Sources and Reliability - Blomefield's History of Norfolk

I have many questions, but this one dictates all of the olthers:

Does anyone here have an idea of how much trust should be placed in Blomefield's History of Norfolk?

I am currently tracing the de Bokenham/de Snetterton family who held the Manor of Old Hall in Snetterton, Shropham, Norfolk.

I first looked in Maudsley's Notes and extracts concerning the Bukenhams or Bokenhams of Norfolk, which is as the name say: a compilation of extracts copied from other sources. He paraphrases or directly quotes large sections of Blomefield, but upon reading Blomefield's text their are many discrepancies - and I've only checked up to page 6 of Maudsley's book so far.

So now I feel that Blomefield must be trustworthy - he actually looked at these old records I think.

Does anyone know if this is so?

If I trust him, then in two paragraphs I have the bones of my family history for 500 odd years. If I don't, well pretty much every other writer I can find has followed him and I don't know where to begin. I am having a hard time finding even a reference to where the records he looked at are now kept, or where he found them originally.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated,

Lewis

Father of Albrecht VI von Everstein

The Europaische Stammtafeln Detlev Schewnnicke Neue Floge 1978 Tafel 83 lists Albrecht VI von Everstein married to Marianne and father as Ludvig I Graf von Everstein and mother as Adela von Gleichen. However Danmarks Adels Aabog seems to differ from that. While somewhat hard to follow the numbering and letter system it would appear that Eberstein in DAA 1892 pages 100-104 does show Albert Greve af Ebersein married to Grevinde Mariane page 102 but with a father listed as Diderik Greve af Eberstein married to Grevinde af Gleichen. Have I misread the DAA listing or do these two sources really differ and if so is there a consensus on which is correct.

Hi
I am looking for confirmation or otherwise of the following

Part of my trail has traced back to Estmond Earl of Mercia and his wife Godiva.

Many sites continually refer to Godiva as sister to WTC daughter Of Robert the Magnificent and his Mistress Harlette or Arlette

My problem is that Godivas birth date is around 1076.
PESTELL family - Priests, poets and pirates

I am trying to confirm a link which I beleive exists between the Pestell family of Colmworth, Beds., the Reverends Thos Pestell of Packington, Leics., and Captain William Pestell of Ratcliffe, London.
In the 1660s the Rev. Pestell (sen), who was a minor English poet, had in his possession a coat of arms which he described as being derived from the Pestells of Colmworth. His son states that the Arms were sent to them by a "kinsman" who was a captain of one of his Majesty's ships, and that the Arms were recorded at the Herald's office upon the restoration of Charles II. Burkes Armoury refers to such arms being granted in 1648 to a Captain William Pestell.
Capt. William seems to have had quite a colourful career in the interregnum and restoration navy and to have profited well from prize ships taken during the Anglo-Dutch wars, apart from being a paid government informer on the Fifth Monarchy movement. He eventually met his end during a raid on the Dutch forts on the Island of Goree, off Senegal, 1664/5

If any one is researching this family and period and can offer any help I would be most grateful.

Ken

Odard de Dutton

I wonder if anyone has any views on the following:

Odard came to England with William the Conqueror and was given lands in Cheshire. He took the name de Dutton. Families of Duttons and Warburtons were descended from him.

In looking into just who he was I find two alternative stories:

1. He was one of 6 brothers, sons of William d'Eu, and therefore a direct descendant of the Dukes of Normandy.

2. He was the son of Ivron, Viscount of Cotentin.

Anybody got any views on which might be correct?

My information is from the Dutton section of the American Colonial Origins site at
Rootsweb which quotes from "Leycester's Historical Antiquities" published in 1673 by Peter
Leycester, baronet, plus a footnote from Gilbert Cope. (Google Odard and it's the first hit). The
footnote said:
The Warburtons claim consanguinity with the ancient blood-royal of England, being descended from
Rollo, the first Duke of Normandy, through William, Earl of Eu, who married a niece of William the
Conqueror.

