Hello Sharon, I am Tina's sister and have been digging to see what else could be found on our ggggrandfather William Carr, he was from the Northern part of Arkansas in Benton County. Do you know who Zachariahs father and mother was I might be able to track them to this William Carr who died in a Sawmill accident. He was married to Ella Duncan Walker Carr at the time of his death, however he was married to Martha Mahala Etris before then. They had several children together, while married to Ella he went by the name of Brent. Please let me know if you have the names of your ggrandfather's parents I will do some digging to see if they fit into our Carrs

Thanks
Patti

Mill explosion Craighead Co. Ar.

I will relate what I can remember of a story my dad told me as a child. He told of a mill located somewhere along the St. Francis River in Craighead Co. exploding and killing the fireman, I don't believe he was a witness, of course he lived in the nearby community of Black Oak or Caraway and it was big news of the time. He said the fire man did not keep a close eye on the water level in the boiler and let it get low and of course then the temp. and pressure rose to dangerous levels and he panicked and instead of pulling the fire he turned in cold water to the boiler and caused the explosion it killed him instantly and according to my father it blew his body apart and left body parts hanging in the timber around the mill. I don't recall the name of the mill or the owner or who the fellow was that got killed.

I also searched for info. on sawmills in Montgomery Co., Ark, as an ancestor died in a sawmill accident. I would suggest seeing what sites Cyndi's List has for the topic, as there is a site specifically dealing with sawmills in Arkansas. Sorry I can't provide the address here.

Also, I found the information I was looking for in a compilation of newspaper clippings produced by the county historical society. As a fundraiser for the historical society, the members diligently transcribed the newspapers in their archives. It was worth the price because I found more than three references to the family I was researching, as well as detailed information on the death of the young ancestor. Good luck.

Where is Coy, Arkansas. You might be able to look in the local newspapers. You can get access to their microfilms that would be great. I know that Harrisburg's Modern News is on microfilm through their library. It might at least help you find out what name was most common if you can find the article on his death. Also, check some of the mortuary's they might give you a copy of his death notice if they still have it in their file.

That is a super link. I did not find my needed information. My grandfather died in a sawmill accident in Coy,Arkansas between 1911-1920. Maybe closer to 1915. He was George Willis James Hale so there are so many brick walls with that many names and nick names added to that. Do you have any suggestions for me or do you have new sawmill information since the post in 2005?

This is probably not what you wanted, but maybe it can help you somehow. I figured it couldn't hurt.
I googled Arkansas John Pate sawmill, and came up with this military information.

Pate, George

France (Country), 26, m, 5-11, Farmer

Mustered in 3-5-62. Wounded at New Hope Church--gunshot left hand, lost thumb. No 19 United States Army General Hospital Nashville Tennessee. Hospital Louisville Kentucky. Floating United States Army Hospital "OHIO." United States Army General Hospital No 5 & No 8 New Albany Indiana. Transferred to 70th Indiana Infantry. Mustered out Goldsboro North Carolina 4-6-65. Died 2-28-1903

Occupations:

Manual Labor = 95
White Collar = 1
Artisan = 14

Farmer = 95
Clerk = 1
Brick Mason= 2

Laborer = 6

Brick Molder = 1

Sawyer = 3*
Transportation = 0
Shoemaker = 1

Sawmill Operator = 1

The address to the information is;
http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Barracks/3627/companyg.htm...

There is also a person who has a photo of 671. John Pate and Wife, Letona?, White County, Arkansas. Here is that address;
http://archives.uca.edu/photograph_collection/p29.html

If it's not your John Pate, maybe it's a relative? I would see if the man that has this photo knows anything about it.

