James DeWitt of Carter Co. KY

Another Wife Killer

James DEWITT, of Carter county, is under arrest for killing his wife some time since. They had separated and he had tried to get a divorce. The process of the courts was a little too slow for DEWITT and he concluded to become a widower by making way with his better half. James is now in jail and a mob is wanting to hang him for his crime. He got the divorce by murder, but the fellow will not be apt to ever marry again, that is, in this world.
Mullins Family Feud

My family(on my Mothers side) were from Conway & Wildie & I was born in Richmond 1936. When I was about 10yrs old we were talking about the Hatfield & McCoy battle & my G/father,Clell Mullins started to tell me about a feud between the Mullins clan and another family but G/maw shut him up,said we should'nt hear about such things. I have tried to find out if there was such an event but have been unable to dig anything up so far! Has anyone read of any feuds around Wildie,BrushCreek or Conway? If so I shure would be interested in hearing about it !

Hi there DMB...I was looking at your post and noticed you are looking for the name Mahoney. I have an Edward Mahoney in my family from St. Thomas born about 1901. He married Frances Grant I think between 1917-1918 in NY. Yet to find marriage records though. Since she was born in NY I figured she got married in NY. I don't know who his parents are but I was jusr wondering if you had an Edward in your records residing in NY born in St. Thomas?

Leslie

Looking for any information on the murder of Alonzo McClellan. Belive this took place in 1898 in Barren County, Kentucky. My cousin Bertha Coatney was present and I believe wounded when this murder took place. As I understand the story Robert Brown who was married to a daughter of Alonzo McClellan raped his wife's sister another daughter of Alonzo. A short time later he came calling to see this young girl again and Alonzo told him no. Robert Brown did not like that answer so he killed Alonzo. I would like to learn more about this.
Disappearance of Thomas B. Hudson

I am trying to solve a family mystery about the sudden disappearance of Thomas B. Hudson. Last known information is recorded in the 1870 census for Clinton Cty. Listed are his wife, Charity (Wright) and their 3 children, Martha A., John F. and Ballenger. After this census, Thomas disappears, she and the children then return to live with her father Ballenger Wright and mother Susanna (Pierce) as recorded in the 1880 census of Pulaski Cty. On that census a fourth child is known, Ambrose Hudson. Charity then assumes her maiden name and her four children also take their mothers name of Wright. John Francis enlists in the US Army in 1898 and presents himself as John Francis Wright.

I have conflicting dates and conflicting information about the spelling of Charity Wright Hudson.

Any information to enlighten this family mystery would be appreciated.

David A. or Angela S. Wright
Mullins and Haley feud in Rockcastle Co KY

Is it possible that with the feud that was started between the Mullins and Haleys at Big Springs Cave in 1859, that it resulted in Edward Slaughter being 'killed by a feuding neighbor' in 1865?
Edward was related to the Haleys and lived close to some of those in the feud. I also believe that Edward's son, also named Edward, was killed in 1865 in Madison Co. All the Slaughters left Madison and Rockcastle and moved to Marion Co. KY before the 1870 census.
I have the booklet, "The Fight at the Big Springs Cave in Rockastle County, Kentucky" (An Investigation of the Haley Murder Trials 1859-1866) that can be obtained on the Rockcastle Co. website, or I'd be glad to look up info.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Taylor-Lee Feud of Harlan County

Has anyone heard of the Taylor-Lee Feud of Harlan County?

Here are two newspaper articles that Randy Jackson has found using Newspaper Archives in regards to the Taylor-Lee Feud, however I would really like to know who Tom Messer was:

Article dated 9 June 1899
Middlesboro Ky,Abe Lee a member of the Lee faction of the Lee-Taylor feud, which raged in ,Harlan Co ten years ago,was killed from ambush. It is thought the Taylors did the deed, and the Lee faction are arming. The old feud will be revived,9 June 1899 Portsmouth Times

Article dated 13 June 1899
Another chapter of crime has been added to the Taylor-Lee feud. Tom Messer, one of the Lee faction, was shot down near his home by unknown parties. This is the second murder within two weeks in connection with the feud between the Taylor and Lee families.