However Leycester himself casts doubt. Apparently the ancient Roll of the Barons of Halton saith
that with Hugh, Earl of Chester, came one Nigell, a nobleman; and with Nigell came five brethren.
Now Nigel was the son William d'Eu, but Leyester thinks he means he was accompanied by 5
brothers, but probably not his brothers.

The story that the 5 brothers were the sons of the Viscount of Cotentin comes from Lysons' Magna
Britannia, Vol. II (according to the same page). I don't know what weight to give this. Is there other
evidence? I don't think it can be ignored.

Now is the claim of consanguinity based on an interpretation of "5 brothers" or was there more to it?
I suspect perhaps it was so I tend to think they were the sons of Yvron of Cotentin, though I would
like to think the opposite.

If 5 brothers did come to Cheshire they would have matching Y-chromosomes which passed into a
number of Cheshire families. Is it possible it still survives today? If we could find it, it would signify
that a branch of Duttons, Warburtons etc. were directly descended in the male line. If it were the Y-
chromosome of William the Conqueror it would be even more exciting.

Now I do have one profile in my Warburton DNA Project which comes from someone who is
apparently descended from Odard. At least he links back to the Warburtons of Arley Hall who are
descended from Piers de Werberton, previously de Dutton, who changed his name in the 13th
century. A cadet branch moved to Ireland in the 1630s.

Of course one profile could be misleading as a 'non-paternal event' may have occurred at any time in
the 1000 years since Odard. If I get a match though things get interesting. I'm currently searching
for descendants of other branches of the Irish family, but there may well be other cadet branches
still thriving and a match could occur at any time. A match in another old Cheshire family like the
Duttons would be even more conclusive.
Leigh family of Egginton, Derbyshire and the Leigh family of Adlington

Can anyone help me with the descent of this branch of the Leigh family? What I have pieced together from A2A is the following.

Robert Leigh senior of Adlington
His son...
Reginald/Reynold married c.1482 Mary Vernon dau of Thomas Vernon - Mary is a widow by 1508.
(1479 a draft will was created by Reginald mentioning his brothers William of Ingoldesby and Peres (Peter?), and his bastard son James.)

Reginald had a legitimate son Robert who around 1508 married Anne Lathbury heir of her grandfather John and through her inherited the Egginton estate. Robert died c. 1525

William Leigh inherited Egginton so I assume that he was the son of Robert and Anne and he died before 1547. at some point he married Dorothy (the mother of his son Thomas) who remarried on William's death Richard Nedham of Snitterton.

His son Thomas was a minor on his fathers' death, and married in 1552 Anne Dethyk dau of William Dethyk.

Henry Leigh (son of Thomas?) inherited the estate c1598. married Catherine Horton of Catton. His heir was his daughter Anne who married Sir Simon Every, first baronet Every of Egginton.

Burke's Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Landed Gentry lists Reginald the son of Robert of Adlington as being the younger brother of Thomas of Adlington, son Of Robert Leigh and Ellen Booth but no mention is made of his brothers William and Peres, adding to the confusion this Robert could not be known as Robert Leigh senior as he didn't have a son Robert.

I believe Reginald to be the son of an earlier Robert but I am at a loss to try and locate the correct one.

Reference: D5236/6/22
Creation dates: [1478]

Grant by Reginald Legh' son of Robert Legh' of Adlyngton'
(Cheshire), esquire and James Legh' his brother rector of Rawstorn' (Cheshire), William Legh' of Ingoldesby (Lincolnshire) James' brother, Peter Legh' esquire, John Fletcher of Rawstorn' chaplain, Christopher Midelton' living in Adlyngton' and William Bradley of Chapel in le Fryth' of all property in Derbyshire
Witnesses: Ralph Browne, Edward Bagshawe, Ralph Assheton'
Dated feast of St James the Apostle 18 Edw IV [25 Jul]