There is also something about a John Pate in Arkansas that has something about a sawmill in the article, but I can't seem to get the thing to open up (my computer is having serious issues today). From what I can tell, the sawmill is called Pate Sawmill.
That address is;
http://www.fpl.fs/fed.us/documnts/fplrp/fplrp594.pdf

Good luck!

bj

Hi Barb- I live in California, I have no idea how to access a local paper for the Athens, Arkansas area. Have tried online, but no luck. Finding Leven Benton Miller's resting place and accident information has proved as elusive as finding information on the resting place of Thomas & Louina Reavis, or finding the family of James Jackson Reavis's wife, Mary Elizabeth Williams. (Yes, I am taking advantage of the opportunity to plug for them !). If any one has ANY information on these people, would absolutely SQUEAL with excitement to have it !! (Barb- did I word that in such a way that EVERYONE who reads it will know how important it would be to have that information ? ! ? ! ). Leven Benton Miller was the son-in-law of Thomas and Louina Reavis. His wife was Martha Jane "Revis/Reavis" Miller. Mary Elizabeth Williams, wife of J J Reavis, is the mother of Thomas Reavis, & Grandmother of Martha Jane" Revis/Reavis" Miller. Have been trying to find if Mary Elizabeth Williams was Indian, and if she is or is not, WANT to find who her parents/ family was.
If any one knows the answers to any of these querys- would VERY much appreciate knowing the answers-Please Share !! PLEASE.

I'm trying to find information about a sawmill explosion in Little River County around 1890, in which my gg-grandfather, Albert H Miller, died.

His wife, Lydia Viola Sanders Miller, remarried soon after to Pete Gorman, and after he died, to John W McFarlen.

Any help would be appreciated - I would really love to know more about Albert.

SAWMILL EXPLOSION

My gr-gr-grandfather was also killed in a boiler explosion. His name was Elijah William Pullen. There are several different news articles about it.

The Arkansas Gazette, dated, Saturday, April 30, 1892

FOUR KILLED and Fourteen Wounded, Two of Whom Will Die.

This is a result of the boiler explosion in Pullen & Haywood's Mill in Little River County, Rocky Comfort, Arkansas, April 27, 1892.

The bursting of the boiler in Pullen & Haywood's Mill yesterday, resulted in the death of E.W. Pullen, W.W. Haywood, W.A. Clem and Frank Castleberry, a child about 8 years old and wounding the following: Mrs. Castleberry, seriously and will die; J.W. Kitmer, seriously, and will die; Miss Dora Castleberry, Miss Ona Pope, Edmond Pope, aged 9 years; Warren Stewart, aged 12 years; R.A. Clem, aged 49 years; Robert Pullen, son of E.W. Pullen; Maude and Allen, aged respectfully 6 and 10, children of W.W. Haywood; Headly Short and wife 70 years old; Dickson Knight, Choctaw Indian, aged 35; and Allen Thompson, aged 16.

Mr. J.W. Kitmer has a father and sisters in St. Louis.

The boiler bursted on top of the fire box, causing it to rebound endwise, striking the floor near the saw, then turning endwise again, striking the ground about twenty-five yards from the place it was located. This is the third boiler explosion that has occurred in this part of the county in the last year or so. From all accounts, the boiler was a second-hand one, and was very recently brought into this county. But little lumber had been sawed. Mr. E.W. Pullen was from Clark County and has relatives here. Mr. V.S. Clem is also from Clark County.

Mr. E.W. Pullen was buried today.

-------------------------------------------

ANOTHER ACCOUNT:

Richmond, Arkansas, April 28 - Never in the history of Little River County have our people been so shocked as they have by the recent disaster, which occurred on the 26th inst. about 2 P.M. by which three persons were instantly killed and fourteen wounded. In company with several craftsmen, your correspondent visited Rocky Comfort yesterday to assist in burying Mr. E.W. Pullen, a good citizen and a Mason of High standing, whose untimely death was mentioned in yesterday's special. Reaching Rocky Comfort too late to participate in the funeral ceremonies, we sought information concerning the sad tragedy, which furnished the only topic of conversation in that quiet town on our Western border.

The saw mill, owned by Messrs. Pullen and Haywood, has been recently built, or rather, removed to its present locality, and is situated six miles northeast of Rocky Comfort, on the "line" of Government road, marking the boundary line between Arkansas and the Indian Territory.

