Some additions to my original post.
I found more information by checking:
(a) cemetery inscriptions (what an amazing source of information)
(b) checking church records for a different religion (apparently branches of the family started switching religions at this point)
(c) checking an alternate spelling of the last name (there are two versions that are commonly interchanged)
Still, I'd be happy for any other tips.