Reference: D5236/9/27
Creation dates: 1479
Language: English and Latin

Deed setting up a trust to enact the will of Reginald Legh, son of Robert Legh of Adlyngton, esquire, deceased, for the benefit, successively, of any unborn heirs, his bastard son James, his brothers William and Peres and any of their heirs, starting with a feoffment to make an estate, by Reginald Legh to his brother William Legh of Ingeldesby and 8 others, of all his lands, tenements, rents, etc. at Godesclyf, Taksall and Adlyngton in Derbyshire and Cheshire, Monday before the Feast of St Michael the Archangel 19 Edw IV [27 Sep 1479]

If anyone can help shed some light on to this family I would be extremely grateful.
Question for the group about ancestry of the founding father John Dickinson

I am curious about anything the group knows about a possible descent for John Dickison from a Simon Dickinson m. Catherine Dudley. I haven't researched this line myself but others on the net claim it is the case. This Catherine Dudley is allegedly the daughter of Geoffrey Dudley, Esq. and Mary Talbot, an illegitmate daughter of Sir Gilbert Talbot whose wife was Anne Paston. They say that this Geoffrey Dudley, Esq. was younger son of the 2nd Lord Dudley and Cecily Willoughby. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

HILDYARD family from Yorkshire ca. 1590'si

I have (new to me) information re the marriage of URSULA HILDYARD to RICHARD JACKSON of Killingswold Grove, East Riding, Yorkshire, in the year 1596. These are direct ancestors of mine. Appended to the information is a supposed documented direct ancestry of Ursula's back through Piers Gaveston to Edward I and ultimately to William the Conqueror. Should I trust this lineage or is it likely to be fabricated?

Q. about recent discoveries of new royal lineages

I'm curious if anyone knows where one can learn of recent discoveries of "new" lines of royal descent.

I'm aware of the research of Douglas Richardson and others - and of the energetic debate that follows as these potential "discoveries" are reviewed by peers - but I'm not sure where to turn to find a list of additions to the complete peerage.

Would welcome any input.

Is anybody researching or have information on the LUDWELL family living near Salisbury in the mid 1500s onwards? Other affliated names are Saunders alias Ludwell and Audley alias Ludwell. There appears to be a connection between these families and Thomas Ludwell, merchant tailor of London who was living in London in the 1550s onwards. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Earls of Arundel; MONTGOMERY and FITZALAN

I am trying to sort my way through the connection between the First Arundel dynasty and the Third. There seems to be some conflicting information here (surprise?)

The 1834 Tierney book on the Earls of Arundel states that Roger Montgomery bestowed his NIECE Aimeria in marriage to Warren the Bald. States later that it was the (unnamed) daughter of Warren and Aimeria was the wife of Alan FitzFleald, the progenitor of the FitzAlan dynasty. Tierney cites "dudg. bar. I. 26." (?) for both of these references.

The conflicting info comes about with this Aimeria. Tierney clearly says niece and grand-niece, but most of the online databases show this Aimeria as either a daughter of Roger de Montgomery, or in some circumstances a sister. He did seem to have a niece of a similar name (Aimera or Ameria, from brother Gilbert I think) , but the databases show her as marrying Renard De Balliol.

Does anyone know any clear sources on this, or know what the "dudg. bar. I. 26." the Tierney cites might be?