The engines had been but recently repaired, a new saw purchased, and everything seemed to be in nice shape, and its enterprising owners were congratulating themselves upon the bright prospects for a "good run" in that growing section.

A number of ladies and children had repaired to the scene to witness the new mill start, little dreaming of the terrible fate that awaited them. About 2 o'clock P.M., only a little while after the whistle had blown and the merry hum of the saw was making the woods ring with loud noise, a fearful crash came. The boiler had exploded, caused presumably by the water getting too low in the boiler and the "crown sheet" becoming heated, and upon turning in a fresh supply of water, the explosion came. The killed were Mr. E.W. Pullen, Mr. Haywood and young Castleberry, the fireman.

Mrs. Castleberry's arm was broken, and her legs badly bruised, and skull fractured, and she has since died.

Young Clem, son of Mr. Allen Clem, was badly wounded and died on yesterday.

Four others, probably two ladies and two men, sustained serious injuries from which it is feared they will not recover.

Of the eight others hurt, they will soon recover, as their injuries were bruises or burns from hot water.

Doctors Savage and Sager, the excellent physicians of Rocky Comfort, were doing some heroic work in caring for the wounded and alleviating their suffering.

----------------------------------------------

BOILER EXPLOSION

Three Men Killed, Four Wounded, and Two Women Injured.

Richmond, Arkansas, April 27 - The distressing news has just reached this place of the most terrible explosion that has ever occurred in this county. Mr. E.W. Pullen, who has a steam mill six miles west of Rocky Comfort, in this county, had just returned from the foundry at Texarkana with some parts of the machinery, which had been repaired. The parts had been put together and the mill started on Tuesday, April 26, in the presence of a number of by-standers, when the boiler exploded, killing Mr. E.W. Pullen, his engineer and fireman, and wounding four others, perhaps mortally.

Of the wounded, one was a woman who had both arms and limbs broken and in this mangled condition, she is still living.

Mr. E.W. Pullen was one of our best citizens, being Worshipful Master of Rocky Comfort Lodge, R. and A.M.; Royal Arch Captain of Richmond Chapter No. 87, Royal Arch Masons, and a zealous Knight of Honor.

The undertaker of this place will send coffins this morning to the scene of the disaster.

Peter, William was the son of John Bogan. William had several brothers and sisters but I don't know all of them. John Bogan came from South Carolina from a family who first settled in Pennsylvania, then moved to South Carolina.

William named his only son, John Washington Bogan. Some say William's father was named John Robert Bogan. I have not been able to find out about the "Robert" though, I have only found John L. Bogan on census records and just plain John.

John married in SC or NC and moved to Alabama by 1850 then to Arkansas later by 1862 where he raised his family and where William settled also.

The known brothers of William are George, Samuel and John (Jr. I guess) with sisters Anganetta (Nettie), Martha, Nancy and others whose names we don't know.

Where is the Plymouth you are talking about? Do you mean the east coast Plymouth?

Please write back soon. I'd love to find someone researching the same family lines. Carole

Weyerheauser actually bought Dierks out around 1969 or 1970. I was a telephone man for SW Bell & did a lot of phone work in the old Dierks sawmill in Mt. Pine, Ar. & also for Weyereauser after they bought Dierks out. Weyerheauser shut the Mt. Pine Mill down last year, but they still operate a mill at Dierks Arkansas. There are several members of the old Dierks family still living in & around Hot Springs, Arkansas where they are listed in the Hot Springs directory. There were many old "groundhog" sawmills around in 1913 as well as those operated by Dierks, Rosboro, Clark, & several other large lumber companies at that time. There is a book "Sawmill" which you should be able to find on line somewhere that has a lot of info about the sawmill industry in this area in the early 1900s. Very intersting reading & might give you a direction to go.

Jeffery,Alfred,(my grandfather) William jr, Eugene, Waldo Montgomery.Any help or encouragement would be appreciated. I never knew there were so many sawmills around AR. I did find him in Clay county doing work in 1900 with his crew. That was a great help, sometimes you wonder about the old people in the family that give you the information and it is a good feeling when you can validate their statements
