2nd marriages to 1st wife's relative!

I came across a curious thing the other day where a male ancestor's first wife died and he ended up marrying a relative of hers. A day later I found another case where this happened (this time a marriage to a 1st wife's sister). How common was this kind of thig? Do you think they would have done this so that the children (past and future) would have all stayed within the same family?
