Donald McDonell 1777 Fort Stanwix

Little help please . Looking for info on Donald McDonell , who was apparrently a young soldier in the KRRNY during the Revolutionary War . Military records have him being entered into and also discharged from Loyalist forces in August of 1777 . He is said to have died as a result of being wounded at battle of Fort Stanwix in same month 1777 . His widow [name unknown], and young daughter [born 1770] fled to Canada and settled in Charlottenburg Twp following the war. In 1801 and 1818 his daughter Ann / Nancy McDonell applied for and received land grants as the daughter of said Loyalist Donald McDonell who was killed in 1777 . Please check your McDonell Trees , or if you have military histories of this time period , so that this deserving man may be properly acknowledged . Thanks in advance .

Seeking Loyalist Provisioning List for Nova Scotia

In my husband's ancestry, there is a David T. Merrit, b. abt. 1785 who lived in Marlborough, Ulster Co, NY. However, in the NY State census of 1855, he states that he was born in Nova Scotia.
I believe he is descended from the Merritts of Westchester Co, NY. What I'm thinking is that his parents were Loyalists who fled to Nova Scotia, returning to NY shortly after he was born and settling in Ulster Co. among other Westchester Merritts.
I would like to learn whether there are any Merrit(t)s on the Loyalist Provisioning Lists for Nova Scotia who might be this family. Is there anywhere online I can see those lists?

I also have a small wooden box given to her daughter Rebecca that John carved while he was in prison for his part in the 1837 rebellion.

1848 death of Alexander McGruer in Charlottenburgh, a UEL

From the British Colonist of Toronto, of February 8, 1848

DIED: At Charlottenburgh, Upper Canada, on the 10th ult., in the 85th year of his age, Mr. Alexander McGruer, a U.E. Loyalist, and a native of Glendemore, in the Parish of Beleskine, Inverness-shire. He left his native land in 1773, for the then British Colonies and, upon the breakout of the Revolutionary War, although but a stripling, did not hesitate to join the Royal Standard, and, in common with many of his countrymen, cheerfully to endure his share of the hardships and privations to which they were subjected, till they arrived in Canada in 1784. Since that period, he resided in Charlottenburgh, deservedly esteemed for his public and private worth; was a member of, and, for many years past, a faithful and respected elder in the congregation of Williamstown.

I have tried for years to tie my own Glenurquhart-Glenmoriston Mac/McDonalds to those who were on the Pearl in 1773.
In Sept 1775 they left from Ft William on the Ship Glasgow and originally intended to follow the same path and itinerary as those McDonalds’/McDonnells’ from the Ship Pearl Voyage in 1773 to Upstate NY.
Since the family has no known ties to any early Mc/Mac Donald/Donnell families in Nova Scotia or North Carolina, my natural thought process would assume they had family ties to those who had already gone before them to the Mohawk Valley area.

Though the past articles on my family identified them as being “Glencoe” MacDonald’s, My own DNA and research says otherwise. The John McDonald identified below was my 4th G-GF. Son Ewen/Evan/Hugh [Eoghan Mor] my 3rd G-GF. All of John McDonald’s 8 children were born in Glenurquhart prior to the family departing in Sept 1775. john was about 52 when he left Glenurquhart.
As a deacon of the Presbterian Church, John's 3rd son James [Bunloit abt 1754] moved from Pictou to Ontario abt 1823 and is buried in Brucefield, Ross, ONT with his wife Mary Forbes. If anyone has any information on family ties, please contact me. Ben MacDonald, Sun City AZ macdonab@cox.net

September 30, 1775
Edinburgh Evening Courant
Extract of a letter from Fort William, Sept. 4.
“We have no news in this country; only yesterday sailed, the ship Jupiter, from Dunstaffuage Bay with about 200 emigrants on board, for North Carolina, mostly from the country of Appin in Argyleshire. Though formerly among the first to take up arms against the reigning family, they now declare their readiness to support government in case they find it necessary on their arrival in America.— This day likewise will sail the ship Glasgow, with emigrants from the port of Fort-William, bound for New York.”

