Re: Albert Sheetz Homemade Mission Candies

Hello Ralph,

The names, the people and places you mention are all so very familiar to me. I remember Sheetz, Pershing, Pullings, Kohls, Mraz, Kimmel, Grogan and more.

My mother, Catherine Ann Ruffner was born in Greensburg, Pa in 1924. As a young woman, she worked for Albert Sheetz at the restaurant and fountain in Hollywood. I wonder if she is pictured in your photograph of the work force that was taken in 1937?

My dad worked for the Albert Sheetz Candy Company, too. Those were the happiest days in my father's life. I recall that he started there as a candy maker. He made ice cream, too. But, his machinist and mechanical abilities landed him in the factory. He was a steam and boiler engineer. Eventually, he studied refrigeration at night school and became certified. I believe that he made contributions to the development and improvement of the refrigeration at the factory.

June 4, 1949, Catherine "Kay" Ruffner married that "prince of a fellow" named Johnny Gage at the Santa Barbara Mission. Thank you, for your kind words about my dad. He was swell.

It broke my Dad's heart when the factory closed. He loved working for the Sheetz family. He had many friends there and fond, happy memories of those wonderful days in Los Angeles and at Lake Elsinore, too.

You may contact me by e-mail, anytime. I'd love to visit with you about this.

Thanks for the memories, Ralph.

Sharon Rae Gage Carvalho
I don't know when she died, not even sure of a location of her death. I don't know any DOB or DOD or where she grew up. She had a child by Bruce Nutter aka as last name Kelly or Kelley. He died in Ohio. He was my Mom's brother. They lived in various towns and cities in Washington State. My mom told she may have been the victim of murder. She and Bruce were never married that I know of.

It has always been a family story that the I love Lucy candy episode was filmed at the Santa Monica factory. Is there any info about this.
Regarding the photo of the Albert Sheetz Store. If it is the Santa Monica Blvd. store, it would be close to Vermont Ave....My Father was the ice cream dept. foreman at ALBERT SHEETZ factory from the late 1920s to about 1947. He always referred to that particular store as "NUMBER NINE." He would say "NUMBER NINE" in a playful tone as if that particular restaurant had a quaint, pleasent memory that he never elaborated upon....Maybe his "NUMBER NINE" was holding a pleasent memory of a tryst with one of the gals that worked at "NUMBER NINE."....Could this email lead to any revelation of the life and times of other ALBERT SHEETZ employees? I worked in the ice cream dept. in 1954 to 1955. Johnny Gage was the plant foreman at that time. With me, in the ice cream wing was JIMMY POINDEXTER. He quit in early 1955 and went to work for Western Exterminators Co...Feel free to call me if you have any info on the ALBERT SHEETZ story..I am RALPH PERSHING.....(415) 383-5462)...San Rafael, Calif....pershing200@gmail.com

I have quite a bit of history with Albert Sheetz Co. My mother, Alice Marie Pershing was a niece of Albert Sheetz. My mother's maiden name was Ruffner. My maternal grandmother was an Ehalt, from Greensburg, Pa., and a blood relative of Albert Sheetz. My father, John J. Pershing worked at the main factory on Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, Calif. He was the foreman of the ice cream department. His two brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, and my mother, Alice, all worked together there from about 1932 till about 1946. The brothers-in-law were George Pullings and Regis Ruffner. The sister-in-law was Elizebeth Pullings (Lib was her nick-name.) Lib Pullings was a Ruffner; hence also a blood relative of Albert Sheetz. My mother and Lib Pullings were sisters, Lib the oldest by about 12 years.... I have an original photograph of the entire work force at the Albert Sheetz Plant, posed 35 strong, in front of the Santa Monica plant, taken in 1937,(the year I was born.....My Mother and her sister Lib worked in the candy production wing of the factory. Lib's husband, George Pullings, and Regis Ruffner, my Mother's and Lib's brother, worked in the bakery wing...I was an employee at the Albert Sheetz factory from 1954 to 1955. The plant foreman at that time was the wonderful Johnny Gage. He was a real gentleman, and a prince of a fellow. I worked in the ice cream production area. I was in charge of all ice cream output for about six months, before I entered the Army in 1955. I was proud to be following in my Father's footsteps, doing the work he did for many years. As children, my siblings and I often accompanied our Father to the plant and assist in light chores in the ice cream department.....Please reply and share any memories you may have....I reside in San Rafael, Ca......I am yours sincerely, Ralph Walter Pershing....

quite all right, Sandy, I'm crazy busy here and was waiting for you to sort it out. I never questioned your intentions :)
if I disappear for a while, just see me up to my eyeballs in stuff, like Cathy in the cartoons, lol...maybe this winter I can squeeze Ed hard enough to extract a descent version of his stories from him. my memory is pretty poor for these things, so I get the story wrong more than half the time.
if you don't hear from me in a while, give me a holler, I'm not intentionally ignoring you, just got myself involved in too many projects and behind on some of them.

My goodness, this family has more exciting stories! Their lives must have been in constant turmoil. I'll pass everything along to my friend, something might spark a memory for her. She remembers her grandmother and the fact that she lived on Catalina Island. (Lucky woman) Mary Moore Howard and her husband Frederick moved to San Francisco where they had several more children. Frederick died in 1944 and Mary remarried a man with the last name of Kline. She died in 1949 from cancer.

Interesting that you have a story that Joseph Shufflebarger went back to Mary. In 1930 census Mary Mason was still living with her second husband Morris, her daughter by Joseph, her daughter by Morris and her brother John Denniston. Or could it have been another Mary? Mary seems to have been a very popular name in this family.

If you want to continue our correspondence, we could do it off the board. The address to use is: schan502@yahoo.com.

Thanks again for the stories,
Sandy
