Former Cage Star Killed
Wilkesville Youth Dies In Route 160 Crash
Wellston, July 9- Glenn Wendell Unroe, 18, former Wilkesville High School basketball star, lost his life in an auto accident on Route 160 between Evergreen and Ewing. The Unroe youth was a passenger in a car driven by Ralph White, 19, of Wilkesville. The two had been to Gallipolis and were returning home about 11:45 p.m. Thursday when White said must have fallen asleep at the wheel. The car ran off the left side of the road and traveled 180 feet in a ditch before it struck a tree. The right-hand side of the car, where the Unroe youth was riding, hit the tree first. The White youth was removed to Holzer Hospital. He has severe face, head and back lacerations and a hip injury. The Unoe lad died at the scene of the crash. Gallia Coroner Dr. D. R. Wearheim returned a verdict of accidental death. Dr. Wearheim said the victim suffered a fractured skull and broken neck. The car, which wrapped itself around the tree, was demolished. The Unroe youth was a son of Clifton and Glenna Robert Unoe of Ewing Rt. 1. He was gradated from Wilkesville High in the Class of 1949. While in high school he starred on the school cage team. Last season he was named to the All-Vinton County team. Monday would have been his 19th birthday anniversary. Surviving besides the parents are two brothers, Robert of Gallipolis and James Philip at home, and a sister, Mrs. Rarnetta Kersey of Dayton. Rev. Earl Cremeens will officiate at the last rites at Ewing Methodist Church. Burial, directed by McCoy Funeral Home will be in Vinton. The body is at the residence and will remain there until the funeral hour, 2 p.m. Sunday.