The Ship Glasgow sailed from Fort William Harbour in Sept 1775, retracing the voyage of the Ship Pearl on Sept 1773. Its intended destination was NY Harbour where the passengers on the Ship Glasgow intended to disembark and travel overland to Upstate NY where the Scots from 1773 had already settled. There is a letter from the Fort William Customs people identifying NY as the ships port destination.

As they approached the coast of North America, the Jupiter, Glasgow, and Glasgow Packet part ways and sail for their intended ports. Bad weather forced the Jupiter to port at Wilmington DE and the Glasgow Packet is boarded in Boston by the British. The passengers on the Glasgow Packet were sent on to Halifax where they became part of the 84th Regiment.

Oct 31, 1775 - It is the beginning of the American War. The Ship “Glasgow” arrives off New York City harbour, is boarded and turned away by the ship HMS Asia under the command of Captain George Vandeput. After sitting in the harbour for 30 days, the ships passengers agree to service with the promise of land after the ‘skirmish’. All of the ship Glasgow’s passengers are ‘impressed’ and sent to Halifax on board HMS Asia where they were to be sent on to Fort Edward, Windsor, NS for duty (eventually) as part of the 84th Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment.

In early 1784, a settlement of disbanded soldiers was made further up the East River in Pictou County. They came to Pictou at the close of the American War. They were, originally, from the Highlands of Scotland.
http://www.canadiangenealogy.net/novascotia/pictou_county/ea...
The first who came was James Fraser, Big James, who in company with Donald McKay, elder, settled on the interval a little below where St. Paul's Church now stands. He and fifteen others took up a tract of over three thousand acres, extending up to Samuel Cameron's on the east side of the river, and to James Fraser's, Culloden, on the west side. The names of these first settlers were: Donald Cameron, his brothers Samuel and Finlay, Alexander Cameron, Robert Clark, Peter Grant, first elder in the settlement, James McDonald, Hugh McDonald on the east side of the river. James Fraser, Duncan McDonald, John McDonald, brother of James, John Chisholm, drowned at the Narrows with Finlay Cameron, John McDonald, 2d, John Chisholm, Jr.

John McDonald was born at Glen Urquhart and belonged to the Glencoe McDonalds. At the time of the Glencoe Massacre, 1692, one of the McDonalds fled to Glen Urquhart and settled there. John McDonald was a grandson or great grandson of that man. He was about eight years in the Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, and three of his sons fought with him in the Revolutionary War on the Loyalists' side. [John's 2nd son Alexander was drowned at Sea in Nov 1777.]
John was married twice. By his first wife he had Duncan, Alexander, Mary and Christy. By his second wife, Margaret Grant, he had James, Ewen, Ann and Ellen.
Ann was married to Thomas Fraser, Basin.
Ellen was married to James Robertson. The well known Deacon Robertson, Churchville, was their son.
Duncan, eldest son of John McDonald, was married to Catherine Fraser.
James, their third son, was born about 1759. He was a Corporal in the 84th regiment. He married about 1782, Mary Forbes, by whom he had Alexander, Edward and other sons. He left East River about 1834, and settled in Upper Canada where he died in 1857. He was an elder under Dr. McGregor and a very prominent man on the East River in his day. Alexander McDonald, his fifth son, settled near Bridgeville and was the father of Hon. James McDonald, Chief Justice of Nova Scotia. http://www.biographi.ca/009004-119.01-e.php?id_nbr=7579
My 3rd G-GF, son Ewen [Evan/Eoghan or Hugh] married Jane Grant in 1794 in Pictou County N.S.

Elijah Brown and Hannah Stafford, married 1820 at Ernestown

I am looking for any information regarding Elijah Brown and Hannah Stafford. They were married September 4, 1820 in Ernestown by Rev. Robert McDowall.

I located Hannah Stafford Brown in the 1852 and 1862 Censuses. She was a widow in each Census. Sometime before 1870, she emigrated to Will County, Illinois, where she lived with her daughter, Hester Ann McAllister.

I am descended from Elijah and Hannah's daughter, Hannah Rebecca, who married David Main in 1857 in Portland Township. They, too, emigrated to the United States before 1870.

I have family information that Elijah Brown and Hannah Stafford had eight children. I have established five children (Sylvester, Hester Ann, Solomon, William John, and Hannah Rebecca) and possibly a sixth (Calvin).

