I am doing some research on the VonBrant Family. It appears that just after the Brant's came to the United States c1880...the name changed from Brant to VonBrant.
Andrew Brant is the individual from Germany and his son's name is Frederick George Vonbrandt. This seems a bit odd to me...we know that names were changed...but usually things were dropped like VonBrant becoming Brant.
I know that "Von" means "from (the family of)" and usually signifies a noble patriarchal lineage. Again it seems backwards to me. Perhaps they were saying at Ellis Island, "From The Noble Family of Brant". I don't know. :)
Any idea on the name change or history on this family?