early Grimaldis

I am descended from 2 branches of the early Grimaldi family. One of my ancestors was Tiburge Grimaldi, who married Louis Lascaris de Ventimille, who died before 1406. According to my records, her parents were Andaron Grimaldi, who died before 1340, and married in June 1315 Astruge de Beuil, a daughter of Guillaume Rostaing de Beuil and Beatrice Feraud. I know nothing of the de Beuils either. Andaron Grimaldi was a son of Barnabo Grimaldi and his wife Tiburge. I know nothing beyond this. I also am descended from Madeleine Grimaldi, who married Ranier Lascaris de Ventimille, a son of Louis mentioned above. Madeleine Grimaldi was a daughter of Luc Grimaldi, who died in Antibes in 1409, and his wife Yolanda Grimaldi. Luc was a son of Antoine Grimaldi, who died in 1358, and his wife Catharina Doria, who died in Antibes circa 1378. Antoine Grimaldi was a son of Ranier Grimaldi, born c.1267 and died in 1314, who married Marguerite Russo di Sinopoli. This is all I have on their ancestry. I have seen some genealogies online of the Grimaldis, and some are very confusing, and some appear to be wrong. I'm hoping someone can untangle these lines. goodbye for now.

Ancestry of Maud who married Wm. Bracy

What is the latest on Maud de Warrenne who married William Bracy? i've been looking at all sorts of possible family trees for her, and one that makes some sense shows he father as Wm. Blancminster and mother as Eva Fitwarine. I'm not looking for proof as I understand that doesn't exist. I'm just wondering what the latest conclusions on this family are. It is of course of interest because of the later Lygon connection.

I´m searching all the available info about Clemence de Fougères, daughter of Guillaume de Fougères by his wife Agathe du Hommet. As far as I know, Guillaume de Fougères was dead in 1187. He was, I think, but I´m not sure, imprisoned at Dol-en-Bretagne as an hostage of king Henry II. Her widow, Agathe, was herself a daughter of Richard du Hommet, constable of Normandy. Agathe had, if I´m not wrong, two children from her husband, Clemence de Fougères and Geoffrey de Fougères. Clemence was firtly married to Alan de Vitre and secondly, to Ranulf, count of Chester.
Thanks in advance!.

In State Papers relating to Ireland - Adventures for Land, is a Petition to the King (Charles II) dated 19th March 1661 from John Downing, showing that his father lost an estate in Ireland through his loyalty, & raised a regiment with the remainder of his fortune in England. He was killed at The Siege of Plymouth leaving a wife & 5 children. I believe the siege was in 1643. Can anyone tell me where I may find a list of the regiments that fought at Plymouth? Thank you. Jill.

Somerled

There seem to be disagreement as to who was the great grandfather of Somerled, King of the Isles. In Mike Ashley's The Mammoth Book of English Kings and Queens,1998, Charts 25 (page 420) & 29 (page 458), it shows the great grandfather of Somerled to be Margad (Meargaige), King in Dublin, Man, and Galloway, himself being the great-grandson of Ivar, the Viking King of Dublin. In an article found at http://www.electricscotland.com/history/articles/norse.htm the author states that Professor Brian Sykes of Oxford has identified a chromosome in the MacDonald, MacAlister and MacDougall clans that identify their common ancestor Somerled as being of Norse origins. Given this DNA evidence it seems reasonable to explore this connection as given by Ashley. It satisfies tradition that Somerled's ancestors were Irish kings and DNA science that his ancestors were Norse. My question is, does anyone know of any other good sources which support Ashley's line? Thanks in advance for any help. Mel

Honor of the Title "Sir" Versus Title of knight (little "K")

In official documentation in the medieval period if a person is designated as knight (small "k"), can it be assumed that this person has been knighted, or is designation as "knight" (small "k") simply a designation of job function? Similarly if a person is designated as "Sir", can it always be assumed that the person has been knighted? Was the use of the title, "Sir" handled differently between Scotland and England?

