The OSheal Newsletter is a success!!

I have received many Emails from O’Shields researchers who I’ve corresponded with for the past five years, thanking me for the OSheal Newsletter. It took a great deal of time getting everything ready, but it was well worth the hard work. Thank you so much for your continued support of me and my research which I have independently conducted on the Osheal/O’Shields family. I am so pleased to know everyone appreciated all the new found Colonial history on this great family. In the OSheal Newsletter, I failed to tell you I am now retired from teaching and am having fun attending interesting meetings and delicious luncheons in the fifteen historical societies I have joined. I am in both state and national chapters and serve as officer in five of those organizations. Many of you want to send money for postage. Thank you so much, but I prefer mailing them at my own expense. I do it for the pure pleasure of making others happy.

Need Printout for Family Reunion!

OK, sorry to sound panicky, but my mother-in-law sent me all kinds of updates to put into Family Tree Maker, including addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Now she wants a printout of each family that shows the new info, but I can't find anything that will include the address and phone number! I added those items to a descendant chart, but it applies the same address/phone to everyone in the family who doesn't already have one, including DEAD PEOPLE!

If anyone knows what I should do, or any other software that has a nice printout (our library has several different packages) that would be good for a family reunion, PLEASE let me know, ok?

Thanks in advance,
Jack (aka "the new guy")

Newsletter Feedback?

I and my sister do a quarterly family genealogy newsletter and have been for about four years for myself and my sister did it before on her own for about seven years. I am asking if there is some way to get some feedback from what has been put into the newsletter. I ask for comments, corrections, additions and etc. and get very little feedback.
Also, how to expand the newsletter to reach more people. It is done on a hard copy and sent out every three months. There is a cost, and the newsletter usually consists of approx. 25 pages per issue, which include photos sent in by other researchers, census readings, news of any sort of the family line, reunions, announcements, funeral announcements and etc.
The first page is usually something to aid or assist in research such as assorted stories written by other researchers and their problems and how they were met. The remaining newsletter is of assorted lines and informaiton.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for any input and help.

Narda Gard McNally
We publish the "Guardian" newsletter for those researching the name of Gard/Garde/Guard.

How do you get others involved?

I started writing and publishing a PA Flores family newsletter, Floriculture, in January of 2000. I prepared six monthly issues and sent them by mail and e-mail to the relatives on record at our MyFamily site and other listings. In the newsletter I asked for contributions, suggestions, new information, but got zero response. All it became was a report on my research on the origins of the family and discoveries of descendents of the first immigrants who arrived in Phila. in 1739. It was a lot of work with no feedback, so I decided to just prepare an e-mail version and post it on the MyFamily site. Are all family newsletters a one-person show, or is there some effective way to get contributions and responses? In other words, how do you get others involved?
Ronald Flores
Conrad Flores(c1690-1764)> Michael FLORES (c1714-1773) > Johann Michael (1757-1799) > Salomon (1788-1869) > Reuben (1822-1884) > Thomas Jefferson (1851-1916) > William Franklin (1889-1960) > Charles Richard >1914-1989) > Ronald Charles (1940-).

This message board was created for those who publish genealogy-related family newsletters, and those who are investigating doing so. Here is where one can submit queries, suggestions, and feedback on methods of publishing, ideas for content, software used, and any other concerns pertaining to the topic.

If you already publish a newsletter (or several), your experiences will be appreciated. If you are thinking about publishing, your questions will be helpful and insightful to everyone.

There is already a Mailing List set up at Rootsweb for Family Newsletters. To join or read the archives, please go to:

http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Miscellaneous/FAMILY-N...

For now, I will not gateway message at this board to the mailing list.
Finding talented and experienced researchers not online

I really enjoy the process of seeking and finding new family history contacts online. Most of the articles for our DUNNGANS OF ALL SPELLINGS newsletter come from people who send me queries, biographical sketches, and short articles by email.
.
On the other hand, some of the most knowledgeable family history people grew up with books, SASEs, and written records and do not own a computer. Or are new computer owners who have not yet done more that email.
.
For my best contacts online I write them at least once a year and report on what progress we seem to be making - and invite them to write. Sometimes I send out a free copy of the newest newsletter with a post-it note suggesting they might be interested in a particular article. One construction contractor bought a computer and taught himself to type in order to exchange information more easily - but that kind of reaction seems to be unusual.
.
Any suggestions for finding and developing a working relationship with important researchers who are not online?
.
Best wishes,
Dick Dunagan editor,
DUNNAGANS OF ALL SPELLINGS newsletter
1969 Pioneer Drive
Beloit, WI 53511
Email: RVDunagan@aol.com

Anyone gearing up for Memorial Day/Mothers' Day?

Hi all,

I know we all have different publication schedules, but I was wondering if any of you are preparing anything special for Memorial Day or Mothers' Day. I thought we could bounce some ideas off each other.