If you are recieving this on the mailing list I do NOT belong to the list, please e-mail me at foe3643@tombstonezero.net if you can help identify these families.

Thank you so much,
Cassy Sommers

I was just wondering if anyone else has heard about this story, or if anyone would like to know more. I can ask him to tell me the details.
Jess

A new book is now available through Xlibris on the 1885 Jones-Wright Feud. This is the first historical account of that feud ever written and it is extensively documented. Several well-known characters took part in this feud. Among them were: Bad John Wright, Clabe Jones, Dolph Draughan and Talton Hall.
This book has many documents, letters and newspaper articles that have not been seen in over one hundred years.
Various murders are covered in detail. Some of these are: the murders of Henry Vanover, Uriah Bates, Ira Mullins, Linville Higgins, Andy Hall, Frank Salyers, Ben Cunningham, Dolph Draughan, Jay Draughan and several others.
The following link will take you directly to the Xlibris site featuring this new book.

http://xlibris.com/bookstore/bookdisplay.asp?bookid=33014

This information was given us by Mr. John Stegall regarding family members who were involved with the Elliott County Regulators.
I am seeking info on the following men:
Fulton H. FRALEY
G. W. C. FRALEY
Rufus FRALEY
Samuel FRALEY
Fred GILLEM
Jesse GILLEM
Joseph GILLEM
Pleasant GILLEM
William GILLEM, Sr.
William GILLEM, Jr.
Peter SMITH-my Great Great Grandfather.
From my own family files:
On Sept. 26, 1863 "The Cooks" "a pro-Southern group robbed the bank is Ashland, KY. For this deed Adam C. FRALEY and Marcus G. FRALEY were taken Prisoners." End Quotes. I believe the leader of the Cooks was Anderson "Devil" Cook-someone down home told me this.
Regulators also from Notes in the Elliott County Library:
Formed in the Autumn of 1879 their Anon spokesman was "Judge Lynch"who declared "law would be brought to all law-breakers".
From the Lexington Gazetter May 29, 1880 in regards to the Regulators:
"a struggle between the very best men of the mountain counites and outlaws."
End Quote.
Ramona
John Garrison`s body still lays on top of The Big Black Mountain alone side of His son Isaac and Conner McKnight.
There was a feude between Richard Pearl Morris (1810-1864) and John Garrison(1810-1863).
This was Cival War times and Richard was with The South as a soldier.
John sold horses to the North.
These two men being kin were at odds with each other.
Richard was married to John sister Jane Garrison, they lived in The Powell Mountains of VA.
John and his family lived on top of The Big Black Mountain at a place called The Rock House.
These two families werent that far from each other if you traveled the mountain tops and they did.
Of course this ired Richard, John selling horses to the North.
So as night began to fall Richard and his company rode up.
John not having any fear of his brother inlaw walked out of the barn as Richard called to him.
Richard shot John dead and took his horses for the South.
Richard died about a year after this.
There is rumors that he was hanged in a place called Blackwater, Va.
Some say he was chased by the Northern renegades and killed.
If He was killed by John Garrison`s family no one will tell.
Guess its more honerable to die at the hand of the enemy than be called a murderer.
If any one else has any information this !
Carol <lola@setel.com>

Killing in Harlan Co.