Any information at all regarding these Brown and Stafford families in Upper Canada would be greatly appreciated. I wonder if Elijah Brown could have been a Loyalist. Many of his children's census records records his place of birth as New York.

Thanks Ken,

I saw the Lewis Ettinger post and also the mention in Wikipedia. I had assumed UEL status was Canada wide, which is why I'm sort of confused as to why I can't find anything for Lewis. It was only the last month or so and I wish I could find the reference now. The main reference of the paper was that the UEL status was created/aimed for Ontario residents.
Maybe it is just that maritime UEL descendants are not pursuing it? (Which I find hard to believe).
Thats what I love about genealogy, there is always one more
stone to unturn lol!

Cheers,

Bill Morrison

Bill,

I know the designation applied to those that settles in Nova Scotia (and also what later became New Brunswick) since earlier this year I was able to confirm the connection to a Loyalist that settled in Parrtown.

In my personal opinion (and I'm sure others will correct me if I'm wrong) but the Loyalist lists from UELAC is not an all encompassing, 100% complete list. If you can provide proof that he fits into one of the following categories (http://www.uelac.org/membership.php) then you will most likely be able to apply for the UE designation as a descendant.

- Either male or female, as of 19 April 1775, a resident of the American colonies, and joined the Royal Standard prior to the Treaty of Separation of 1783, or otherwise demonstrated loyalty to the Crown, and settled in territory remaining under the rule of the Crown; or
- a soldier who served in an American Loyalist Regiment and was disbanded in Canada; or
- a member of the Six Nations of either the Grand River or the Bay of Quinte Reserve who is descended from one whose migration was similar to that of other Loyalists.

From http://www.familytreecircles.com/introduction-to-the-ettinge... that site states, "Lewis ETTINGER, a German, immigrated to Pennsylvania, USA. There he joined the 10th Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 84th Regiment of Foot Soldiers. This occurred about December 1782." The challenge then becomes locating the proof needed by UELAC to establish the claim that he did reside in Pennsylvania and he joined the 84th Regiment of Foot.

Best of luck,
Ken McKinlay

Lewis Ettinger

I have been working on my loyalist lines from Ontario for about a year now, but I also have a connection with Lewis Ettinger who settled in Hants county Nova Scotia.
According to the UELAC he is not listed on the Loyalist list which I find odd since he was a Sargeant in the 2nd battalion of the 84th highland regiment. I read recently that the UE designation was applied chiefly to residents of Ontario. Wondering if that is why I couldn't find him on the list. Looking forward to any thoughts or advice from the UEL veterans on the board.

Cheers,

Bill Morrison

Re: GRANTS of Glen Moriston, Inverness Scotland to NY to Glengarry Ontario

I have recently found my Grants in the Upper Canada Land Petitions on the LAC website.

I have a John Ban Grant whose children applied for land as SUE and DUE. He had the following children:
Peter Grant b. 1798 * my line
John B. Grant b. 1801
James B. Grant b. abt 1805
Margaret Grant b. abt 1809
Alexander Grant b. abt 1810
Mary Grant b. abt 1810
Peter Grant b. abt 1813 *new wife
Flora Grant b. abt 1815
Duncan Grant b. abt 1819
These petitions were all filed in 1843 and they state that John is about 80 years old. He did his duty in the late war and in the outbreak in 1837 and 1838.

On each of these children's petitions, they noted that they were the children of John Ban Grant on Lot 10 of the first concession.

I then found the petition of John Grant, son of Peter Grant, a UE Loyalist. On the side of the petition is a tiny note saying that John is on the East half of Lot No 10 in front. It also notes that he was with the KKRNY. (1803, Bundle G6, Pet 19, C-2029). I also found a petition for a John Bane Grant. (1819, Bundle G12, Pet 89, C-2030) This Petition states that this John lived in New York Prior to the Revolution. Joined the Royal Standard in 1780. He was in Canada since then and Upper Canada since 1783. John is asking to be on the UE list so that his children can request land. Also, it says that he was a prisoner for about 3 months.

I have the Abstract for the East 1/2 of Lot 10 on the 1st Concession. It is Crown to Peter Grant in 1798, Duncan Grant to John Grant in 1807, John Grant to Peter Grant Jr. in 1845. (I think that Duncan may be John's brother.)

