Private services for Richard Laverne Earl of Grass Valley were conducted Thursday at the Chapel of the Angels Mortuary in Grass Valley. Burial took place at the Rough and Ready Cemetery.

Mr. Earl died Friday, July 4, in Grass Valley. He was 78.

He was born Nov. 22, 1924, in Jasper, Mo., to Lester and Elizabeth Earl. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 in the 82nd 517 Airborne Division. He received an associate degree in engineering from the College of San Mateo in 1965. He married Margaret on June 26, 1948, in Carson City, Nev. He retired from Pacific Bell after 35 years of service. He was a member of the World War II Airborne Troopers, The Strum Bums Ukulele Band, ARES, Telephone Pioneers and the Gold Country Fly Wheelers. He enjoyed ham radio, hiking and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Earl of Grass Valley; daughter, Pamela Forman of Carmel Valley; son, Steven Earl of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Bette-Belle Chohanin of Las Vegas; and two grandchildren, Julia Earl and Richard Earl.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Angels Mortuary.
