Similar experience. Found a fairly distant rele who married his dead wife's sister, they travelled from rural Northants to London for the marriage. Within a week I found the same thing in a different branch of the family, they too travelled a long way for the marriage. Certainly the church USED to frown on marrying sister/brother in law, but I'm not sure it was illegal.
