Chincoteague pony man. His claim to fame came when author Marguerite Henry came to his island in order to write about the wild ponies. The story of his grandchildren's purchase of a wild mare and her foal during the previous pony penning day would become the basis for Miss Henry's tale. Beebe agreed to sell the young horse, Misty, to Henry for $150 provided her book included his grandchildren Paul and Mareen. 'Misty of Chincoteague' became and still stands as a classic of childrens' literature. Beebe died two months after his grandson Paul was killed in an automobile accident.
