I'm trying to find an obit for my g-grandmother, Sarah Emma Fisher Newton Mattox, born in 1858. She was married to William James Newton in 1879, then married James Core Mattox in 1905 and widowed in 1925. He died in Belle Plaine, Iowa. She was still alive in 1940 (per Federal census), living in Benton County, Iowa. I believe she died in the period 1940 to 1945, but I can't find her. She has a son, Willis E. Newton, buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Belle Plaine. Thank you.

Is great to at least find those two. Do you know where I might find an obit from January 1965? It was not listed online as being in the Register or Tribune where I found the others. The other one I am looking for is for Iner Carl Joelson.
Also would I have to go to the library to find the ones from the Tribune?
Thanks again for any info!

Laurel Hill Cemetery is at 3601 East Court Avenue, just south and east of the Iowa State Fairgrounds. You may wish to contact the cemetery to obtain additional information.
Hopefully, someone in or near Polk County who can visit the library in the State Historical Building in Des Moines, will volunteer to assist you. The library there has many microfilms of Iowa city & town newspapers including the Des Moines Tribune. I live 2 hours from Des Moines and have access to the Des Moines Register films through the local university. I haven't been able to convince them to add the Tribune films!

My Birth Father was incarcerated under an assumed name, and no one knows that name. His real name is Wesley Long, born 2/24/1936, and he had trouble with the law in a few states besides IA. He was arrested and jailed about 1965 on a drug bust. He contracted cancer and died and was buried at ISP. How do I find a list of those buried there so we can start to find what name he's buried under and put closure to this sad situation. I'm working with ISP, but is there an online list?
Thanks so much in advance, Alisa ambgal@aol.com
Waterloo Daily Courier
September 29, 2936

Surgeon at S.U.I. Hospital, Farmer Collision Victims
Alva Hutson of State Center and Dr. Howard L. Beye Die in Crash

Marshalltown Ia. - Alva Hutson, 60, prominent farmer of State Center, was instantly killed and Dr. Howard L. Beye, head surgeon at the State University Hospital at Iowa City, died an hour and half later after a headon collision at the junction of highways 88 and 30 at 11 o'clock Tuesday.
The junction is five miles west of Marshalltown.
Dr. J.A. Edwards, the superintendent of Oakdale Sanitarium and Dr. William Spear of the Oakdale staff, riding in the same car with Beye, were seriously injured.
Reconstructs Tragedy
There were no eye witnesses and the injured have been unable to tell what happened, but Coroner R. R. Haupert said that the position of the two cars indicated that the doctors, traveling west on the Lincoln Highway, attempted to swing left to take highway 88, the diagonal road to Des Moines, and collided with Hutson's car.
Car Coming Over Rise
The later car was coming over a slight rise at the junction of the two highways.
Hutson was riding alone.
Hutson, a promient mule breeder and for years had been a heavy prize winner at the Iowa State Fair.
The medical party was on its way to a meeting in Sioux City when the accident occured.

The Oelwein Daily Register
March 13, 1939

Open Trial in Fatal Accident

Iowa City, Ia. March 13 - Trial of a $16,000 damage suit resulting from a fatal automoblie accident near Marshalltown in September 1936, was scheduled to open in Johnson County Court District Court today.
The three persons killed in the crash were Alva Hutson, J.H. Edwards and Howard L. Beye, passenger in the Edwards machine. Beye was killed instantly, Hutson died soon after the accident and Edwards died six days later.
Suit was filed by B.H. Gray, administrator of the Hutson estate. The petition asserted that Edwards was driving at such a rate of speed that he could not control his automoblie and crashed into the automoblie driven by Hutson. The accident occurred about five miles southwest of Marshalltown at the intersection of primary roads 30 and 88.

*The first article states that Alva Hutson was killed instantly and Beyes died an hour and a half later. The second article says that Beyes died instantly and Alva died soon afterwards. I went back and reread each article and that is what is said.

Waterloo Daily Courier
September 30, 1936

Delay Inquest In Crash That Took Life of Dr. Beye

Doctors Edwards and Spear Injuried in Collision Show Improvement

Marshalltown Ia. - Dr. J. A. Edwards, superintendent of the Oakdale Sanitarium and Dr. William Spear of the Oakdale staff, survivors of the automoblie collision which took two lives on the Lincoln Highway five west of here on Tuesday, were showing improvement Wednesday at St. Thomas Mercy Hospital here and attending physicans said their chances of recovery are good.
Each man sustained compound factures of both legs, cuts and bruises and were suffering from shock.
Inquest Held Up
Alva Hutson, State Center farmer, died in the crash and Dr. Howard L. Beye chief of the surgery department at the University Hospital in Iowa City died an hour and a half later.
The three doctors were on their way to a medical meeting in Sioux City.
Coroner R. R. Haupert late Tuesday impaneled a jury but the inquest will not be held until the survivors are able to testify.
Dr. Beyes body was removed to Iowa City late Monday and the body of Hutson was taken directly to State Center where funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Another short article from the Ames Daily Tribune-Times on October 1, 1930 simply says that Alva was the fater of Mrs. Dick VanPelt of 904 Clark Avenue and that the funeral was held at 2:oo p.m. at State Center.

Another article in the Wisconsin State Jounal on October 6, 1936 tells of Dr. J. A. Edwards dying from his injuries.

Those were the only articles I could find in regards to Alva Hutson at www.newspaperarchives.com

Hope they help
They sold their land because I have a copy of the deed. But John Beard dies after that and not sure if he is buried in Missouri (poss. Camden twp, DeKalb Mo) or in Henry Co?

Do you already have Elliott's Civil War Pension File? It may make reference to any arrests or convictions.
