Death of Harry Schwartzberg

We know that Harry Schwartzberg was buried in Memphis (February 8, 1912). Family lore was that he was murdered however we can't find a death certificate. I don't know if he died in Tennessee or if this happened elsewhere. Can anyone help me to try to track down either an obituary or any information on his death? His wife Fannie, remarried Louis Feldman by the 1930 census and remained in Memphis for the rest of their lives.

Nashville Christian Advocate: Seeking 1867 Issue

I have recently come across an August, 1867 letter in which
a Tennessee Methodist minister promises (in return for a kind gift of 4 live chickens!)to have an obituary of John W. Nichol (died Fulton Co., KY, September 1866) published in The (Nashville) Christian Advocate, a weekly paper covering Methodist matters regionally. John W. Nichol, elder brother of my gg-grandfather, was the only family member born in NC; I have tried for 40 years to locate the NC homestead, and to identify who John's mother was.

In his excellent "Abstracts from Methodist Publications", which is available online, Jonathan K. T. Smith is missing extracts of The Christian Advocate from 1862 through 1868; the TN State Library and Archives are missing the same issues.

Does anyone out there know where I might be able to find issues of this paper published in the latter part of 1867?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Bob Nichol

The Stewart-Houston Times Now Online!!

Hello Message Board,

Today is a great day in the Stewart-Houston County areas!! As of today you can now read "The Stewart-Houston Times" newspaper online. I am not sure if all the newspaper is represented, but the obituaries are there for sure! I picked up my hard copy of the newspaper today and haven't had a chance to check it against the online version to see if it is all there, of course our little newspaper is not that big, but we love it!!

"The Clarksville-Leaf Chronicle" owns "The Stewart-Houston Times" and even though the Leaf Chronicle has been online for years, the Stewart-Houston Times has not. Well, just today I found that they have added "The Stewart-Houston Times" newspaper to their site. I am excited!!

While a lot of Stewart and Houston Countians have their obituaries published in the Clarksville paper, there are many that don't and just have it published in "The Stewart-Houston Times". So, I am so glad to see that the Leaf Chronicle has finally added our little newspaper to their site.

Here is the link to "The Stewart-Houston Times" page, I hope everyone Enjoys!!!

http://www.theleafchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Catego...

Melissa Barker
Genealogist for Tennessee and Kentucky
E-Mail: kaitysmom@peoplestel.net

Memphis, TN 1960 era newspapers

I would like a list of all of the newspapers that were published in Memphis, Tennessee in the early to mid 1960's. Late 1950's would be okay too. I am looking for newspaper articles on my great aunts that lived there from the 1930's until their deaths in the late 1960's or early 1970's.
Names are Fisher and Clark. Maiden name was Shurron

3 items from 1800's about Carroll County

Nashville Banner & Nashville Whig
Nashville, Tennessee
March 21, 1836
Mortuary Notice
On the 18th February, at the residence of Col. HUGH HILL in Carroll County, Ten., of influenza, Mr. WILLIAM DEMOSS in the 68th year of his age.

Memphis Avalanche
Memphis, Tennessee
February 28, 1869

A Frightful Tragedy in Carroll County—The Skull Boners and Their Enemies
From the Nashville Danner on the 26th.
About two months ago, Sheriff NEELY of Carroll County, arrested in “Scull Bone,” (a section of country on the line between Carroll and Gibson Counties, and so called from the desperate character of its inhabitants), two men named BALLEW and ANDREWS, who cruelly beat an old man, knocked down his wife and burned their barn. The prisoners were lodged in jail at Huntingdon. There being fears that a posse from “Skull Bone” would attempt to release them, deputy sheriff T. N. PATTERSON placed a guard of seven men at the jail to defend it. His fears proved to be well grounded, and on the same night, a party of about 40 men, under one FLIPPIN, went to town, demanded the jail keys and released their two friends, the guards surrendering without firing a gun.

Sheriff NEELY was once a Federal Captain and raised a company in Carroll County. Toward the close of the “late unpleasantness,” GEORGE FLIPPIN deserted the Confederate cause and became a rampant Radical. The war closed, and a number of men of his stripe, and living on the line between Carroll and Gibson, by their deeds of lawlessness, gave the portion of the county of “Skull Bone.” These are the men the West Tennessean (a mean spirited Radical paper) calls Ku-Flux.

