Charles E. Bradshaw Sr.

In the process of doing my family tree, I found this information reguarding my great uncle's life and death.

CHARLES E. BRADSHAW Sr.
November 5, 1923 - May 17, 2007
by Dr. David Hopkins
Charles E. Bradshaw, Sr., was born on November 5, 1923, in Darlington, South Carolina, to Charlie and Lydia Bradshaw. He grew up in Darlington, attended the public school there until the age of 17, and enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1941 before finishing high school. His other brothers had joined the Army, so he decided to do the same. The only problem was his age, and when they found out he was only 17, he was dismissed, only to be drafted a few months later in April 1943.
After a tour of duty in the Army until 1946, in the summer of 1947 he and his bride, Evelyn, moved to Franklin Springs, Georgia, to attend Emmanuel Academy, where he finished his high school education and two years of college. He graduated from Emmanuel College in 1950 and continued his education at High Point College in North Carolina where he graduated with the bachelor of science degree in history in 1952.
Woodard G. Drum, president of Emmanuel College, heard that Charles had completed his degree and invited him to return to Emmanuel to teach and be the dean of men. He agreed and came in 1952 until 1955, when he was invited to become the superintendent of Falcon Children’s Home in Falcon, North Carolina.
As usual, Charles Bradshaw accepted the challenge of building a new campus for the orphanage, and in seven years (1955-1962) there were constructed a new administration building, three residence buildings for the children, and a new recreational complex, including a swimming pool. Falcon Children’s Home still stands as a tremendous tribute to the courage, determination, and skills of Charles and Evelyn Bradshaw. During that time he also served as mayor of Falcon for four years.
In 1961, following the resignation of Dallas M. Tarkenton, Sr., as the general administrator of Advocate Press in Franklin Springs, Georgia, Charles was asked to move back to Northeast Georgia to take that position. He reluctantly accepted the job and had several projects to complete in Falcon before moving, so for about six months he held both jobs as superintendent of the children’s home and administrator of Advocate Press. The transition was finally completed in 1962.
Since the Advocate Press building on Highway 29 had just been constructed in 1959, there was much to be done to continue the progress of the operation, and between 1961 and 1973 Charles Bradshaw directed many improvements in the building and the business. His expertise in construction also brought his involvement in helping transform the cotton fields of Franklin Springs into housing developments and paved streets. On property behind Advocate Press purchased by the Pentecostal Holiness Church he directed the development of a new street (Franklin Heights Drive) parallel to Highway 29, and a number of beautiful homes for general officials of the Church were built on the block.
From 1969 to 1973 he also was elected by the Pentecostal Holiness Church to serve as general secretary of the denomination. With a change in the General Executive Board of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in 1973, he decided to resign as the general administrator of Advocate Press and pursue other business interests.
Charles Bradshaw has always had a heart for missions, so from 1973 to 1977 he formed the Must-Share Corporation to raise funds to assist the missionaries in India primarily, where, to help Reverend J. M. Turner, he was instrumental in building an elementary school, a 90-student dormitory in memory of his mother, and the T. O. Evans Chapel in Giridih, India, named after his former South Carolina Conference superintendent. In addition, he began a program whereby churches and families in the United States could sponsor children in India on a monthly basis; this later became the official “People-to-People” ministry promoted by the International Pentecostal Holiness Church.
By 1977 Charles Bradshaw had developed several businesses in Northeast Georgia in addition to personally promoting world missions projects, and when he was asked to return to Advocate Press as general administrator, he at first said “No,” but his concern for the business and the employees brought him back to that position from 1977 to 1991. Once again during this time-period, a number of improvements were implemented and the building expanded.
Upon his return to Franklin Springs in 1962, Charles immediately began to be involved in improving the community. His first tenure as mayor of Franklin Springs began in 1963 and continued until 1973. After a two-year rest he was re-elected to the office in 1975 and remained as mayor until 1993, when he tried to retire. At the same time he was serving as an officer of the Royston/Franklin Springs Chamber of Commerce (president for three terms), as a charter member of the Royston/Franklin Springs Rotary Club, and for 32 year as a member of the Board of Directors of Tri-County/Pinnacle Bank. He is held in such high esteem by the citizens of Royston, an annual award given to a worthy recipient is named “The Charles E. Bradshaw Citizen of the Year Award.”
As if all this activity wasn’t enough, for many years Charles Bradshaw served on the Board of Education of Emmanuel College, and for 22 of those years (1978-2000) he was the chairman, working with Presidents C. Y. Melton and David R. Hopkins to move Emmanuel ahead. Many of the cornerstones on campus buildings bear the name of Charles Bradshaw as the building contractor, and his crowning achievement as mayor of Franklin Springs was the completion of the Swails Center and the Charles E. Bradshaw Pedestrian Bridge across Highway 29 linking the main college campus with the Swails Center.
Encouraged by his friends to come out of retirement one more time, in 1998 Charles Bradshaw was elected to his third separate tenure as mayor and served until 2002, when Brian James took his place. It would be an understatement to say that Franklin Springs would not be the beautiful, growing, exceptional community it is today without the vision, tenacity, and leadership Charles Bradshaw provided for many years.
Mr. Bradshaw’s funeral was held in the John W. Swails Center on Sunday, May 20, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. Presiding ministers were Dr. A.D. Beacham, Jr., Mr. Harrell Queen, Dr. David Hopkins, Bishop Leon Stewart, and Rev. Harrison Lampley. The graveside service was held at the Franklin Springs Cemetery with Bishop James D. Leggett and Rev. Harrison Lampley presiding. Memorial contributions may be made to: Charles E. Bradshaw Scholarship, c/o Emmanuel College, P.O. Box 129, Franklin Springs, Georgia 30639.

