That is a very common migration route. Many families from NC and TN settled in IN about that time. The general route is as follows:

Many roads extended from western NC into the north eastern corner of TN. The key passage was the Cumberland Gap at the TN/KY border. From there,the route traveled north east (Daniel Boone blazed the trail) to Corbin, KY and then went north to Lexington, KY and then northwest to Louisville, KY. From Louisville, Indiana is right across the Ohio river.
