South Idaho Press (Burley ID) Obit Lookup Please

I'm hoping to get a copy of my grandfather's obituary. His name was William Joseph Schafer. Obituary should have been printed in the South Idaho Press, dated 6 Aug 1969. Surviving spouse was Elizabeth (Bauer) Schafer.

Neither the Family History Center nor the City Library in Burley Idaho had a copy of this particular issue of the South Idaho Press. If anyone has access to this, I would be very grateful!!

I found two death notices on 'links to the past' from Der Herold, there may be more but it's hard to tell w/o additional information since it is a common surname. I will do further digging to see if I can get full copies of the two death notices that I did find.

I sure wish I had taken German instead of French in high school....

You'll find quite a bit of information about this resource online with a basic Google search.

Prior to being cataloged as a collection at the Milwaukee Public Library (Sep2008) I donated a small portion of the early indexed records to the online site called Links To The Past. Those entries are searchable as part of the larger collection there.

The portion of the index that comes from the Salzmann Library collection, not found at MPL, are cataloged there, and available on-site in printed and CDRom format.

Other than those records, the database is not online. Yet.

Pending the index being available online through my own efforts, if not sponsored by a _local_ institution, you can request lookups in the most current data from the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness site.

Gary Rebholz
Milwaukee Wisconsin

Compiler and editor of "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items", and "Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items at the Salzmann Library"

OBITS 101,
sorry I have been away, here is what I found in a bunch of papers left from my Dads things:

From the Pauls Valley Democrat, Pauls Valley, Garvin county, Oklahoma, Thursday, June 27, 1946, page 4. "TRAIN VICTIM'S FUNERAL HELD Clarence Hodge Service Is Conducted Monday Morning at Wynnewood. Funeral services were conducted at the Wynnewood cemetery Monday morning for Clarence Hodge, 42, of north of Wynnewood, who was found dead on the railroad track in Wynnewood Sunday morning. Officers said he apparently had been struck by a train. Rev. S.S. Walker, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Wynnewood officiated. Burial was under direction of the Stufflebean Funeral Home. A coroner's inquest held he met death accidentally. Officers said Hodge last was seen alive about 1 o'clock Sunday morning when he started walking north along the railroad track from downtown Wynnewood, presumably on the way to thehome of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Hodge, about four miles north of Wynnewood, where he made his home. He was not married. Officers said it had not been established definitely when he was killed, but it was apparent he was struck by a southbound train. His body was found near the Hudson-Houston lumber yard. in addition to his parents, Hodge is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Addie Dew of Burbank, Oklahoma, Mrs. Nannie Oarland of Fort Worth, Mrs. Tince Garland of Denton, Texas, and Mrs. Maggie Clentos of Waurika, Oklahoma; and four brothers, Buster of Wynnewood, Ray and Joe of Modest, California, and Frank of Wynnewood, route 1."

I am also interested in what you found from the 30ies.
Thanks Teri

Thank-You for your offer!

Great! What time period do you have?

You searched for Douglas/Douglass and found nothing for them. My Asa Douglas(1739-1812) and his father Asa(1715-1792)tended to be very active in the affairs of the time; safety councils, land petitions, writing to Geo. Washington to complain etc. (Letters in Library of Congress).

I've looked over the death notice and it says Asa Douglass of New Canaan(Con). I take that to mean Connecticut. Which was where he was born, but did not live in older years. He lived in Canaan Columbia NY most of his life and is buried there. The Richmond Mass. made sense--border town. Where he died. Any insight to the writing/thought of the time is appreciated.

If you could look for Asa Douglas (1739-1812) w: Sarah Robbins (1731-1825), children Sarah (Wright), Olive (Warner), Eliza (Fordam) Nancy (Pierson) Polly Mary (Pierson), married names in parenthesis. Sons of Asa Douglas; Asa, Zebulon, Horatio Gates, John.

Zebulon and Horatio Gates might yield something. I do the something I go after the odd unusual names first.

Thanking in advance

Joan

This explains a lot

From article on About.com

"Because many of the newspapers of greatest interest to genealogists are old, the content is difficult to digitize due to the wide variety of inks, type faces, and font sizes. There is often less contrast apparent between text and background on the aged papers, and the old ink may have caused the letters to 'bleed' together a bit, making it harder for the OCR program to interpret the letters correctly. In addition, fading, wrinkles, ink blots, and other imperfections on the original page can interfere with OCR results.

For those of us using these historic newspapers online, this basically means that name and keyword searches (most of which rely on the results of the OCR software) will often yield less than expected results. It is important to realize that these every word databases have not been indexed by a human eye, and adjust your search strategies appropriately. Yet because hand-indexing is so time consuming and expensive, OCR offers an affordable alternative. Even a less-than-perfect index, is better than no index at all."

The article says a page by page search is most effective. A lesson I've learned through bitter experience.

A few months back I confirmed an article I found referenced in a local genealogy article and it was from the New York Times from 1886, now the Times is not even listed as a paper of that time or any other time on the Historical Newspaper Collection at Ancestry.com.

I agree completely. My biggest complaint is the search results, they are virtually worthless. In order to make an educated guess as to who you are looking for you have to read through pages of results, way too much information on the new search results. When ever possible and as long as it is available I will revert back to the old results format.

Pat

Chatterchit, thanks for the heads up on this location. I did relocate the article but had to go page by page through the week, finally finding the article on the first day I had looked at, I had missed it the first time.

It is interesting that the New York Times is not listed in Ancestry's Historical Newspaper collection at the state level. I remember finding the article before with a simple search of only the persons name and location.

Pat

Re: Columbian Centinel, Mass. Federalist 1812

The entire database covers 1690 to 1876, but individual newspapers have varying dates. The Columbian Centinel covers 1790-06-16 to 1823-12-31. I don't see the Massachusetts Federal, but there are 137 other Massachusetts papers.

It wasn't that nothing came up for Douglas -- I just could not find the obit you wanted by looking for Douglas. Plus, I was only searching in the Columbian Centinel.

Looking for "Asa Douglas" in all papers brings up six hits. Three are property notices (May 1774) in which he is acting as an Agent for the "Mohekanuck" Indians in trying to secure their property. (Very interesting, I think!) This man was living in Jericho, Berkshire County, Massachusetts at the time. Do you think he be one of your Asas?

Next is your Asa's obit again (no new info) published in the Independent Chronicle in Boston, April 27, 1812.

The fifth is a list of folks who have letters waiting for them at the New Lebanon post office, published May 26, 1814.

Last is an article entitled "Olden Time" which lists the "A Congress of Deputies of the several towns within said county" and has "Jerico, (now Hancock) Capt. Asa Douglas" The rest of the article outlines the resolutions of the meeting (boycotting British goods, along with lots of related details -- it's a fairly long article.)

There are six hits for "Asa Douglass" too -- more info later.....
