So many things to love about this name, but probably the best is I get to meet people of nearly every ethnic, racial and socio-economic group and joke with them that they must be my cousin.
The problematic side of that coin, though, is the name is the shortened version of any number of ethnic names, and I have no idea what my family name was as little as 3 generations ago.
My paternal grandfather was Joe (Joseph, on census forms) Rose. Records say he was born in Philadelphia, Pa. and both of his parents were born in Russia. As if Rose wasn't broad enough, Russia's pretty huge, too...
As of the 1920 census Joe was living in Brooklyn with his wife Ida (Rudick) and their 3 kids-- Jack, June, and my father Carl. He was a successful vaudeville performer.
I can't find ANYTHING that looks like Joe Rose before 1920. My mother, whose 92-year old memory is fading fast, says Joe had a few brothers, and they were performers as well. I don't know their names. My guess is that they changed the family name from whatever it was to Rose.
Help! I want to know who I am past my grandfather! I never even met him-- he died 10 years before I was born. :(
Thanks for ANY help you can give!