Wow just happen onto this board. Wondering why so many fueds in Kentucky?
Anyway, must be something to it, because my grandfather, Robert B. (Bob) Turner, killed a man in, believe Cumberland City Harlan Co., between 1920 and 1930.
He worked in mines, had moved from Tenn. after 1920, with his wife and most of their eleven children.
Seems he thought my grandmother was fooling around with a man, not sure of his name, was told it was John Barnes or Wig Hughes. This all passed down to me, he killed the man, was arrested and escaped, hid out for some time in the swamps of southern Georgia, he was born in Georgia.
In the mean time, the KKK came to my grandmothers house, burned it down.Don't understand that, unless this man was a member of the KKK, we're all Irish. She eventually came to Texas, with one of her grown daugthers, and all the kids they could fit in her car.
My Uncle told me, he had to come later, on his own.
The story goes, the way they got the money to come to Texas, is two men got in a fight, one stabbed the other, the one that got stabbed, had some money hid in a sock, and either my grandmother or my Aunt found it.
I know this sounds crazy, been trying to figure the whole thing out, espically some kind of proof, to my grandfathers killing that man.
He later came to Texas, early 1930's, but my grandmother didn't want him in the house, so his grown sons sent him away on the bus. Where I don't know. He was always refered to as Bob Woody, not his real name, by his kids. Their all dead now, so the mystery is just that.
If anybody sees anything familiar here please email me, ljturner@ev1.net
Know its a long shot, but I'm trying. Kentucky must have been like the wild west!

Does anyone know anything about the Moore/Nowlin family who lived in Letcher County, KY? Specifically Charles Moore married to Nancy Jane Williams. I haven't been able to find anything on these people - my great-grandparents. Apparently something happened and there's a question about the last name, whether it's Nowlin or Moore. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Edward Slaughter-Shot May 1865 Rockcastle Co. KY

Edward Slaughter was shot and killed by a feuding neighbor, May 1865, in Rockcastle Co KY. The neighbor threatened to kill all members of his family. Several months earlier, his son, Green Slaughter, was indicted for murdering Absalom Pollard in Garrard Co. Ky. Don't know if this might have been an ongoing thing, related to the war, or what, but would like to find more information.
Thanks for any ideas!

My gg-grandfather, Thomas Tucker, was murdered in Adair Co. about 23 Aug 1853. He was shot in the back deliberately, at a turkey shoot.

The assailant's name is unknown. Family lore has it that he was angry at Thomas, reason unknown, went home for his gun and told his mother that he was going to kill Thomas!

So far, I have not been able to find any record, confirming this murder. Any help with this would be appreciated.

My family as I know it is based on three different branches. That is the Tollivers, the Cooks, and the Sizemores. All three are listed in the Rowan county war and even the names that long ago are the names of my father, my grand mother, my grandfather and my uncle.
They were raised in olive hill in Rowan county.
It actually ended up in a fairy tale ending like Romeo and Juliet without anyone being shot or poisened.
The Cooks and the tollivers finely reconciled when Flora Cook married Andrew Tolliver.
At their trial with Judge Turner, she smuggled a .45 in her apron, killed one of the Sizemore's and shot the other in the face. Does anyone know about this? Voting year when it happened, judge is said to have been a brother to the newspaper editor, so it was kept pretty quiet. Viola was an ancestor, I'd like to learn more.

He was shot and killed by his sister Ruth Hall's brother-in-law Vester Hall. As a young child, I can recall my family talking about this shooting. Ruth Hall was my great grandmother, making Claud my great great uncle. Vester was a brother to William Lestle Hall, my great grandfather. I would love to get to the bottom of this feud and figure out why the shooting happened in the first place.

I am looking for information about a possible shooting.
All the following information is from a story in the family, and facts I've been able to find.

This is a quote from my cousin who lived as a teen with her grandmother;

"Here is how Mammy, (b. 10/15/1871) told us the tale of her dad & the killing. He & another man fought a dual at an election (year unknown). I thought it was a cousin due to she said her Dad Lewis thought his Aunt Martha wouldn't let him view the body. But when he and Mammy (Malva) came up the hill - he was holding or leading Malva by the hand When they got to the gate Aunt Martha told him to come in. The body was lying in the dog trot of the house on saw horses. Perhaps the Aunt was a neighbor but then lots of people where aunt & uncle. One person told me this could be found in court records. I always thought Mammy was a small child by him leading her by the hand."