Jim Houston
Fort Worth, Houston

verifying nobility/royalty lineages

This may sound like an incredibly stupid question to those of you who have been doing this for a long time, but I was wondering how/where you would verify ancestors so far back as some these lines and families I have seen on these posts? Do you get "proof" from a history book? Any history book, or are there certain ones that are accepted as more reliable than others? The reason I ask is that I recently found some research done by someone elseon a line going back through an "Arundel-Howard" family from the family I am researching that seems to connect to an awful lot of royals. It seems somewhat unbelievable and I would like to somehow double check these findings but am not sure where or how to even begin. Thank you in advance for any help.
Stella

Surname roots: Byron, Bryan, Biron

I came up with this question due to various spellings for my name, including growing-up when a lot of people kept calling me by 'Bryan'. Biron goes back into 1500s in France, then to Quebec; Bryan to Bryan & de Brienne in Wales; Byron to de Buron in England - both of these last back to 11th century. At one time both de Buron & the Bryans apparently had a lot of land. Question: did these names originate from different roots or did they come from a similar source that was influenced by the ethic group & language where the people found themselves?

Does anybody have any information about the birthplace or early life of Sir Oliver Starkey (d 1588)? Oliver Starkey was the last surviving member of the Knights of Saint John and was the only English Knight at the Great Siege of Malta 1565
He would of course have been both a Catholic and a member of the nobility (if this helps).

However, another document states that he was infact the grandson of of Baul/Teval, and his real father was Tartar? Could someone tell me which is right.

The early de Fiennes

I wonder if anyone can help sort out a muddle for me please? Having discovered a descent from this family I have been searching archives and as much as I can on the Internet to try to decide on the most likely line. I have seen John de Fiennes mentioned as warden of Dover Castle (including Dover Castle's own website), and his descendants shown as James then John then Alan before reaching Ingelram de Fiennes who married Sibyl de Tingrie. I have also seen a number of sites which mention Eustache I, then Conan then Eustache II before Ingelram. Dates seem to vary wildly too.
I'm rather confused and don't want to go adding names to my tree which are guesswork.

Thank you
Sue

Johann Baptista von Taxis, married Christina von Wachtendonk, zu Hemessem, in about 1514. Christina was born between 1483 - 1487, possibly in Herzogtum Geldern. Christina's parents were Rombaut van Wachtendonck, of Ossendrent (probably Ossendrecht) (Possibly Geldern or Netherlands), and Aleyt de Cock van Beusekom, Of Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands. Rombaut is said to have been a Knight. Does anyone know of his connection to the van Wachtendonck family? Who were his parents, etc? Many thanks.

Benedictine Monk BETTI -673 A.D.

I am searching for information on the Anglo-Saxon monk who started a church Wirksworth England and may possiblely be buried under a stone at the site of the church. The monk studied under the Benedictine order and his name was Betti. He was one of the four monks credited with spreading Christianity to all of the UK. I am working on a link with St. Margaret Atheling and the Wirksworth church which was started by Betti. My family name is Beattie and historians have many times suggested that they were Anglo-Saxons who fled the Norman Conquest with Margaret Atheling to Scotland. Margaret Atheling was raised under the Benedictines in Hungry and would have gone on a pilgramage to Wirksworth because of Betti. This may connect her to the followers of Betti named Beattie's.

A program airing this Sunday evening on the History Channel, “Little Ice Age—Big Chill,” sounds like something many here (who have access to this channel or could get someone to record it for them) might be very interested in. According to the trailer: "It ended the reign of the Vikings; accelerated the Black Death; and triggered the French Revolution. From 1350-1850 cataclysmic cold covered the entire Northern hemisphere…” Anyway, it looks very interesting and could easily be an excellent source of background history for the medieval and later periods many of us study.

Jim
Hastings of Huntingdon?

In the Huntingdon Peerage table 3 I have found listed as the fourth son, Antony Hastings, of Sir Henry Hastings (of Humberston d. 1629) and Mable Faunt: . This is the only place I have seen this son named although I have seen several references to his having sons in Ireland. (One of these states he was Bishop of Carlisle and was removed because he would not swear an oath to William III, this seem unlikely as no Hastings is listed as Bishop of Carlisle and William III was much to late for a child of this marriage.) There was an Antoni Hasting in Humberston who had a son Edward in 1647 and another son Antoni in 1649. This Edward, I belive to be Col Edward Hasting Governor of Upnor Castle. This kind of position implies I think some family prestige. Unfortunately the fourth son wasn't of any interest to the investigators of the peerage succession and they supplied no further information. Any help would be appreciated.

