

out of the 71 women i do have, 54 were child murderers...and in the year of 1749 there were 6 murders by women, 5 of them against children...

while this isn't something to be happy about, the research i have done states that in most of these case (the 54 in particular) that there was major strife sweeping scotland during many of these years (there were cases of famine conditions, religious and economical issues, etc)...and in times of famine for instance, rather than watch their child starve to death the woman would put the child out of misery....(of course i know this doesn't explain every single case, but it does cover some of them).

my question is: what was going on in 1749? for 5 out of 6 murders that were commited by women to have been against children, there had to be something really bad to happen, and yet i have had trouble figuring it out myself...i haven't spent so very long researching it, and that may be my problem...perhaps, i've found the info and not really known what i was looking at...

but i was just wondering what in the world would have or could have happened to make so many women just loose it....
it doesn't have anything to do with any direct genealogy that i've been doing, i got sidetracked, and became interested in finding an answer if there is one...

thank you to anyone that can offer any help.

There is a factor you have ignored - illegitimacy.
An unmarried woman with a child was effectively out of the marriage market, and so a woman no longer with a child had a better chance of getting a husband: this in a time with no social security, not even the harsh poor law which would at least provide some essentials.
Looking at many civil registration certificates (1855 onwards for Scotland), it is amazing how many infants of unmarried woman die in infancy. One might put some of it down to the difficulties of caring for a baby and trying to work at the same time, but I suspect some of it can be put down to the baby being unwanted, especially when the new mother discovered what a problem it was.
In earlier times, everyone seemed to know what everyone was up to, and there was little sympathy for women in such a position, and if there was any doubt..... Just think of the cot death babies of recent years, and how many women were accused of murdering them.It took years of research to take away these accusations.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, social, religious and legal pressure took its toll on these women, just as it did for those accused of witchcraft.
Gordon.
They had one son, my husband's grandfather, Leland Abner Robinson - born in Niles, Michigan. Leland married in Illinois, moved to Alabama and died there. My guess is to start my search with Leland in Michigan census to try to find his parents names and where they originated from. Can any of you offer further suggestions? I'm new at this. Thanks. Records leading us to info on Charles may have been destroyed by fire during the Civil War. Mom says the plantation was, also, destroyed.