Lewis is not in Perry census of 1860, 1880, or 1900
I have yet to check 1870. And the Owsley censuses
He is in 1850. He was b. 6/13/1849, d. 6/29/1901 buried Campbell (?) cemetery near Scoville, Owsley county. He was married to Betty Eversole, about 1869.

All leads apreciated

Hugh Laughlin of Bracken Co. KY

Hugh LAUGHLIN, of Bracken county, on last Friday night committed a rape on his wife's niece who was staying with the family. Then to hide the crime, he killed the girl and his wife with a poker, then set fire to the house, cut a gash in his own throat and claimed that robbers had attacked the family and did the work. He is in jail with any angry mob howling on the outside. He deserves nothing at the hands of the people, not even protection from the mob. He has confessed the crime and deserves the severest fate that can befall him. (Source: Madisonville (Ky.) Hustler, Fri., Feb. 21, 1896)
(Source: Phil Brown)
Wakefield & Frone families feud in Northern KY

I was recently at a family get together -- my sister's brother-in-law was talking about his family history and mentioned that he would be interested in finding out more information about the family fued between the Wakefield family and the Frone (I think that this is the correct spelling!?!?!) somewhere in northern Kentucky. He has SO LITTLE information, that he was unsure where to even begin. I know that it is a long shot posting a query with so very little to go on, but in the slightest chance that there might be someone out there that might know ANYTHING to point me into the right direction, I thought I would post a query here. Unfortunately, I don't know where in Kentucky, other than the northern part of the state,....and I don't know any specific names, other than the surnames. Let me know if you know anything!! Thanks!

Hardy - Hawkins Feud of Western KY/TN

Does anyone know anything about the Hardy/Hawkins feud of Fulton Co. Ky/Obion Co. TN? I know that it started sometime in the 1890s. From what little I have been able to learn it lasted until 1910 - 1915. There was a member of the Hawkins family killed and two Hardy brothers had to leave TN and went to Arkansas! Some of the people in that area remember their parents talking about the feud in the 1930s - but no specifics!

Judge Adkins' Killing KY

I am seeking verification or otherwise on an interesting story in my wifes genealogy. The story in her family is that her great grandfather was a Judge in the Big Sandy region of Kentucky in May 1892 and he rendered a decision that was unpopular with with the opposing faction. They in turn killed the Judge and supposedly all the male Adkins over a certain age. The judges wife was pregnant with my wifes grandfather and the events of the day caused her to deliver him and die in childbirth the same day as the Judge was killed. My wifes father says that a movie was made about the events but he can't remember the name. What a story!!!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jim Lucas

As the subject line says, I lost an ancestor to a lynching in Pulaski Co, KY in and around 1883. His name was Fielden Shelton. He had a wife by the name of Lucinda (maiden name: Whitis) and two young boys. No one in the family knows what happened. Although they suspect that he was stealing cattle. I would like to know if this is true or what really happened. Any information would be truly helpful and much appreciated. Thank you, D. Shelton.

My great great uncle, Buford Woods said later in life that he left Henry Co.because he was aftaid he would be blamed. Believe it was the murder of a husband of a woman he was involved with.
Mack Mat(t)thews Murdered His Father

This is the story as the family has been told: My great-grandfather, who family knew as Mack Mat(t)hews, murdered his father because his father was beating his wife. Apparently, he shot him with a shotgun while standing over a woodpile. After this occured, it is believed that he fled to Fulton, which my ggandfather lists as his place of birth, before showing up in Memphis on the 1900 census. His listed date of birth is August 2, 1875 and his DOD is August 10, 1943. His father was White and his mother was described as a Black Indian. I am assuming that the murder occurred in the late 1880s or sometime in the 1890s. It is uncertain that Mack Matthews was his real name which has caused some frustration in my research. It is believed he had two full-blooded white sisters in Kansas who were older than he was and a black sister who lived in Memphis, also believed to have been older. If the story of murder sounds at all familiar, even if the surname is not Matthews, please contact me. I have a picture of what he looked like around 1915 if it would help. Thanks