I have seen a Peter Grant, that is listed on the KKRNY list that I think is this Peter. This is definitely not Peter Grant the Sergeant. I found Sergeant Grant's petitions, where they made an inventory of all of his lots. They listed lot 10, but Sgt Peter Grant said that he didn't own Lot 10.

I am fairly certain that this John Grant and his father Peter lived on Sir John Johnson's land in the Mohawk Valley in New York and were some of the original UEL on the victualizing lists that were mentioned before. I am not sure which ship they arrived on since I don't see their names on the Pearl reconstructed lists that I have found but I am still looking and maybe he was on the Hector.

I have no idea if this Peter is the "Black Peter" mentioned in previous posts but my cousin John had his DNA tested and it does match fairly closely with the Clan Chief's DNA and we are certainly closely related.

John Grant is buried in the Summerstown Salem United Church Cemetery. I am not certain about where Peter is buried or when he died. If he is the Peter listed with the KKRNY, it says that he was born in 1736. I found a Peter Grant tombstone in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church that states "In memory of Peter Grant, a native of Glenmorrison, Inverness-shire, Scotland who died at Martintown, Glengarry. 19 November 1813 aged 74 years." This could be him.

This may help answer the questions about John and Peter in the previous posts (or it may only add more confusion).

Any thoughts?
Barb Gressel

New York Loyalist Declaration of Dependence

The New York Historical society has a copy in the Luce Collection, but I can't read it online at all. But if you're in the city ...

I too would like to see whether my NY Loyalist ancestors (Harpel or Harpell) signed the petition. Because there were so many signatories it could be. By the way, I believe that this petition had so many signatories not because it was more popular than the Declaration of Independence, but because it was available at a tavern for any to sign over the course of several weeks. There was no such opportunity for patriots to sign the D of I.

Catherine Edwards (Nazareth Hill, UEL) Seeking the TRUTH amongst a sea of mystery!!

Hi, I am looking for facts regarding Catherine Edwards (wife of Nazareth Hill, UEL).

I have recently found very conflicting lineages and pedigress online for Catherine.

One such confusing story is her father was a sea captian, Robert Edwards. That he died at sea.

The conflicting story, is that the same Robert Edwards was the heir to some property in Manhattan and because he died at sea, with NO HEIR (never married, no children), the "fortune" has been fought over for decades by Edwards descendants the world over.

In all honesty, I don't want to deal with lawsuits in Manhattan, no matter how huge the booty is. I just want the honest to goodness pedigree for my lineage so I don't make an error when I present all of my hard work to my family next year at the family reunion.

I need verifiable sources (birth, death, marriage, baptism records, etc) that show Catherine Edwards father (and mother) and his father and mother.

My personal email is:
countytreasuredistributors@yahoo.com

I am from Prince Edward County, where Nazareth and Catherine resided for a while (that is the "county" part of my email).

Sources I have looked at:
online:
I have googled and looked at family trees posted online. The error (or not) is repeated throughout a significant amount of trees.

I have also found "stories" online (when googling) about the "Edwards misFortune" and that it claims Robert Edwards 2, was not Catherine's father as he died at sea with no heir.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~sterne/edw... This link also tells us that Robert was a Welsh pirate rewarded by Queen Anne for raiding the Spanish ships, by a land grant of property in New York (the centre of the Edwards claim to a fortune).

In the "Hill Manuscript" there is a lot of conflicting information (because it was about the Edwards fortune and the Trinity Church etc, where people falsely claimed lineage and made the manuscript a muddled mess of genealogy)
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~brouwergen...

So, I am asking for HELP!! in for the form of hard-core-provable FACTS!