Bill Tolch

Hi,

I'm trying in particular to authenticate in particular whether Joan Barry Roe was a daughter of James FitzRichard Barry Roe (as given in Burkes Irish Family Records 1976).

What's particularly troubling me isthat hiven that James was said to have been 87 when he died in Dublin in 1581, the fact that :

(a) that her husband David Roche is said have been born in 1573 (although I have further doubts about that date, as their grand-daughter Ellen McCarthy Reagh was married in 1634 - which would suggest that Maurice may well have been older)

and (b) Joan's brother David, 2nd Viscount, married her (Joan's) husband's aunt Helen Roche

makes me suspicious of the possiblility that this Joan may instead be a granddaughter of James FitzRichard?

I would appreciate any clarification....

Maurice de Berkeley, "The Valiant"

Descendants of Maurice, 4th feudal lord of Berkeley [c1330-1368], may be interested in this account of his contest with a French knight at the battle of Poitiers on 19 Sept. 1356.

Written by the chronicler Jean Froissart, this narrative provides an interesting insight into feudal rules of warfare. Where Froissart calls the name of the knight *Thomas* lord Berkeley, read Maurice, as Thomas was Maurice's father and is not accounted at the battle [_The Complete Peerage_], being an old man by medieval standards.

The proper identity of the injured and captured lord of Berkeley as Maurice is confirmed by _The Complete Peerage_, v. II, p. 130 and ibid note (c). Here is Froissart's account:

http://www.bartleby.com/35/1/205.html

Maurice was "never thoroughly cured of the wounds hee received at Poytiers," and died at Berkeley Castle on 8 June 1368. Among his descendants are a great-granddaughter, Eleanor de Beauchamp, wife of Edmund Beaufort, marquess of Dorset [grandson of John of Gaunt].

K
Gilbert, Poynton

I am looking for an early association (1500s or earlier) of the Gilbert family of Derbyshire and the family of Poynton.
Sir William Gilbert of Queens county, Ireland registered his arms in Ulster, quartered by his wife's arms, Castillion, and quartered also by the family of Poynton.
Additionally, Sir William Gilbert is apparently from Spondon, Derbyshire but his crest is the same as that of Humphrey Gilbert of Devon, the squrriel feeding on a nut.
I would like to find out what the family association is between the Devon Gilberts and the Derbyshire to Ireland Gilberts.
Adela Talvaise

Thanks to all for the help with the Montgomery/FitzAlan question before.

Here's an interesting one. These women seem oddly similar.

Adela de Talvaise (b.~1124, Alençon)
d/o Comet William Talvaise (b.~1084, Alençon)
ux Patrick FitzWalter de Salisbury

Adelia de Talvas (b.~1110, GGD of Mabel Talvas de Alençon)
d/o William Talvas (son of Robert de Bellême)
ux William III de Warenne

The one Warenne daughter that I believe is documented , Ida, is attributed to have been born 1137, and William III Warenne supposedly died 1148. (Honour of Warenne passed to Ida's husband)

The "other" Adela supposedly married the Patrick the Earl of Salisbury in 1149, and the Salisbury (d'Evereux) children were supposedly born 1150-1154.

I cannot seem to find any databases though that have made the connections of these two women. However, they seem far to parallel to not identify. Even with Ancestry's new OWT algorithm, searching the woman with either spelling with father William, brings up both, but each shows either spouse Salisbury or Warenne, never as wife of both men.

Anyone know any further background on "these" women?

