This is an article which I found in The Times of Monday Feb 7th 1927:
Members of the crew of the Clyde Shipping Company's steamer Sheerness, which was wrecked on Thursday on the Tuskar Rock, were for some eight hours at sea in open boats. One boat was picked up by the steamer Kingston, a welsh collier, and the other was able to land near Cahore Point, Wicklow. All the survivors are well, but the chief officer, John McDaid, was drowned.
I couldn't find any further mention of the ship or of any award of medals.

Aled

I'm trying to find the news report about the shooting of Micheal Rigney on 14 March 1875. The accused was Peter Claffy of Ferbane. If anyone has this info or know where to find it please let me know. There were three trials and several riots or so I have heard all centered around Ferbane county Offaly so there must be surviving records somewhere.
sean.
Hello..
Am researching my Beggs family and wondered if you have come across these names in your travels. My g-g-g-grandparents were William Beggs and Jane Graham. They lived around Ballymena/Ballygalley in County Antrim, born 1800 and 1803. They had Charles 1823, Ann Jane 1825, James 1827, John 1835, Thomas 1836, William 1841, Elizabeth 1844, and Nathaniel 1846. William (1841) went to live in Belfast and Nathaniel went to Scotland while the other siblings all came to Australia at various times. I'm not sure if this is anywhere near the area you are looking at, but thought it was worth a shot.
Thank, Jennie

Go to www.groireland.ie - follow the links and you can apply for birth, marriage and death certificates if you have enough details. A photocopy of the entry is cheaper than a certified copy, but the ones I ordered haven't arrived yet so I don't know how easy to read they will be. I've ordered certified copies in the past, and they were VERY useful.

I'm only a beginner myself, but I'd advise anyone to use Google and the library to read up on Irish genealogy as well as trying message boards.

Good luck to you

Norma

My Grandfather Thomas Francis. Donohue was a postman and a poet near Emyvale Co. Monaghan. he had several poems printed in the Northern Standard Newspaper and I am trying to track down any of his works. Most of his writings were focused on local/rural subjects.
He would be approx 120 yrs old if he were alive today! So his productive years would have been anywhere from 1900 to 1950.
If anyone has any info - please e-mail me.
Thanks

McNeely is a very well-known Scots-Irish surname. There are not many McNeelys in County Monaghan but back in the 1800s & early 1900s there were two families living just outside the Town of Monaghan and attending the Presbyterian Church.

Northern Standard Newspaper - Monaghan, Ireland

Researching the Northern DStandard Newspaper could not be easier. The Monaghan County Library in Clones has most Northern Standard issues on micro-film. An excellent new micro-film viewer makes researching Co. Monaghan News items a doddle.
Some notable worthwhile research items are :-
1. The 1920s Troubles and the various attacks on Protestant Farmers in North Monaghan. Accounts of all the atrocities of that period with names are there.
2. The period following Henry Francis Lyte's residence at Silverstream, Tyholland (1835 on).
3. The Monaghan Militia History and its disbandment.
4. The famous Monaghan families who contributed so much to the area.
Just specify the year and relax with a great read.

Re: Kerry Newspapers

Just caught an old post for the Laune Rangers and I think I just read something on them and that they are still around. You might try a google search for the name or even for Killorglin, which is how I think it came up. A bank in Killorglin is the sponsor and it struck me as several members of the teams they listed have names of people who are in my family. My grandmother, Ellen Mary McCarthy, was born in Killorglin in 1889 and I was able to drive through it on my trip to Ireland this summer. Good luck

1798 Rebellion data now on News Letter Website

The 1798 Rebellion was largely a Presbyterian Revolt against the unfair religious restrictions against Presbyterians. The Belfast Leaders were highly motivated and from a Journalistic or Newspaper Printing background. The Northern Star Newspaper where Henry Joy McCracken was prominent provided much of the thinking in print of the United Irishmen Leaders. The new News Letter Website, fully searchable and free, is a marvellous resource with searchable data right back to 1738.....a must for Genealogists searching Ulster Roots.
http://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/cgi-bin/belfst/retrieve?Person=... etc
Story was she ran away with Bernard Gaynor which displeased the family. Would like to hear from anyone who knows of the family. Thank you so much.

News Archives - Easter Uprising 1916

I would be interested in reading anything from a Dublin or Waterford newspaper about the Easter Rebellion, as I have recently learned that my great-uncle, James Patrick Cummins of Waterford, was imprisoned for his role in the uprising. There is no shortage of information on the internet, of course, but nothing can replace the original reports. Any leads on where I can find such articles archived online?
Thank you.
