R. ORVILLE BRYANT

Ralph Orville Bryant, 86, of Council Grove KS passed away Monday, June 4, 2007, at Mercy Regional Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas. He was born on April 28, 1921, in rural Ellinwood, Kansas, the son of Ralph Lester and Ida Dora Panning Bryant.

He graduated from Ellinwood High School in 1939. In November 1942, Orville joined the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He served in Headquarters Company of the 11th Armored Division. Part of the European Theatre, he was in the Battle of the Bulge and helped liberate Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Orville received numerous medals, including 3 Bronze Stars, before being honorably discharged in January 1946.

On February 5, 1946, Orville married Bernice Catherine Hammeke at Ellinwood. They made their home in Pawnee County, Kansas, living on a farm near Rozel. The couple farmed for the next 38 years and was able to spend several retirement winters in Mesa, Arizona and summers in Gunnison, Colorado. Orville served on several civic boards while a resident of Pawnee County. The couple moved to Council Grove in 1990.

Orville was a lifetime member of both the V.F.W. and the American Legion, receiving his 60-year membership pin from the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Darrel Bryant and wife, Rhonda, of Council Grove; a daughter, Janet (Jan) Hall and husband, Lyle, of Chanute; a foster-son,
Robert Selby and wife, Sue, of Nassau Bay, Texas; a brother, Glen Bryant and wife, Jolene, of Larned; and a sister, Evelyn Miller and husband, Carl, of Ellinwood. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren: Andrea & Judson Gladin, Manhattan; Jackie & Adam Lang, Gardner; Kayla Bryant, Manhattan; Kevin Bryant, Manhattan, John & Kierstin Bittel, Topeka; Matt & Joann Bittel, Kansas City, MO; Cala & Vince Stadel, Burlington; Jana & John Saul, Fairfax Station, VA; Paula & Howard Saunders, Overland Park; and Paul & Katie Selby, Portland, Oregon. The couple was also blessed with 17 great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, Melvin, Vernon and Donald, and an infant sister preceded him in death.

Services will be held at 2:00, Thursday, June 7, 2007 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Council Grove, with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening, June 6, from 7:00-8:30 at Penwell-Gabel Council Grove Chapel.

Memorials can be made to the Morris County Hospital Foundation or to the Calvary Lutheran Church Building Fund in care of Penwell-Gabel Council Grove Chapel.
