Somewhere in Kent, United Kingdom?????

Hi. Looking for help on whether anyone knows of a Poorhouse, Sanatorium or anything in Kent round about 1922 give or take a couple of years. My mother once told me she was "in this horrible place in Kent that was run by Nuns and that they were ****** sadistic and she hated it there". However, she never said how long she was there or why and I stupidly never asked. Now I have no one left to ask. I know she was supposedly in a Sanatorium for TB when she was "young", and I am guessing same time, in St. Albans. Could these be one and the same? She always mentioned them separately to me. She lived in Westminster, and am pretty sure her parents were not married and my aunt was six years older and went into service at age 14, when my mother would have been Aabout 8.This would have been 1924. Thus my confusion. I know she lived in the Old Pye Street, Strutton Ground area of Westminster, London and was born in that area as was my aunt. She said her dad died when she was 3 but I take that with a pinch of salt. However I did find someone of the same name who died in 1921 (close as she was born Dec 1916) so that could be true.I am really confused on this one and if there is anyone who knows of somewhere in Kent she could have been sent (mother unable to cope etc?) or St.Albans re sanatorium would be grateful. Her name was Emily Dorothy Noakes, her mother was Louisa Frances Noakes and her father ??? George Noakes?. With many thanks.

I'm a reporter for USA TODAY, and I'm working on a story about poor farms (sometimes called poor homes or county homes) and the value they and their cemeteries have to people researching genealogy.
If you found an ancestor who lived at or was buried at a poor farm anywhere in the U.S., I'd love to hear from you - especially if you're willing to be interviewed on the record.
thanks!
Judy Keen

I see at the LMA they have birth records for 1866 onwards for the Marylebone workhouse.

I am looking for a birth for Alexander Long circa 1847 (by age on 1851 census) in the workhouse. This birth appears not to have been registered in the civil registration records (or is not easily found).

Does anyone know where I might find birth records for the workhouse at this time?

Almshouse/Poorhouse located in Orangeville and plan to continue with other years as time permits.

I have also transcribed the Genesee Co., Almshouse/ Poorhouse located in Bethany for several census years.

I will answer emails seeking information about an individual(s) if subject of email states "Genesee or Wyoming Co. His name has been spelt differently, he may have served in the 82nd airborne division, not 100% sure.

This is all the information I have, and would appreciate any help please.

Regards

Janice

William Thomas JONES

William Thomas JONES (Jr) - Gloucestershire, England - is my gr-gr-grandfather – born sometime between 1850-1852 with the EXACT name as his father. Nothing is known of his mother’s name or family line. I DID discover actual information on him for a short 12 yr period 1871-1883, but BEFORE and AFTER these years, remains a total mystery to me. I am at the BRICK WALL stage now, and frustrated - Any help whatsoever would be much appreciated.

MARRIAGE - 10 Oct 1871 to Ellen Matilda BEACH in Parish church, Bedminster.
Age: 21 (therefore est birth to be 1850)
Occupation: Postman.
Residence: Brown’s Row, ?city/village?.
His father: William Thomas JONES – occupation: Printer, at the time of son’s wedding.

CENSUS of 1881 lists him born in Bristol, Gloucestershire
Age: 29 (therefore est birth abt 1852)
Residence: Jacobs Wells, Barton Regis, Clifton, Gloucestershire, with wife Ellen M. and his four daughters, Mabel E., Elizabeth, Eliza Rose, and Elsie.
Occupation: Wheelchair man (probably because daughter Elizabeth was crippled).

DEATH of his wife Ellen Matilda (BEACH) JONES on 13 June 1883:
William Thomas JONES was the informant.
Residence: 6 Oxford Court, Oxford St, Kingsdown, Bristol, U.S.D.(whatever that means?)
Occupation: Wheelchair man.

Spring 1884 (only 9 months after his wife died) he was listed as 'drunkard' and all 4 daughters were received into orphanages (3 in Bristol Home & Bessie(Elizabeth) into a Cripples Home in Clifton). Elsie and Rose were shipped to Canada in May 1884.

Daily, I search….When/where was he actually born ? Who was his mother, so I can trace that side ? When/where did his parents die? Where did daughters Mabel E and Bessie(Elizabeth) go? Where did he disappear to, after his wife’s death in 1883 ?

Thank you so much, in advance. I appreciate it immensely.

Kimmer
Therefore if she is the same she certainly had her early years in Liverpool
How could I follow this up, any ideas?

Cumberland County Illinois Poor Farm AKA "Old Folks Home"

I know that early Poor Farm records were lost in a fire in 1885 in Cumberland Co., IL, but the Poor House had residents until after 1910. My gr gr grandmother was a resident there being admitted on July 14, 1879 being blind and old (she was 49) and she lived there until she died on 18Apr, 1910. At that time there were 8 residents living there.
Please, does anyone know of any records, or where I might find records? There has to be something somewhere doesn't there?
Thanks in advance,
Barb King

I am looking for any information concerning Charles Gabriel, born sometime around 1890-1894, who was transferred from Edmonton Union workhouse to Hornchurch Cottage homes in 1894. There exists apparently for the Edmonton Workhouse a list of paupers (1879-1930), of births (1886-1895) and of creed registers (1876, 1881-1938). Should anyone have access to any of these, could you please check to see if a Charles Gabriel is listed? Thank you very much.

His mother and himself are not listed in any records as being buried there.

I am interested in any descendants of the Boone Co. Poor Farm/asylum in Iowa.

My GGG Grandfather, Joseph Craig, died in 1894, in the asylum fire.

I have an ancestor living in the workhouse in Norwich Norfolk. The father and 12 yr old son are there. It appears that the mother is working as a schoolmistress and boarding out. Another grown son works nearby as a shopkeeper and a grown daughter as a housemaid. The 12yr old is listed as a scholar, the father as "inmate". By the next census the father is gone the young son is living with his widowed mother and widowed older sister.
Can anyone give a possible explanation for the family situation?

I have been looking for information on the home I work at for quite some time. It is now called Greenville Acres Adult Foster Care Home but from what I have heard it has had a few names. I know that it used to be called Montcalm County Poor Farm and was running in the mid 1800's. Sometime near the turn of the century there was a fire that destroyed most of the farm but it was soon rebuilt. It used to be an infirmary where they kept the unruly and a storage for war supplies such as wool blankets and plasma. This is only a tiny fraction of what I need to know so if you have any information.... I put this under graveyards because there is a Potter's Field directly across the road where people that died in the home were buried. The home is located on County Farm rd in Greenville Mi.
Thanks...
Flea

I would like to find the names of the poor houses in the 4 corners region of MO, AR, OK and KS especially the ones that admitted those suffering from diseases from the mining of Zinc and Lead and if those institutions had their own cemeteries and where those cemetery records might be located. This would have been back in the 1880's and 90's jackee@sktc.net