DAVIESS CO KY - PAYNES AND TURNBULLS

I am researching the murder of Ignatius Payne and his son George, by William and George Turnbull. All I have found so far is a story from the History of Daviess Co Ky, Upper Town Precinct, page 797, see below:

A Neighborhood Battle
In the spring of 1852 a difficulty arose between the families of Ignatius Payne and William and George Turnbull, in regard to the building of a fence between the farms. The Turnbulls wanted to join fences, and the Paynes wanted a road between so that stock could pass back and forth. Turnbulls persisted and joined the fences, in spite of all opposition. Payne went out to move the fence, when the Turnbulls came out and commenced an attack, using butcher-knives for weapons. Mr. Payne and his son George were killed, and John, James and Ignatius Payne were badly wounded. The women portion of the family fought as desperately as the men. This affray occurred six miles east of Owensboro, on the Pleasant Valley road, on what is now known as the John A. Payne farm.

I was told that the whole town got involved and took sides, making it necessary to move the Turnbull trial. Maybe Bowling Green, Ky, I just can't remember.

Any information please

Seeking Lawson, Archer family info

the story passed down through the family was that my great-great-grandmother Mary Alice Donaldson Lawson Dennis first
husband, Mr. Lawson, had witnessed a killing. He was warned not to testify,
but felt he had to. He disappeared and was presumed murdered before he could
testify. his disappearance probably took place between 1893 and 1895. Because
next, I find my great-great-grandmother, then in Rowan County, marrying her second husband R. C. Dennis in 1896. They were still in Rowan County in 1900 census,
but in Ashland by 1910.

Also my great-grandfather Dan Archer his dad was soposely killed in the Hatfield and McCoy feud. I have a birth date of Jan 15 1889 for him. Have found a paper were my grandfather says Dan was born in Big Sandy. He lived with some people by the last name Jordan. I have think I have found him the on the 1920 Ashland census, living down the street from his mother-in-law and father-in-law R. C. Dennis. It appears that he is still using the Jordan name. I belive that at this time he wasn't told about his father is the reason for this. He never knew his father at all. I need any info on this please I'm trying to do this from Alabama. One is bad enough but it appears that I have two that were killed in the fueds in kentucky.

Seeking Info on: James W. Kendall-William McMillan aka "Muck"

Elliott County History Book Vol. II "Judge Lynch" ..... by James M.Prichard Page 7
"The arrest of John W. Kendall and William McMillan, better known as Bill Muck, set the stage for tragedy. Kendall, a thirty-nine year old Confederate veteran, belonged to one of the most prominent families in the Little Sandy region. The son of Lewis and Louisa Kendall, he resided with his wife and family in the vicinity of Newfoundland or Crackers Neck.
Kendall's alleged accomplice, the thirty-three year old "Muck", was one of many local men who rode with Sid Cook's and Sam Thompson"s rebel partisans during the war. He was wounded and captured by the same
Union patrol that killed Billy Bumgardner on Bruin Creek in the winter of 1864 (ironically John Kendall's brother, James Amos Kendall, who also rode with Cook, was cornered and killed by Unionists on Newcombe at virtually the same time). "Muck" afterwards married Bumgardner's sister, Lydia, and lived in Rowan County prior to settling near Newfoundland in the 1870's." End Quotes
From the History of Elliott Co. KY--Book II
All help in finding further information on these young men's deaths is appreciated.
Thank You,
Ramona

For those of you who are looking for information, there is a book in most Kentucky libraries called Days of Darkness, The Feuds of Eastern Kentucky. It is written by John Ed Pearce. Excellent book as it covers the names, dates and family names. For example, it has the Turner and Howard feud. The book covers the counties of Harlan,, Breathitt, Pike, Perry, Rowan and Clay.