I sent out some emails to relatives a while back, asking for some kind of contribution regarding the veterans in their families. As is the case with so many of us newsletter publishers, response was minimal - but the few who did respond were great.

One cousin interviewed her father about his experiences in Viet Nam, and I'm just waiting for the transcription. She told me she found a website that had suggestions for questions when interviewing a veteran, and she also taped it. Her father was in 'Nam, her grandfather in Korea, and her great-grandfather (my GGF also) was in WWI. They were all named Eric, so I'm going to have photos of all three Erics in the newsletter. Her interview will be alongside an article I will write just listing which ancestors and relatives have served in the various military branches. I think the three photos will be a nice juxtaposition of the generations - my GGF on the beach in Newport, RI, in his Winter woolen Navy uniform & cap, holding his trumpet (he was a jazz musician); his son in a more formal headshot portrait in his Navy uniform, and his grandson (my cousin's father) in a mud-soaked Army tent with a big shiney peace sign around his neck.

I haven't yet figured out what to do for Mothers' Day but another cousin sent me a bunch of photos from her daughter's Quincineria (a Spainsh "coming out" party or cotillion for 15-year old girls), so that's a nice start. And my mother's birthday is a few days after Mothers' Day, so I could do something special for her, but she might get embarrassed.

I'm shooting for an end-of April/early May publication for this issue.

Anyone else care to share ideas?

Diane I.
Board Admin.

I thought I'd share my family's newsletter. This goes out about once every two months - and everyone just emails me with their news or memories.

http://www.joeydragon.com/Familynewsltr/feb2002vol1.htm

We've found that its a good way to let the little kids know where and who they came from as well as keeping everyone up to date on what's going on.

The newsletter started out with just the immediate family and is now being circulated to Aunts, Uncles and cousins.

I'm not sure what to ask or to offer - but I agree with those who say that helping each other is a key to many, many aspects of genealogy and family history.
As a retired history teacher, I had a head start on developing some skills and the confidence to push ahead with uncertain experiments. For example, I decided to use a pattern of 3 newsletters a year [Groundhog day in Feb., Mothers Day in May and Holloween in October] that would fit my schedule of interests. The first newsletter was a single sheet of paper, but now there are usually 16 to 18 pages in a newsletter.
I also send out a 4th publication which I call the "December Flyer" so that I have a separate issue for discussing my own person line and my own personal interests. For example, the December Flyer sometimes includes poetry, fiction, and art work.
Any questions? Any suggestions?
Best wishes,
Dick Dunagan editor,
DUNNAGANS OF ALL SPELLINGS newsletter
1969 Pioneer Drive
Beloit, WI 53511
Email: RVDunagan@aol.com

Creating PDF files - a great resource

If you're looking for a reasonably priced way to create pdf files, PDF Factory might just fit the bill. PDF Factory is "shareware" (free to evaluate, but if you plan to keep using it you pay a nominal fee to register).

Since downloading it recently, I've been able to create PDFs from a variety of software applications including Pagemaker, Publisher, Word, and WordPerfect. Its really easy to create the PDF -- you just select PDF Factory as your "printer" -- and the rest is automatic.

BTW, until you pay/register the software is crippled in this way:
*your pdf files will display a small "ad" for the mfr in a footer on your pages
*you will be limited to a maximum file size of 8 pages or less

Here's the URL for PDF Factory~

http://www.fineprint.com/software/pdffactory/standard/index....

(For the record, I am not affiliated with the PDF Factory folks in any way -- just a happy user!)

Happy publishing!

Cindy Fahrbach
******************************
Visit our family webpages at:
http://znap.to/banegas
******************************

This article from newsletter-tips.com is a good overview of putting together your first family newsletter. (This link was originally posted to the RootsWeb Family-Newsletters-L by Tisha Hendricks.)

http://www.newsletter-tips.com/RscArticleV.asp?id=17

Happy publishing!

CindyF
http://znap.to/banegas

Resource for poems

Hi all~

On occasion I like to include poems in our newsletter. I keep a couple of volumes of poetry collections at my desk.

Here is a link to a site where you can search poems by a variety of keywords. I haven't found any of the great classic poetry on this site. Rather, it contains the kind of poems you see in greeting cards or on posters:

http://dmarie.com/asp/poems.asp?action=queryform

BTW, this link is part of a scrapbooking site.

Happy publishing!

CindyF
http://znap.to/banegas

Electronic or hard copy?

My newsletter issues to date have been hard copy, some nice paper (expensive), and often long (expensive). I have like the results, but am now in the process of putting together a web site newsletter with a format which can be printed and put together in hard copy. Distribution to relatives in other countries will be easier than using the mail, but then again not everyone has access to the Internet. Also, the web site format doesn't match the hard copy format. Any thoughts on the merits of the two formats?