Fitzgerald Georgia Newspaper Transcriptions Online

Hi, as most of you know Ben Hill County, Georgia was not created until 1906 and other counties which were cut out of old Irwin County.

I am finding a lot of articles about people who live in the surrounding counties, such as Berrien, Coffee, Colquitt, Dodge, Dooly, Doughterty, Pulaski, Telfair, Tift, Wilcox and others in these old papers.

The first transcriptions are online now and I am transcribing more daily. Each week I will load the latest transcriptions to the webpages where the newspaper transcriptions are located.

Rather than only transcribe the highlights, marriages, deaths, births, and other vital records, I am also transcribing where people came from, where people moved to, where they worked, who they worked for. Did they add a story to their home, office building, did they attend a meeting.

School room news is included, church news is included. Statewide information is included. Anything of historical, genealogical value is being transcribed. As I go along I am also photographing what images there are that would be of historical or genealogical value to researchers.

Using a digital camera on a non glare film reader works fine if the lighting is right. In the late 1890s most of the images were drawings rather than photographs and there are not many of local citizens. However, in later editions I hope to find many of our ancestor's images online.

If you have any copies of clippings from the Fitzgerald or Ocilla newspapers for the years 1996 to 1997 I would appreciate your sharing them with others as those issues are not included in the collection that has been photocopied and archived.

Do visit the pages and if you find your own ancestors and the names are misspelled or if you have some family information to add don't hesitate to contact me as all family information, photos of your ancestors or of the landmarks is appreciated.

It is nice to put a face with the names found in these articles.

Did you know that Fitzgerald had saloons? Did you know that they had a beautiful opera house? That famous theatical acts came to town and people traveled from one town to another by chartered train cars to see the plays featured in Fitzgerald, Tifton and other cities where they had Opera Houses?

Our ancestors did not lead dull lives but very full and interesting lives. Without cable t.v., computers and all of the modern conviences we have they may have not wanted to trade places with us if given the opportunity.

What fun it is to travel back in time through these old papers.

