Birth Certificate Blank... Now What???

Hi There! Recently, I assisted a close family friend who was born in 1941 to finally track down a copy of her official birth certificate, which was a big accomplishment. However, her father's information was left entirely blank. Her mother, who is still alive, swears her father is so-and-so, who is dead. I can find no documented evidence that father and mother ever lived together (obviously, they were never married), so am hesitant to accept this as gospel. My question is, how do I assist her in her quest for roots at this point? With her mother still alive, would getting sworn statements be admissible as genealogical evidence of paternity? Any help/ideas/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!
