Classification: Query
According to other boards, sites and professional genealogist, one should always use the name of the place at the time the event took place, regardless of what it is called today. Then in the Notes section you can list the various changes the place name went through.
Last year I sent a query to the DAR about this very issue. Should someone living in Boston in 1770 be listed as Boston, MASS, USA or Boston, MASS, England. Their answer was "Either one would be appropriate." Not much help.
I like the suggestion of using Colony and would probably use Boston, Mass Colony, North America.