Last Monday three men from Skull Bone, viz, GEORGE FLIPPIN, JOHN FLIPPIN and CAL URY, went to Mr. F. H. HENDERSON’S house, about six miles form Huntingdon, and demanded of him a mule which they said had been taken from them during the war. Mr. Henderson refused to give up the mule, as he had a certificate that he had purchased it of the Government. He was informed he would have to surrender the animal or “go under.” When Mr. Henderson demanded their authority, CAL URY drew a six-shooter and remarked, “This is it!” Such an argument was not to be resisted, at such odds, and Mr. H. permitted the ruffians to lead the mule off. He then went toward his house, but before reaching it, met J. COVINGTON, THOMAS BASS and H. N. SWAIN, to whom he related the circumstances. They armed themselves with shotguns and started in pursuit. Soon thereafter they met JAMES THOMPSON and JOHN KING. These two gentlemen joined the pursuing party, and they all rode on, overtaking the horsethieves about four miles from Mr. Henderson’s. Mr. Bass demanded the surrender of the parties, saying to Ury, “None of you shall be hurt if you surrender.” Ury’s response was a second production of his “legal authority” and a shot at Mr. Bass. Ury and the Flippins then jumped from their horses and took shelter behind a fence. They fired eight or nine shots before their pursuers returned the fire. The engagement becoming rather warm, like men who hat smelt powder before, the latter dismounted and charged the thieves, killing GEORGE FLIPPIN and wounding the other two at first volley. The fight over, the victors carried the remains of the dead man and the wounded men to a house close by and had them carried for.

Mr. Henderson and all his party gave themselves up to the authorities at Huntingdon and had their trial before Justices BUVARD and ALLEN, who acquitted the entire party.

To sum up, the “legal authority” gang lost one man killed, the rest badly wounded, some pistols and their stolen mule. Such a reverse is likely to curb the proud spirit of the Skull Boners for some time to come.

National Banner and Nashville Whig
Tennessee
July 22 1836

Black List (unpaid debts to be collected)
Dr. WILLIAM WILKINSON of Gainsville, Alabama, due $10.50
BRITTAIN BARKER from Carroll County, Tenn., due $13, gone to Chickasaw Nation
WILLIAM FOWLER of Linden, Alabama, due $41, gone to Livingston, Alabama.
J. N. BURROUGHS, M. D., of Troy, Ten., due $5.33, “left without bidding us goodbye.”
J. W. SCOTT of Williamsville, Dickson County, removed, it is supposed to Fayette County, due $12.83.
Please remit without further delay.
M. ACHISON, Surgeon Dentist.
Call and pay your note.
W. H. HUNT & Co.
13 Oct 1866 disaster/tragedy Memphis, TN

Four children of my ancestors died on 13 Oct 1866 according to Elmwood Cemetery records, where they are all buried in Memphis, Shelby Co, TN.

What happened on 13 Oct 1866? Does anyone know of a fire or train wreck or anything that would cause four children between the ages of 2 and 12 to all perish on the same day, from the same family?

The children who died were children of William Benjamin McNabb and Mariah Isham Jones. Their names were:
William Benjamin McNabb, Jr.
b. 1854
Lebbens McNabb
b. 1855
Maria Louise McNabb
b. 1862
James McNabb
b. 1864

All four of these children died on 13 Oct 1866.

If anyone knows of anything that happened on this date, please respond to my querie. I cannot search any newspaper archives in Memphis as I am in another state. Maybe there was a fire at the McNabb house or a train wreck in Tennessee somewhere on this date or something like that. I have no clue. Any small clue would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks!

A murder in 1868

I am looking for a newspaper article or something that dates back to 1868. This murder took place in Fentress County, TN if I am correct and it was the murder of Lucinda Galloway (53 years), her daughter Catharine Galloway (25 years) and a grandchild. I was given information that the murderer was caught and hung for his crime but I don't know how he killed them, or any other information.

If someone knows how to find a newspaper article from this time, please let me know.

Thanks!

Re: Newspapers in Memphis area: queries?

The only daily newspaper in Memphis is "The Commercial Appeal" which has never had a genealogical section in its classified ad; despite requests by several people over the years. You could put a query in as a Personal Ad, but I doubt it would get the results you want. There is a weekly newspaper called "The Memphis Flyer" which is distribitued free and has a wife readership but it too has no genealogy section; although the personal ad section of The Flyer probably gets more attention than the ads in the Commercial Appeal. I wish I could be more helpful, but I doubt either of these newspapers would be worth spending money on in order to locate descendants. If you have names for these people, you might try switchboard.com on the Internet; I had some luck there last year locating relatives in another state.

One possible idea; (its a long shot) write to the "Memphis Magazine" published by Towery Press Inc, and maybe address it to Vance Lauderdale, who writes a column about local history. He has not run queries in the past, but perhaps he might mention something about your situation in his colum. . Also, although Memphis Magazine does not have a genealogy section, it is very well read and tends to be re-read more than newsapapers (DR.'s offices, etc) and a query (ad) in it would stand a better chance of being seen by the people you want to reach, or someone that knows them.
