DUPLICATE PEOPLE IN DIFFERENT TREES

I have identified a person in my friend's family tree who is the same person as in my own tree: Capt. Samuel Mathews, b. 1580. He is her 11x great-grandfather and my 14x great-grandfather. It is definitely the same person, as he was a well-documented very early settler and prominent citizen of colonial Virginia. My question: is there a way to calculate exactly how my friend and I are related? Are we "12th cousins, three times removed" or what? How does one figure this out? Needless to say, we are both tickled. Thanks for your help. -- Kathleen