Danes of Dublin

I have found a reference in the added notations of The Annals of Ireland, stating that the surname Gilbert in north Dublin city is believed to come from the Danes. Later Gilberts of Dublin in my line in the 17 and 1800s married both a Hendricks and a Facon (Fagan?) which also are mentioned on the list of Dane orgin surnames.
On the same page as this Annals notation is a blurb about Bishop Gilbert of Limerick also being a Dane. Various biographies about him mention that his name was actually and more accurately Gille.
Can anyone confirm Gille as a Danish name and also confirm that the Gilbert surname came from Gille? And that the roots of the Gilbert surname in Dublin may be, at least in some instances, of Dane orgin?

Hi, I am researching my mothers line Oliphant/Olivant especially in the Forest of Inglewood in Cumberland. I have a good collection of wills from 1566 onward, but I am seeking earlier information, such as where the Olivants came from, and what brought them to the Forest and when. Any clues and information would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Jackie Nicholson

Earl of Dudley from Scotland

Last year I had the wonderful opportunity to do some family research in Ireland and on my last day in Templemore, Tipperary I spoke with a Mr. Dudley (only one in the area), who told me his daughter, a school teacher, had traced the Dudley line back to Mount Dudley near Roscrea and that they descended from the youngest brother of the Earl of Dudley, who came from Scotland during Cromwellian times. In talking with the daughter she confirmed this, but said her records were lost. A letter in my family from 1904 gives the name of my 4ggmother as Phebe Dudley married to William Grey along with their 12 children. The first child was born in 1792. So she was likely born before 1770. Ten of the 12 children are in the St. Mary's Church of Ireland records in Templemore. Gray was often used as well. A daughter, Mary, married Peter Molloy in that Church in 1826.
Does anyone know who this Earl of Dudley was? And who was his youngest brother, who came to Ireland at the time of Cromwell? Also who were the original settlers after whom Mount Dudley is named? Any information or recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Early Mildenhalls and early Tubbs.

Hi! I'm interested in both the above families, the Mildenhalls of Ramsbury, Bedwin area of Wilts and the Tubbs of Wantage, Oxfordshire and surrounding areas.
I have one line back to 1515, the other to 1501. Now I'm stuck.
For any help or for news of fellow researchers I'd be very grateful. Hoping to hear from someone soon, Bridget.

Gruffudd ap Ifor Bach and Bowen/Fleming

I read some where that there may be as many as 20 descents from Gruffudd in the Bowen/Fleming line. Is this accurate, and how valid are the lines? Also, is there anywhere on line that lists these correctly? I have the lines given by Roberts and in Ancestral Roots, but I don't have access to Bartrum. I find it confusing to have so many individuals with similar or identical names and no dates to establish which individuals may in fact be identical. Any help, perhaps "Medieval Welsh Genealogy for Dummies", would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Ron

Thacker Family At Arundel Castle

My Line begins with John Thacker b. 1613 at Arundel Castle. I have names, dates and history of the family here in America but my curiosity leads me to wanting to know more about their life before they came here. Is it possible to find information about the Thacker family at the castle or during that time? Occupations, land owned or anything pertaining to them.
Thank You
I've seen it shown where Attila the Hun has been included in some family trees. can anyone tell me if this is correct?

Attila had a daughter named Escam. She married Ardaric and they had a son Elemund King Of Gepidae. He had a daughter named Ostragotha who married Wacho King of the Lombards.

can anyone verify this?

Leslies of Eardhouse and Wardis

Looking for information about this Leslie branch, somehow connected with Leslies of Wardis? I haven't found any kind of info of Wardhouses on the internet!

I have these individuals:
Anne Leslie b. ca. 1520-40, married Alexander Forbes of Thainston, Aberdeenshire.

Children:
Henry /Henrik) Forbes b. ca.1560, Captain in the Swedish army d.1605

Parents of Anne Leslie:
Jacob Leslie, baron of Wardhouse (!)
and Johneta Crichton (Crighton)

Parents of Anna come from Swedish sources, but I found a nearly similar couple:
John Leslie of Wardis b.1460 d.1546,
married Margaret Crichton of Frendraught

Is Wardis and Wardhouse same branch, and is Jacob a corruption of names James or John.
