Surnames: Byrd, Bird, LeBrid
There's a great book called "The Byrds of Virginia," which says that William Byrd The First came over on a very early boat to Jamestown, changing his name from Bird to Byrd on the boat over because he thought it would look more aristocratic... His ancestry is traced, in that book, to Hugo Le Brid, who was a knight templar. It goes back even farther, to Britton (Le Brid as in Le Brit as in the guy from Britton?), and even to Charlesmagne.
Also note that there was a Chief Byrd of the Cherokee Nation in the 1990's - my guess is that somehow harks back to the trip by Wlliam Byrd II to the Carolinas, where he led a Cherokee tribe in the French and Indian Wars.
I would be very keen to learn of other origins of the name Byrd, or the lack.
