The 3rd KY was organized at Camp Dick Robinson, Garrard Co., KY in the summer of 1861 and mustered into service Oct. 8th. Thomas E. Bramlette was selected its Colonel. Co. D's captains were John C. Bolin and John L. Gilmore. The Reg. moved from place to place in KY during its early organization and was in the Fall of the yr. in Wayne Co. where probably Miles enlisted. In March of 1862 it was at full strength of 900 men and in Buell's army at Nashville, on the field at Shiloh, at Perryville in KY and many more engagements with Gen. Rosecrans. On the Confederate Retreat in GA, Johnston established very strong defenses at Resaca. In one attempt to force Johnston from his works, Gen. Sherman lost 1,000 men. Johnston attacked also trying to turn Sherman's left flank, but was unsuccessful. In the two days of fighting here, Sherman lost between 4,000 and 5,000 men. Some where in this continued conflict is where Miles was probably wounded. My sources are Union Regiments of Kentucky by Speed, and The Wild Riders of the First Kentucky Cavalry by Tarrant. There is much more and perhaps it will be published someday to this page.
