Hector Carreras, Jr.

Funeral service for Hector Carreras, Jr., 55, Lawton, will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday at the St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Bill Schneider, Pastor, Rev. Richard Mayer, Pastor Emeritus, and Rev. Mark Mozeik, Associate Pastor officiating.
Mr. Carreras died Wednesday, January 18 in Houston, Texas.
Burial with full military honors will be 9:00 a.m. Monday in the Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
Mr. Carreras was born September 13, 1956 in New York, New York, to Hector and Arminda (Collazo) Carreras. He married Noemi Arroyo on February 11, 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
He was retired from the U.S. Army on June 30, 1995 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He took great pride in his military service and his awards include the Soldier’s Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3rd Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal 6th Award, National Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon with number 3, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with number 3, expert Marksmanship Badge Rifle, M-16 and the German Marksmanship Badge. He was most proud of the Soldier’s Medal, which he received for a rescue involving a fire in Germany.
His desire to help people prompted his subsequent employment with Social Services at Fort Sill where he worked in the outreach area and his tenure with the Armed Forces Red Cross where from 1999 – 2008 he served as a senior case worker. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and was a church elder.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; two children, Christopher Michael Carreras, Fort Meade, Maryland, and Cathy Carreras-Wells and her husband Chin, McKinney, Texas; two grandchildren, Clayton and Christian Wells; his parents, Hector and Arminda Carreras, San Juan, Puerto Rico; a sister, Ibira Cartagena and her husband William, Pembroke Pines, Florida; two brothers, Antonio Carreras and his wife Laura, Coconut Creek, Florida, and Carlos Carreras and his wife Mari, San Juan, Puerto Rico.