Hope you will enjoy what you find on the pages and will let me know if you approve. There are only 64 more rolls of film to go. smile

http://home.comcast.net/~gholback/b_np.htm

Kind Regards, Gloria
Frank (Francis) Thornton, North Georgia, mid-late 1800's

I'm desperately seeking information on an individual named Frank (perhaps Francis?) Thornton. I know very little about him or his family, so I'd like some help from you genealogical detectives out there. Here's what I know about Frank:

He married Anna (Annie) Irvin in Georgia.
They had at least one child: Alice Thornton, born around 1892 in Georgia.

Outside of that, I'm assuming that Frank and Annie got married in one of the counties where Annie's family lived: Pike, Hall, or Jackson (in chronological order). Annie was born in 1868 in Pike County. She had remarried by 1898.

That's all I know. I would appreciate any help you could provide, especially family members. Surely, someone knows about the Thorntons in this area, and could offer up info.

Please email me at r.aycock@comcast.net with any info or advice. Thanks so much!!

Robert

Looking for Dr George Sanders/Saunders

George was born about 1835 in Tidworth, England. He was apparently in Atlanta during the time of the Cival War and may have died there during the seige. He was a Doctor.
I am trying to establish when he was there and have a newspaper clipping that he sent to a relative in Canada. The article was an advertisement put into the paper (don't know the name of the paper) by Robert A Crawford (formerly Crawford, Frazer & Co) of # 10 Peachtree Street. It was obviously before the abolition of slavery as he is advertising as a Negro Dealer. The only date on this article and another one about missing slaves is June 8-d&w2m and in the other June 23-dtf (by E. Steadman). I don't know if the initials after the dates mean anything or not but all I am trying to do here is find the date of the articles in order to establish that George was alive and living in Atlanta at that time. If anyone can offer help or suggestions I would appreciate it.
Doris

I've not found some I was searching for even though I had the death date.

Anyway, I'll let you know and either email or snail mail it to you. It only costs ten cents to copy from microfilm at our library so there's no point in reimbursing. I'm glad to help others who have encountered the same problems I have.

My grandfather, James Monroe (Mun) Williamson killed a man in Georgia sometimes around 1888-1898. He was married in Kaufman Co., TX in 1898. He was listed as living with his mother in Molena, Pike Co., 1900 GA Census, and his wife was living in Kaufman Co., with their young daughter in the 1900 Census. He had told my grandmother after he married her that he had killed a man and that he would have to go back to GA to do his sentence for the killing. How can I find out about this murder, and where would my grandfather have been sent to serve his time in Georgia?
There are several people transcribing newspapers, and they're being put on-line....

Here's just a few of the counties where this is happening (and some categories - marriages, obituaries are placed in those specific sections)

Under each specific category there is a "search link" so you can search just for cemeteries, obits, etc.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/marion.htm

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/newton.htm

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/schley.htm

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/taylor.htm

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/washington.htm

http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/talbot.htm

If you are transcribing newspapers, we'd love to have you post your information on these sites as well.
I am researching Parkers from Newton Co. Ga. I saw on Rootsweb where Noah Lewis Parker killed William Duke. Duke had killed Parkers brother (Tom) in 1869 or so. Duke served time in the Georgia State Pen for this murder, was released, and married one of the Parker girls. She turned on Noah when he killed her husband (Duke). Noah was pardoned by the governor in 1894 for time served. I would like more details of this murder and the earlier murder in 1869 of Tom Parker. Who was the Parker sister WIlliam Duke married? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks.....Kelli

Can anyone who has access to old newspapers please tell me the name of the Walker male who ran for Lt. Governor of Ga. in the early 1900's? My grandmother remembers her father telling her that his cousin ran for Lt. Governor around the turn of the century. She didn't know if he was elected or not, just that he ran. I'm having a TERRIBLE time tracing my Walker line and if I can find out who this "cousin" was and who his ancestors were, maybe it will help me find mine!