This is my friends account on ancestry, Jayson is awesome to let me borrow it... but you can call me Tracy and I am the g.g.g.g.g.grand daughter of Catherine and Nazareth, through their daughter Ann who married Charles Minaker:

1. Catherine Edwards & Nazareth Hill, UEL
2. Ann Hill & Charles Minaker
3. Susan C. Minaker & Daniel S. Williams
4.

Hello
I am trying to piece together events that occurred in the fall of 1781/ spring 1782 time frame. Captain Donald Cameron and Lt Archibald Cameron of the King's Carolina Rangers (Col Thomas Brown) held full officer positions in the fall of 1781. In the last muster roll for them dated spring of 1782, they had been demoted to Lt and ensign respectively. This was after the death of Alexander Cameron, Indian Agent, who had died in Savannah in late Dec 1781. Captain Donald Cameron indicated that he had been a friend of Alexander and his executor.
Has anyone read through the military correspondence of the time or have any idea why the demotion happened or how these two men were related to Alexander McLeod, alias Cameron the Indian agent?
Thanks
Kim

James Hayner b. abt 1750 Loyalist in Revolutionary War - NY to SC to KY ???

I have searched for years for a trace of my ancestor, James Hayner (Haner, Haynor, etc.) in New York State, where I believe he was born about 1750. I find no trace of him until he was in Kentucky by 1806. I believe he lived for a number of years somewhere in the mid-Hudson River Valley areas of Columbia, Rennselaer, Albany, or Saratoga counties, and I know he had either close or distant relatives in that area through DNA testing that closely connects James Hayner's line to the larger NY Hayner family, but have been unable to find any mention of HIM in New York.............until, perhaps, now.

There is a James Hayner listed as a private on an American Revolutionary War Loyalist muster roll of Captain Gray's company in the New York Volunteers from February into April of 1781.........and he was listed as being in a Southern Campaign during that year in connection to a commander named George Turnbull.

I believe his outfit was sent to the Carolinas at one point...........which is also important because I have a little indication that James DID live in the Carolinas before moving to Washington County, Kentucky by about 1806..........the Kentucky years, those being from his mid-life on, are the years of which I have details about him.

Unfortunately, the first half of his life, as you can see, has been all but lost to history, and I am trying to find him and re-connect him, and myself, to his New York State and German ancestors, but am struggling. Does anyone has a clue or suggestion?? Are there other Loyalist records where I might perhaps find names of his parents or siblings?

His children born between 1787-1800 we believe were all born elsewhere (Carolinas? New York?), not in Kentucky, but have only one census record clue where one grandchild of James says his father was born in SC.

I would appreciate help from anyone who has knowledge of the Loyalists. Did New York Volunteers who helped in the "Southern Campaign" frequently stay in the Carolinas? Might he have stayed and had children in South Carolina and then moved on to Kentucky? Were these folks somewhat persecuted after they lost the war and he was intentionally leaving very little clue after arriving in Kentucky as to his past? He first shows up in the 1810 Census in Washington Co., Kentucky (remember he is about 60 years old by then--and lived until 1849 - almost 100 years old) I have been unable to locate him in 1800 or 1790 censuses under various spellings. Any suggestions of where I might go from here, especially to get more info on the specific James Hayner listed as a NY Volunteer, would be very helpful and welcome!

Dear Kim:
I just came accross your site while searching for a link to my ancestors. I am researching John Murchison Sr. and John Murchison Jr. who arrived in the colonies in 1773 and settled on Sir John Johnson's land in Tryon Co. New York. Both served with the Royal Regiment of New York (watt's Co. and Munro's Co.). Both were discharged in Montreal in 1783-84 and settled on lands in Charlottenburg Co. - Glengarry, Ontario. I am descended from John Murchison Sr. through his son John who moved to York, fought in the 1812-14 war and was granted land in Etobicoke, On.
Both John Sr. and John Jr. were granted land in Glengarry as were their other children.
Any information you have on these two men would be most appreciated, eg: parents, port of entry into the colonies, etc. I don't believe John Sr. and John Jr. are father and son as I have read conflicting information on this. Clarification would be appreciated.
Finally, have your passenger lists or other works on this topic been published and if so where can I access it?
Thanks;
Gary Murchison
formetrics@shaw.ca

Anne,

Thanks for researching! That means the death notice I thought was for my Alexander was for Catherine's husband. Therefore, my death date for my Alex reverts to "after 1851" which I had before we discovered the incorrect death notice.

Thanks again for this. Do you have any more information on his wife: Sarah Claridge? I think you once mentioned New York and him being a prisoner during the war.

I really appericiate this again.
Joe Cunningham
