Yes, there are those types out there. However, as you said, unless you are out for the monetary (money) profit of the deal rather than knowledge (getting to know who is who), then So What. If you can get info on your own, pay for it to show actual documentation and Real proof of "stuff" to back up your work, then let the "pickers" get a little once in a while. It helps your overall records get more complete and they don't have all the answers. I, myself, have a tree listed on the site that I control. The info is available via the site in its databases. I have looked and found errors in the database posted, but I still have the satisfaction of knowing "that is wrong - this is what it actually is". Why? Because I have the documents that back it up and if you want to see them - I can provide them - if you want copies - "cha-ching" pay me. Just remember, eventually, they may be attempting to do the same to you. So keep researching, documenting, and "collecting" but provide only the info you are willing to.
