Before the Antietam Campaign:
By 1860 he owned and operated a hotel and a stage line in Staunton, Virginia. He entered service and was appointed Major and Quartermaster at Staunton in April 1861, and served there until January 1862. He was elected Captain, Company H of the 34th Virginia Infantry, then Lieutenant Colonel of the 52nd in August 1861. In January he resigned his QM post and served with the Regiment. He briefly acted as Gen Jackson's Chief QM in February 1862, and was elected Colonel of the 52nd on 1 May. He was wounded in the arm in action at McDowell 8 May 1862, but rejoined the Regiment soon after.
The remainder of the War:
He was absent sick from October 1862 into March 1863, returned to the Regiment in April and May, then resigned because of disability in June. He served as QM at Staunton for the rest of the War.
