BEAVERCREEK — Russell E. Van Oss, age 97, of Beavercreek, Ohio passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Hospice of Dayton.
He was born in Dayton, OHIO on December 11, 1916, the son of Alfred T. and Lucille Elizabeth (Brassington) Van Oss, who preceded him in death.
Russell was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 72 years, Dorothy Rose (Zimmer) Van Oss, on May 23, 2013, his son-in-law, Butch Orr, his sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ray Brewer, two brothers, Jerome and Eugene Van Oss, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Russell Catanzaro, Marianna Van Oss and Agnes Zimmer.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Thomas and Ardyce Van Oss, of Beavercreek, Joanne Orr, of Beavercreek, David and Carol Van Oss, of Austin, TX, Joseph and Peggy Van Oss, of Bellbrook, Stephen and Jodi Van Oss, of Pittsburgh, PA; two brothers, Donald Van Oss, of Donnellsville, Ohio, Richard and Johanna Van Oss, of Beavercreek; brothers-in-law, J. Robert Zimmer, of Kettering, Ohio, James and Joyce Zimmer, of FL, Jack and Peggy Zimmer, of MO; grandchildren, T.R. Van Oss, Amy (Sam) Learned, Sara (Phillip) Barber, Jessica Van Oss, Shelby Van Oss, Kelsey Van Oss, Skyler Van Oss, Branden Van Oss, Ryan Van Oss, Trenton Van Oss and Taylor Van Oss; four great grandchildren, Ryan Simon, Abby and Liam Learned, Clare Barber. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Russell was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen, a member and Financial Secretary of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen Union Local #22.
He was a charter member of St. Luke Catholic Church, where he was a founding member of and the 1st President of the St. Luke Leisure Club.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WW II.
Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. from St. Luke Catholic Church, 1440 N. Fairfield Road. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 2014. If desired, contributions may be made in memory of Russell to The Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, OH 45420.
