Forename Josan

Hi :-)

I have a number of great grandmothers with the forename Josan (variations: Joshan, Josen) all born in Cambridgeshire. When I initially came across the name, I thought it was a mis-transcription, but have discovered it is correct and was given to several generation of girls going back to about 1600. I have also tracked the family forward and found it to be in use up to the mid 1800s.

The name appears to be of Iranian origin, but is really a surname, or a forename for boys. Does anyone have any idea why it might have been used as a forename for girls at a time when people were quite conventional about the choice of names for their children?

Looking at it from a Dutch perspective, it could be the person's last name (a lot of Dutch names start with 'van', but where do the words Absin and Engelt come from? Is there an old Dutch word Absin which could be a place in 'Engeland' (instead of Engelt)? Or do the words not mean anything? Thanks!
The famiily was french Canadiann. The question I have is this. Was Onesime a name for a male or female or was it a name like Kelly or Cory that could be both a girl's name or a boy's name? Thiis person also has a spouse whose name is Narcisse. Not sure whether that is a male or female name either so you see my dilema. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
KIDS family name origin

My 3-great grandfather KIDS immigrated from England to the US in late 1700s. I can't find an orgin/derivation of the KIDS name. My grandmother's generation unfortunately changed the name to the more locally common Kidd. I do not
know if these names were from the same source in England
(neither did they).

My mother had a suspision (based on very little) that the Kids might have been Jewish in England and her Grandpa Kids knew it. He was very close to an old Jewish man(unrelated) who loaned him money in business, he never went to church with his wife who was from a family of Methodist ministers, and he refused to go to England to collect an inheritance.
Two of these behaviors would NOT be the norm for a man in the southern US (North Carolina) in the late 1800s - early 1900s.

Thanks for any clues on this name origin.

Meaning of name grunkemeier / grinkemeier / grunkemeyer / grinkemeyer

Does anyone have a clue what the name grunkemeier (grunkemeyer) means? It is also spelled sometimes as grinkemeier (grinkemeyer). I know the meyer ending is the anglocised version of the German meier. I also wanted to know if the grunkemeier vs grinkemeier could be explained by the pronounciation with a possible german umlaut.
The family came from near Hannover which is now in the state of Niedersachsen (where they speak Platt Deutsch).
Thank for any help

Reposted from the Genforum Scotland Forum
From "The Surnames of Scotland" by Dr. G.F. Black
Keay is a variant of Kay.
There was an old family named Kay in Yorkshire.
Kay and Kaye occur in various parts of England as far back as 13th century.
The Welsh forename Kei comes from the Latin Caius.

It may be connected to the MacKay or Macaoidh family.
The MacKays of the Isle of Man dropped the Mac. Early examples are Kee 1610, Kay 1617, Key 1616, Kie 1618. Some Scottish branches may have dropped the Mac earlier.
The spelling Keay was common in Perthshire.

Other spellings: Qua 1317, Ka 1399, Kaa 1370, Cay 1474, Kay 1552, Kae 1667.

Your best resource would be none other than from people closely related to your "aunt beaty" or within the family.

My thoughts right away was "beautiful". What a unique and different nickname if I were to spell it "beaty" for "beauty". Or twas an accident and the letter "u" got lost along the way.

Perhaps your aunt's nickname (what is her christian name) is pleasing to loved-ones eyes, ears, and hearts and "beaty" or "beauty" appropriately fit her to a tee.

Maybe as a little girl she pronounced "beaty" for "beautiful".

As was done in my family alot! My boys always said "booty" for "pretty" and not meaning a pirates treasure, baby shoes, etc. -GRIN-

Such a lovely tale!

Regards,
--Manaia
[my Samoan name which
means "beautiful"]

Just found out recently that my "real" father who's name is NOT on my Birth Certificate was born in Portugal, came to the USA as a child with his family to Hartford, CT area and his name is something like Manuel Quiroz or ????
My mother is older now and wishes to not open up any further on this after she let out this little amount of information to me. She is not sure of the spelling of the Surname, but says that she thinks it means something like Pretty or Beautiful in the Portuguese language. I have tried searching on this Ancestry.com for an answer but not doing to good at this.
Other info she let me know: He worked for Ford Motor Co in Oakland, CA in the 1950's and either before or after He also worked in the Oil fields somewhere in the Bakersfield area of California. Also he was in the Army or some type of Military Service.
Since I am not sure of the RIGHT Last Name, I hope someone out there will know of the proper spelling of the name with the definitions that I have.

SUELUS - name alternatives?

Hi all:

I was wondering if anyone knows of/can come up with alternatives for the surname SUELUS.

It was the maiden name of Amelia Elizabeth, born in England in 1828 (parents unknown). She married Alfred H. ANSTEE (equally elusive!) bef. 1852. There are possible connections with South Africa (her eldest daughter may have been born there in 1852/5). The family settled in Canada sometime between Aug. and Dec. 1858.

There is no forum for this surname and a google search doesn't seem to offer much either.

Any ideas?

TIA!
Gwen
Ontario, Canada

Hi,

I've been working with ones of my families that gave all of their children unusual middle names. The family dates from about 1848-1867 and the children were born in Iowa. The middle names are not related to the family (they are not maiden names etc) and I'm curious about why they were chosen. I'm assuming that they relate to prominent people of the time, but my grasp of US history isn't good enough to make the connection. Can anyone help? The names are:

Winslow
Addison
Ransom(e)
Pardee

Thanks,

Kathleen Sheppard
Kimberley, BC, Canada

Use of Stuart spelling vs Stewart, etc. spelling

Mary Queen of scotts was the first to use the Stuart spelling of the name. King James who authorized the English Bible bearing his title is sometimes listed as James Stuart but more often as Stewart. Actually it is the same name.
There is a Stuart of Bute family which settled along the Irish Sea in lowland Scottland and presumably adopted the Stuart spelling to simplify relations with the Irish who have no W. Ulster Scotts also adopted that spelling for the same reasons.
In America many Stuart's or Stewarts would select the spelling that fit in with their origins. Those transported around 1735 were more often Stuart but many Stewart families changed with time. And of course many Stuart families began using the Stewart spelling. Any genealogy research has to be done with the thought that spelling was often the result of education and as I learned early on teachers think they know everything.
Alan Stuart aka Allen Stewart, Allan Stuart, Allen Stuart or Allan Stewart. And in WVa. Al'n Sturrit

Mc, Mac, and M'

Here is a general question for a general board. For over a hundred years, libraries have interfiled Mc, Mac, and M' names. McNaughton, MacNaugton, and M'Naughton - not to mention Mcnaugton and Macnaughton - all mean exactly the same thing. Why do we have to look under at least two spellings for all our Scottish ancestors? Of course, this isn't as bad as some CD-ROM compilations where they actually SEPARATE the Mc/Mac from the stem name with a space. Maybe the moderator of this board can bring this question to the attention of RootsWeb and Ancestry.com decisionmakers.

Vache

Vache is pronounced "VashE". It has the accent on top of the "E". Vache (Vash) means Cow in French. Vache (VashE) with the accent on top of the e means cowhearder or cowboy. If the accent is behind the e, it is pronouced Vasha. The common spelling/pronunciation is Vache with the accent on top of the e.
