NORTH LIMA, OH – Catherine Franzetta Teusink, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, Oct. 16, 2012, at The Assumption Village in North Lima, Ohio.
Catherine was born Oct. 7, 1919, in East Liverpool, Ohio (Columbiana County) the daughter of Charles and Josephine D’Allesandro Franzetta.
She graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1937, attending Ohio State University during her career as office supervisor with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in East Liverpool. Mrs. Teusink retired from that position after serving 31 years.
Following her retirement, she became the first executive director of the Community Action Committee Agency of Columbiana County, making her the first woman in the state of Ohio to hold such a position. From there she moved to Dayton as the first Social Service Coordinator-Director with the Dayton Metropolitan Housing Authority.
In 1970, Mrs. Teusink became Administrative Assistant to the Director of Administration at the Defense Systems Management College in Ft. Belvoir, Va. Three years later, she worked on a part-time basis with the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority, the American Medical Association of Colleges and several other associations that dealt with Capitol Hill lobbying groups. She then began her own secretarial business and worked in that capacity until she became Administrative Assistant to the president and general manager of The Glass Packaging Institute.
Following her marriage to Philip J. Teusink, a retired Lt. Colonel with the U.S. Air Force on Aug. 11, 1979, she moved to Springfield and was employed in the Customer Services Dept. at The Huntington Bank, leaving there to work with her husband in real estate. During that time she acted as a volunteer at Mercy Hospital.
In 1984, she returned to Virginia and was employed as Administrative Assistant to Dr. Bernard Zeavin of The Eye Center. Mrs. Teusink also volunteered for the American Red Cross and worked eight months as a volunteer in the East Wing of the White House on the Correspondence Staff for Rosalyn Carter while in Washington, D.C.
She was a member of St. Aloysius Community Parish, New Century Club and was a Holtz-Mackay Partner in the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association.
She was also a Life Member of the Metropolitan Life Veterans Association.
Mrs. Teusink was a former member of the Business & Professional Women’s Club, the Catholic Daughters of America and the American Red Cross, serving as a “Gray Lady” at East Liverpool City Hospital for 10 years.
Her husband, Philip J. Teusink, passed away Aug. 31, 2000.
Catherine will be lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law, Helen Franzetta of Midland, Pa. and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Rose Caclopoli and Nellie Domski; and brothers Joseph M. Franzetta and Bishop Benedict C. Franzetta.
A funeral service took place on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at the Columbiana County Memorial Park Chapel.
A Mass remembering Catherine will take place at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at the Marian Living Center at The Assumption Village, 9800 Market St. in North Lima, Ohio.
